Tip On Saving Money When Buying Electronic Drums

Electronic drums are WAY too expensive. So in this video We're going into the different strategies on how to save money on Edrums!
1. Bundles:
Because of something called MAP pricing, music stores all have to advertise the same price for their drumsets. So certain music stores use including free stuff as a way to stand out in the crowd, and get your business. If you need a hihat stand, drum throne, headphones ect, then a bundle will be a good option.
2. Unlisted Prices
This one is rare, but some websites will sell below MAP prices. They will have a little message up in the corner that says "to reveal price, add to cart" or they will ask you to call them for the price. I don't know of any websites that do this currently, but I know this has happened in the past. This opportunity comes and goes, keep an eye out.
3. Negotiate:
Just ask if they can offer a lower price. This actually does work on some websites. You get better results the more money you spend.
4. Build Your Own Kit:
All the parts to make an electronic drumset can be found for cheap. You just have to put it all together yourself. Ebay has all the internals, mesh heads, modules, and cymbals. Facebook marketplace has the cheap acoustic drumsets you can buy to transform into electronic.
5. BUY USED
This option will save you the most money. Buy online for a great selection. Buy local for the lowest prices. I purchased a Roland TD30k used and saved $700. I Bought a used TD17KVX and again saved $700. And I also bought a Kat Percussion KT4 used. There are deals out there, you just have to look :)

Hey man, so I just bought my ROLAND TD 17 kvx! Been playing acoustic since I started playing in 2007, so I knew nothing about E kits. Your thorough reviews for this kit had convinced me that this is the best kit for me in terms of price, and features. And it definitely is! I couldn’t be happier

Hey Justin - great video. That's really helpful. My biggest problem has been changing my mind and upgrading. Hard to get the right thing the first time, and then they keep coming out with better stuff! Now I have TD17 module with an acoustic set and Roland triggers. The triggers really work well when you learn how to get the settings right. Hope its the last! lol

Just came across your channel recently and it's extremely helpful, so thanks! Question about building your own kit - if I plan to use EZ drummer 2, what then becomes some of the most important features of the module to power everything (i.e., once accounting for the fact that sound quality will be driven by the VST)?

Justin, your channel rocks. I’ve learned so much from your video series. Need some guidance on an upgrade. I have a custom eKit that I built from an old Sound Percussion set. The drum pads are single zone with drum-tec heads. I have a Kat module but want to upgrade to a Roland TD15. My question is..do I need the Roland pads for this module, or will I be able to use the full feature/functionality of the module with my custom pads? Thanks

Thanks Justin. I never hear you mention Iris triggers from Italy. They sent me photos of everything that I requested. I think the quality looks first class and the design too and the price seems fair to me. But yes, the shipping and vat etc will add quite a bit. I’d love to hear your opinion sometime on these triggers or the company. Thanks Justin, Greg

I live in Canada, we have a chain of stores named Long&McQuade. I bought 2 used kits one had been a 6month rental and hardly used (TD-11K) the other was a trade-in in great condition (TD-11KV) both were about $600CA each ! I modified the frames by using the left side and right side and placed 1/2 of one curved section between the centre uprights, then placed the controllers on the last curved section , placed upright in the center (to enable all the cables to reach) the last half of tube is a stick holder ! so 2 kits for the price of one ... thinking of adding a third lol

@@360.Tapestry I ended up getting a roland td17kvx from Musicians friend ordered through their online chat! I had seen the day before they had it randomly on sale for $1359 (originally "$1799") and they honored that price the next day. I also got a KT-10 Kick for $233 (originally $260). I remember why or how but I also ordered the roland noise eater hi hat stand from the guitar center site for $169 (originally $219). In addition I got a noise eater board/pad from greentoe for $110 (originally $145) and I bought it all on a tax free weekend in Massachusetts so that saved me at least $100 in taxes! So basically I got the whole kit for less than $100 more than the listed price.

I spent $1500 on a TD27kv2 with all 3 digital pads everything pristine, store display that was barely touched, I had to buy it, prior to that I missed out on a vad507 with double bass, two floor toms, 4 cymbals, and two Roland single pedals and also a Roland Hi-hat pedal, all for $4500, I kick myself for not buying them then , so when I saw the td27, I had to get it. Great drums and I am very happy with my purchase. My current kit has 5 toms, 8 cymbals (all in a Gibraltar rack). Next purchase the foot blaster triggers, and the Pearl demon drive x double pedal.. so still close to $5000, but better than what most companies offer at that price point. I started with a diy kit, then upgraded as I went and I will keep doing that until I have the perfect set for me. (The perks of not having kids).

DIY remains cheaper than other stuff, if you have a plan. Plus it can sound and feel better, if one is open to do some research. But for a good result one still needs to pay some money. With all the said pros the greatest of them is the journey... Learning and understanding things is nice. And soon you understand, how manufacturers are ripping you off for a rubber plate with a piezo which costs hundreds of dollars depending in the shiny brand name...

So, this actually inspired me to post here as a reply asking for advice. I'm looking at getting a digital drumset for my small apartment. Two reasons, in particular. 1) to play on streaming platforms so I can entertain and practice and 2) I have an acoustic apartment in storage right now that I simply cannot touch. Naturally, I can't play that in this small apartment. I'm somewhat NEW to digital, but I did have an el-cheapo Alesis(?) digital drumset some 12ish years ago which is now broken due to bad heads and bad tuning of heads (I broke the rims). So, I want to really upgrade. I'm thinking the Roland TD-17KVX, since I'm a prog drummer and I get (in theory) three extra toms in the rims. Here's my thing. I have roughly 5-5.5 feet of length to put one up in my apartment, so I don't know if it'll work. On top of that, since this is about saving money, which website would be the best to use? I was going to use Musiciansfriend to buy/order it, but this video has me intrigued on a good, proper and trustworthy website. (I watched the video a day before posting this, so I know he names some places. I'm just curious on doing any type of online searching outside of CL ad FB would be worthy)

I admit to having a 'phobia' about buying used equipment (I know I should know better, but...). I will admit that the 'automatic' cross-sticking 'feature' on the new roland snare with the TD-50 module is a real 'attraction' for me. I am thinking of buying the 'bundle' -- module, 18" cymbal, and snare. I already have a throne, heavy snare stand, and bass pedal/KD8. I would like to add a hi-hat stand and the 13"/14" hi-hats. With that I would be 'happy' (at least for a bit). I will admit that 7500/8000 just seems too high. Though, the 'bundle' is about 3400 (not really 'chump change'[ha!])..... To me, the snare, ride cymbal, and hi-hat are the 'critical pieces. (Now just to 'convince' myself to spend the money!) As you allude, all of the above and everything else is personal. Another great video. And, yes, there are almost always alternatives.... I like how you lay them out.

Speaking of kd-140, any opinion on that vs the kd-120, and maybe even the kd-85 too? I'm wondering if there's a difference in "feel" and rebound.

there's starter kits for 300 bucks that are all mesh and better than some $1000 kits from a few years ago. if you look at other companies and not only Roland, Yamaha and Alesis that is. spending 600 on them is like burning money, don't even bother below 800. think of the Millenium 150x to save money, upgrade later.

I have a TD-17kvx and I love it. 100% would recommend. The Strike Pro is fine, but I would definitely recommend playing it before you buy it (if you haven't already). I personally just don't like the feeling of the pads. The TD-17 is obviously smaller than the Strike Pro, but the pads feel rock solid (and latency is never an issue with Roland modules, which is a plus). Hope this helps.

I'm looking to get a kit for my home studio. until today, i had thought/was sure i was going td07dmk. thing is, a local store just posted a used td25k (not kv) for the same price as a new td07dmk. would i be nuts for not taking this deal or would i somehow be happier with the td07dmk? Thanks to anyone that can help

Do you think it's safe to buy a used electronic drum for roughly 300? Is that too low?

bargaining with the store is kind of a dick move. i worked in a store and profits are about 3-5% on most drum equipment. Audio equipment is even worse. i don't know why people think music stores don't need to make money because they're special for some reason or whatever..it's a company and a lot of those stores are dying because of the big ones

The store could easily post a sign that says prices are non negotiable. If they don't, that's on them. That's business, baby.

@@rchayes1996 well thats probably worse than just telling them cause it feels like a dickmove if you're the only store doing it. And there are some cashcows that allow a 5% discount for example but people just ask for 20% off like it was no biggie and then get upset if they dont get it because they felt like they could have asked for 40%

I will say. Don’t buy a cheap REAL drum kit. Get a good one. It will prevail in the end.
