I went to a fast food place yesterday. We had to order at the counter. We also had to go grab our own food at the counter when it was done. We had to grab our own napkins and make our own drink. Yet, they flipped the screen around and asked for a tip. We happily pressed "no tip." Tipping is for people who provide a service. I'm not going to tip someone for only taking my order and not doing a single thing else. Yet, the stares you receive from the person asking for a tip are not fun. They expect a tip.

Do you order for food delivery? Because if you do and you don't tip, I hope your food is cold and nasty when you get it. I hate the tipping culture. No one should be tipped because their doing a job, they should be paid by the employer a reasonable amount for the benefit they provide to the business; just like any other job. Servers usually make a lot more than 15/hr on avg closer to 30/hr most of it non-taxable (so closer to 40 before tax). I was a server while in university and was making more than at my job out of university, which was taxable, required a huge investment (student loan), and just as demanding if not more than remembering a few orders and being polite. Sorry but not sorry… North America is the only place this really happens. For the people that rely on tipping to support your income, blame it on your employer for not paying you adequately not the people paying tips with after tax money.

If a restaurant is not able to provide a living wage to its employees then it shouldn't be in the business. They wl have money for everything else but not a single penny to pay it's employees who actually work hard so yea it's not the customer problem. Tipping is the service you get and its not mandatory. Most of the outside food anyway is average and service is even below average but then expect you too tip 15,20 or more percentage of tip. One big problem can be seen at minute 3:27. The map shows minimum wage for tipped worker. In Washington State it's $16.28 in 2024 (the map is outdated)--which brings the cost of the food way higher than states that have lower minimum wages for tipped employees (and back of house employees) and the tipping standard is the same or higher than other states in terms of percentage or total bill... Why is there the same tipping standard (percent amplified by price) when people make 5X per hour?

The problem with "included" gratuity, is that people working there *still* expect a tip. Cruise liners do that and some hotels, yet the bartenders and servers on the cruise still expect a tip. Makes me wonder if that gratuity the business charges ever actually makes it to the workers. In the U.S., especially if you frequent a place, your service goes down if you don't tip/don't tip enough. This is particularly true in restaurants.

Unfortunately, the reality is the exact opposite: the tipped industry only exists because the tipping lobby -- occupied by tipped food service workers -- want to keep it that way precisely *because* it makes them more money. When localities try to revise the minimum wage law around the service industry, workers in that industry are the ones protesting the change. Probably business owners as well since it probably does make their lives easier, but they are very much not alone on the picket line.

Hidden fees and forced tipping should be eliminated everywhere. Even tipping being assumed should be. They should pay workers a decent wage and change prices to show exactly what you will be paying for your food etc. upfront and tipping should just be oh you did a great job, thank you, here is a tip. The idea that the customer should be left to pay the workers while they pretend food prices are lower than they are is just as bad as hidden fees on phone bills etc.

Fact of the matter is, it's supply and demand. At least on the food delivery front where I work. These days, if you don't payout a good tip or at least a halfway decent one, your food is going to arrive late and cold and it's your fault. You want these companies to pay drivers more or servers more, but it's not happening and you're going to have to get over it or stop using the service.
