I have struggled with combining binding ends for years and I’ve never found a tutorial that helped me understand what I was doing wrong. But this seems easy enough to follow. I think I might finally be able to make a nice binding on my next project.

Love ripping fabric!!!! The best way to get a straight edge!! I have been doing this for years... with a serpentine stitch for the front stitch down.... if you are a scrap quilt gal and trying to use up all the collected fabrics... this is a winner!!

My first quilt top (50 years ago) was a quilt in a day log cabin. And we ripped the strips for it! I still use that quilt.

When I first learned to sew, I think all fabric shops tore the fabric. It's amazing how many inches you loose from both cut ends these days because of using the fold, rather than the selvedge, to "square up" fabric (it's rarely folded evenly from the factory). I always press my fabric open, then refold, selvedge to selvedge, to make sure it's straight. And yes, I do still tear my fabric when I can (i.e. yardage, as vs. precuts)! Loved this binding technique, thanks!!

I love your tips about the binding I haven't ripped a binding in years I had forgotten all about it but it makes sense to get it nice and straight. But I've tried doing it without ironing it in half and I guess I just don't have the patience for it LOL to try to remember to fold and go a little bit and stop and go a little bit and stop and go a little bit I love your videos thanks for the other tips

Thanks for another great video! I’ve torn my binding strips forever -but never admitted it publicly. It not only gives a reliable straight if grain strip, but I find it much faster, and I really like the sound of ripping fabric. I’ve never seen the join done quite like you demonstrated. I will definitely try it. And I love your Halloween quilt!

I wonder why we are so afraid of the quilt police? I also like the sound of ripping fabric, especially when I am doing it. It is very satisfying.

You also can pull a thread to get a straight line. Ripping is a much faster method.

I took home economics in the 60s and we were taught to always rip my fabric instead of cutting with a rotary cutter. No one in the shops have heard of this! I find when I am trying to straighten up my fabric for it difficult to do with the rotary cutter so I think I will go back to ripping for that first step. PS. The photo for "me" is really my mom, who would be 100 today!

My local quilt shop still tears the fabric. She will not cut with scissors. And, I can tell you it makes a difference. I’ve even started tearing at home.

You have revived teaching an old fashion method of sewing a binding on .... this was a way binding was sewn on prior to the advent of TV quilting shows ( Fons and Porter, Kaye Woods, Georgia Bonesteel etc.) They had started the trend of sewn connections instead of tuck ins. BTW I have ripped fabric forever to get straight of grain.

Good info, back when I started sewing they always ripped the fabric when you bought it. Now with cutting, it gets wonky and too much waste.

I always rip wideback fabrics too because they are always folded so weirdly on the bolt. Cutting can be great for small pieces but ripping is a great option!

I don’t rip fabric because it stretches and curls the edge. You can also get perpendicular pulls of threads into your fabric. If you fold your fabric in half lengthwise, let it hang down, and adjust the cut edges back and forth until everything hangs smooth, you will be able to cut fabric strips that make binding that is straight and won’t twist.

In order to get perfectly on grain fabric I may have been known to pull a thread with a pin all the way across, gentle press any creases out and then cut along the line left by the thread with scissors. I can be persnickety 😂 I also wash my fabric as soon as I get it due to allergies and sensitivities to the chemicals used to finish fabrics. How lucky you were your stripes were printed on grain. Sadly I have found often printed patterns are off grain. Your quilt is so lovely for Halloween/Samhain!

I've done the pull the thread on looser weave garment fabrics but I've never had luck doing it with quilting cotton. I've also had prints but really off grain before which is such a bummer! This was riley blake stripes and I've had pretty good luck with it.

Its a wonky log cabin--no particular pattern. I made all the blocks and then trimmed them all down to 12 1/2" so they would sew together nicely. I don't think I've ever done a video on a wonky log cabin but I'm sure someone has. Its my favorite way to use up strip scraps!
