This is literally so helpful. I normally end up with 70 Bobby pins in a bun and it still comes loose an hour later

Use spin pins they carry the same amount if hair as 10 bobby pins.

Janell Barr why don't you try U-pins? They can secure the bun in the best possible way. You won't need to add a ton of them too!

OMG! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I COULD MAKE A BUN! I can't express how excited I am, lol. I've been following your channel for about 2 years now, and was only able to more or less reproduce the braids or things that didn't require any pinning in place, since I have extremely thick, heavy and slippery hair. But look at me now, I can make buns and all kinds of updos! Wooohooo! The life's just begun!

Thanks, Kayley, for taking out some of the mystery about using these simple-looking little tools! The line graphics over the video really help to understand what you're doing. Just realized after seeing this video why I had been using BPs upside down (wavy side up, smooth side down) for years. Have been using a set I bought at a Walgreens (long discontinued), after I noticed they were touting a different, intriguing curved design to fit the curve of the head. The curved side is smooth and obviously fits against the head. The top side is also curved, smooth, is shorter than the bottom and is lacking a rubber tip, so not the side to approach the scalp. They never did have much 'grip' and are actually quite light weight and flimsy (as I see clearly now), so I added some 'regular' BPs a while ago to my stash as they seemed stronger. By force of habit I still applied the regulars smooth side down. They just looked wrong the other way, while I wondered about how the wavy side could help with grip. They still worked better than the first set, but not great. Even with improved techniques, by using them upside down, I believe I often was still not getting the most out of them. Time to buy the recommended "good" ones! With these clever techniques I should be able to secure my does even better using fewer pins!

Thank you! I tried doing a trick to make a bun without Bobby pins (cuz I have never used them before) and it worked, but it unraveled 5 minutes later! So I thought using Bobby pins would be fun to try, especially since it could hold my bun for longer. Thanks♡ *Edit:* Holy cow, it worked AMAZING. My bun lasted _FOR HOURS_ ! I will definitely share this video to my friends! 💮♡🌹

Good post that gets down to the details and nitty gritty! Looks like tips I could definitely use on my fine, slippery long hair! I needed to slow down the video to get a little better view and noticed the wavy side of the pin was on the bottom and straight side on top? Never have heard on a hair demo which side of pin is up or down. Is wavy side down the general rule? If so, I've been doing it opposite way for years! Also don't ever see you open up the end wider with fingers (or teeth!) to get a bigger 'bite', so totally unnecessary? For such a simple tool, they can be tricky to use effectively!

Maybe could you do modern ball hair styles (I'm thinking like a mermaid braid with sparkles in it, that might look nice) if you look up modern ball gowns (I did with sleaved) you can find some pretty hairstyles and some of them I would LOVE to know how to do....I know this would be a big project, but Halloween is right around the corner! 😉
