I think that the thing that also makes a difference here is knowing instantly what to press without having to look for it in menus or wondering whats the shortcut and having a glance at the keyboard. When you do that you are losing focus from your actual task, and every time that happens you need couple or more seconds to get fully back on it. So it's not only about the movements, it's also about focus. Good tip.

As your intro hinted, one great thing Vegas does is offer variable playback speed; I edit all my interviews at around 1.5 to 1.7 times playback depending on how clearly the person is speaking, it saves a lot of time.

I wish I had a fast, powerful editing computer which would make these tips useful. Usually after I shift a video clip or insert some text or music, I have to walk off and brew some coffee or do laundry or something while the laptop trips out trying to render the hd files around :^/
@wowrulz392

You should try offline editing if you don't have a powerful enough computer to deal with HD footage. If you don't know what that is, it's when once you have it on your computer, either in a 3rd party program or the editor itself, you transcode it into a lower resolution and work with that. So say you're working with footage shot in 1920x1080, you can then transcode it into something smaller like 1280x720 or 640x360, which ultimately will make your computer run faster because it doesn't have to deal with as big of files. Then once you're done cutting you'll link the media (this process varies from editor to editor) in your timeline to the HD versions.

That sounds like it's too good to be true. So, the final movie after it is cut and rendered doesn't lose it's resolution? I'm going to have to look into that...

It's also called proxy editing. I use it a lot these days, especially with 4k footage. My computer cannot keep up with full 4k edits and final renders, so using the proxy (low-res copy) technique has helped tremendously. Keep in mind though, once you've "swapped" the low-res for the full-res versions, don't plan on using your computer for a couple of hours. (Or days ... lol) Another tip which I'm sure everyone knows *wink wink*, SAVE OFTEN. I am in the habit of hitting the save button or ctrl/S or what have you, after each change I've made. To ensure not losing the most recent edit session, consider doing a Save As and save multiple versions. Say, MyMovie_001, MyMovie_002 and so on. The higher the number the most current edit you will be working on. This has saved my butt numerous times. (Disclaimer; These are NOT my ideas. Others have made videos, written blogs and shared their expertise in order for me to share them with you.) Google/KZbin IS your friend.

This is biased a bit but I was a pro editor using Avid for about 4-5 years and I found the default shortcuts very useful. Later I would edit with both hands on my keyboard because Avid paradigm makes it possible for some kind of edits. Just my 2c. Also using shortcuts made me a better editor because once you get them down you start to actually think less about your tools and more about editing process and making the story better.

I like using the JKL keys for playback scub forward, pause, and reverse. clicking on them multiple times changes the speed of the scrub. I've used this with Pinnacle and Vegas so it must be a common function with editing software.

So has Sparky found him a nice Eskimo girl yet? Today I bought a beautiful, like new Manfrotto tripod with a 501 fluid head for $150. On amazon, it would sell for $325 used. I'm pretty excited about that. I'll use it for my Sony 4K camcorder. Now if I just had something to shoot!

I use a Logitech g600 mouse which has 12 programmable buttons on it and I map my most used commands to it. I do that with all apps not just premiere. Works for everything where some apps it is more difficult to remap keys.

It is, but it hasn't quite worked out the way I had hoped (spare time wise), so it has been challenging to post. That, and the lack of resources make for a constant challenge.

Maybe I'm lucky. I'm left handed so using that left hand home stuff is right up my ally. There used to be a word processor called WordStar. It could be customized but it came right out of the box with Ctrl A, S, W, D as movement keys so you could easily move the cursor up down, left or right very quickly without a mouse or moving your hand over to the arrow keys or something. There were a whole bunch more control key functions but it was decades ago so I've forgotten them. Anyway, the point is perhaps your viewers will see this and try out the idea of using their pinky on the left or right control key depending on their strong hand.

Hmmmmmmm.... sounds like the same functionality as VisiCorps' word processing program I was using in the early 1980's == it worked great, even for a righty!

Not familiar with that. Sure knew Visicalc though. That company was kinda the birthplace of some of the biggest names in software. Lotus, for example and Ashton Tate both got their start from people in Visicorp.

I was reviewing this video and I noticed something which I hadn't noticed before. There is clearly a green tint in your left hand, and if you look closely, there's definitely some green spilling from your left side. Is that a reflection of a green screen?

I recently used Vegas to edit a short narrative piece, because it was AVCHD off a Sony nex vg10 . I'm used to Avid media composer and Premiere. I found Vegas to be clunky and slow as hell. The work flow in Premiere is the best. With the AVCHD plug in it flies. I was severely disappointed in Vegas. I would only use Vegas for converting my files to AVI with 5.1 sound intact.

BUT I can see if your invested in SONY why you would use VEGAS, the ability to import natively the 5.1 surround sound from the Sony NEX VG10 is pretty frippin awesome. An the fact that you don't need to convert AVCHD to edit it natively in VEGAS is great. VEGAS has some awesome integration with SONY products, so if all my cameras were SONY I'd use it. But I use After Effects so much for grading, effects, compositing etc. It makes more sense for me to use Premiere.
