In so cal we have horrible gophers. Would goohers be able to get to the roots of plants in this setup?
@plantabundance
@plantabundance 5 жыл бұрын
If gophers are an issue I'd recommend putting down some 1/2" hardware cloth and building the hugel atop it. BTW I recommend trenching down about 3' and starting the hugel below ground. That's what I did on 2 of the 3 beds. It's more work upfront but allows for much more wood to go into the build. If you decide to trench then you will also want to screen the side walls. cheers!

I do enjoy the hukelkulture method unfortunately it does take time for it to develop. One this I have find to help give this method a jump start is after setting up the base for the much later I like to use straw or leaf littler that easily breaks down in the fall to allow it to break down over the entire winter.

I’ve been removing Bermuda by sections, pushing it back a bit further each year. Starting from the outer most edge I work backwards. First I used a pitch fork to go under to loosen the clumps of rhizomes. Then hand remove the clumps and runners ( as many as possible) Followed by heavy sheet cardboard layers and top with thick wood chips. (Or soil then wood chips) also putting comfrey, borage , and/ or rocks, wood (above and below surface) along edges can slow the rapid return to the area. Cannas also work as a natural wall. Ultimately i go back to the area and remove sprouts that may have been missed as they as they appear.

How do you deal with air pockets that develop over time? I guess the default solution would be to keep adding layers, allow the middle layer to cave in naturally which will result in gaps getting filled. The challenge with my hugel bed is that 12 months is insufficient time for that process to occur. Because air pockets remain, wouldn't the growing roots of a seedling struggle later on with nutrient absorption due to lack of dirt at the bottom layer?
