Awesome job! Thanks for the advice re PVC glue, will save us all a tonne of money. I'm not an expert, but I'd probably also put a patch on the inside for extra strength. You could put baking paper over the top of the inside patch, so it doesn't stick to the inside of the tube on the other side when drying. This is a trick people use when re-gluing valves on kitesurfing kites. The baking paper then of course, lives inside the boat forever which is not an issue.

When lining up edges I've had good luck with putting some duct tape inside to hold things together for the glue up. Don't know if it's right for that awkward nose section you did, but it's worked for stuff I've glued when I didn't have extra hands to hold things. Good how to video. Have a great day.

When you use 2 part marine glue it says to coat both surfaces and let dry for 20 minutes. Then apply another coat and let dry for five minutes, then apply your patch.. It instantly forms a very strong tacky bond. I tried the pvc pipe glue instead, and I didn't get the sticky bond. It did eventually dry, but after putting on the patch I had to put heavy weights on the patch for 24 hours while it dried. There are so many different kinds of pipe glue, fast set , slow set , medium..wonder which kind works best?

The strip has the OEM's trademark on it and its peeling back about 1". Not sure if this strip has another purpose or its just decorative, but I think its just a badge. Should I try to re-glue the seam where its just pulling away from the main tube or remove the entire strip with a heat gun to inspect and install a new patch? If I remove the whole strip can I re-use and re-glue in place or use a new patch?

@@SouthernSierra56 Thanks. I guess it must be a US quart gallon then, and it is about 0.94 liters. For smaller projects with patching, I think it is easier to use the cans with a brush inside. Then you do not need to clean a brush or buy a new for each project, and you always got the right amount of glue at disposal. I have also used a PVC glue, Sabacontact 70T in similar small cans with a brush, but I like the brush in the Plastigum 77 better. You can get one liter of Sabacontact for about 35 Euro, so it is about the same price level here in Europe. Perhaps you can refill the small cans with a brush from a larger can if price is important.

@@geoffpender1920 Thanks for these answers. I noticed, that more of the handles in video was on their way off the boat. I have worked with inflatable airtracks for gymnastics, and they got similar problems and repair methods. I just made a video regarding a DIY handle. There is a lot of different procedures shown on KZbin regarding patching of PVC inflatables. I have always used pressure to the joint while the glue cures, but very few use this method. With this video from THOR I see that the roller is used in combination with the hot air gun, and I guess that this is a nice tip. But it is likely, that the air should not be too hot. For hot air tarpaulin welding you do use the roller in this way, but then the air temperature is much higher. Hot air welding is not to be recommended for these applications, because the joints will not last. Some of the older airtracks used welding for all the joints, and these joints do leak over time of use. Glued joints will last a very long time.

@@t.h.o.r. our temperatures here in India go up to 40 C ... maybe thats why the entire Sea Eagle has debonded ... what happens if I use your method ??
@sewingmachinesindetail Жыл бұрын
@@t.h.o.r. Thanks for this answer - I was going to ask the same. I think you need a special heat gun to produce low temperatures like that. I am lucky to have that.
@t.h.o.r. Жыл бұрын
@@sewingmachinesindetail Just hold your heat gun further away and move faster. I probably make it look easier cos Ive been doing it for years. This is not a short cut/hack- this glue is the same stuff- without the wicked profit margin.

@t.h.o.r.5 жыл бұрын

Thanks for the instructions. Please check out the hazards of getting acetone and the glue on your skin… very toxic stuff.

Hi. I like your video. I am looking to glue d rings to a stand up paddle board. I can find type type N glues that are clear. Are they what you are using. Thanks for you help and interesting ideas www.mitre10.com.au/bostik-plumbers-mate-pvc-pipe-cement-type-p-44117 Sites say type P but info and bottle say type N www.bunnings.com.au/protek-500ml-type-n-clear-pvc-cement-for-non-pressure-pipes_p4750119 You also mentioned a purple primer. Both stores have a red primer but no purple. How do you tell what the correct primer is. Thanks again. Geoff
