My first proper week of spinning for this year's Tour de Fleece. Includes why I don't trust fresh skeins, tips for spinning from the fold if you have arthritis/joint pain, the Ravelston sweater by Ysolda Teague and plenty of cat interference! I'd love to know how your projects have been coming along! **I love helping people learn about fibre arts... I also have to pay the bills! A lot of work goes into these videos so if you found it helpful, please consider supporting the channel by buying me a ‘virtual coffee’ via my Ko-Fi account : www.ko-fi.com/tinyfibrestudio or joining my Patreon: www.patreon.com/tinyfibrestudio Thank you!** Links: Tour de France Information (includes the calendar): www.tinyfibrestudio.com/blog/tour-de-fleece-introduction John Arbon Textiles: www.jarbon.com Ravelston Sweater by Ysolda Teague ysolda.com/products/ravelston 00:00 Intro 00:39 'Nasturtium' singles 2:08 'Nasturtium' plying and why I don't trust fresh skeins 4:29 'Beehive' yarn and spinning from the fold with joint pain 8:28 Knitting progress

Thank you for the helpful remarks on "reading" skeins before finishing. Your suggestions for processing and explanation of the ways wool may react to finishing make excellent sense.

I have noticed the same with my yarn right off the bobbin. I wasn't ever worried about it. Good to see you!!! God bless!

Thank you. I try! 😊 But also thanks to the person who asked the original question and got me thinking about a solution!

As someone who has arthritis in my hands and spins from the fold (ish), my method is to fold the fiber and then just hold it as a cloud in my fiber hand. I find the natural "arthritis claw" handshape works well for this. I do spin long draw most of the time however, so as with everything else with spinning ymmv.

Same. I also have arthritis and like spinning from the fold in the same manner as you.

I have been spinning my carded rovings that I received after I sent 14kgs of washed fleece to the Halifax Spinning Company in Bridlington. I enjoy the scenery from the Tour de France as I am doing my spinning. My yarn knits up on 5- 6mm needles.

Thank you for this - I always learn something from your videos🙏 I’ve been learning to spin from silk hankies (for a recent stage of TDF). I find it difficult to separate them but was enjoying it…until I realised that the worms are killed for this kind of silk. I am not comfortable with that. I made a batt for each TDF day so my skeins are mainly textured yarns.

I'm going to try your hair clip solution for spinning from the fold. I am unable to hold the fiber over my finger, but have done ok holding the clump in my hand. But the clip idea may be even better for me. Thanks!

Enjoying your Tour de Fleece videos, thank you. I’m interested in how you work out yards per pound and how you translate that into yarn weight ie fingering or sport, thanks in advance.

Thanks Jo, I’m working on something in regards to the yards per pound thing which I hope will make it easier for everyone. 🤐 Stay tuned!
