A tip I have: break your shift up into three 4-hour increments. It helps you to stay focused on what you need to do and when, and keeps you from being overwhelmed. And once those 4 hours are up, start over. Try to take a break and mentally prepare for the next 4 (then the final 4!)

Yes, segmenting is important at any job with longer hours. In my case, it's 9-12, then 12-4, then 4-8, and finally 8-10. This is based on the work flow.

Im usually in a ton of pain from standing and moving (i work in a warehouse) so the first thing I do when I get home in the AM is eat a good breakfast and take a nice hot bath with epsom salt.

I’m 57 and started 12 hour shifts a couple weeks ago and wow it’s a beast. Like I did them in my 30’s and 40’s but for the last 10 years I’ve done 8. And you’re right I am not happy or rested on my days off, I can’t sleep past 5 hours. Mine is 6a-6p and it’s 4 in morning already looking for some help and came upon your channel. I will buy compression socks tomorrow and a few other of your tips. My knee had a cortisone injection the other day but knee is still hurting and I walk at work on my feet in nursing 11 of the 12 hours honestly. On contract for 13 weeks and I’m trying to make it just one day at a time. Again thank you!

Three days a week sounds like a good rule. I work 12h, 10h, 10h, 12h, 12h, then quite possibly weekend shifts. They’ll tell me on the way home from my friday shift when I’m starting to feel good about having the weekend off. It’s like they’re trying to squeeze those last drops of life out of me so I wont have the energy to seek a better job. I found caffeine to be completely pointless, I don’t need a mood instabilizer.
@Daniel-fo2qf

This happens to me all the time. The boss demands we cancel our plans at short notice and stay at work for hours or come in and work the weekend even if we have thought we were getting it off.

I've been working 8 hour shifts since i left high school, starting at a new job that is 3 12's i thought ....."can't be that bad, it's only 4 extra hours with more days off". Especially with the holiday season we now have an additional day which is 10 hours which isn't too bad , but 4 days with 3 off is kind of taxing right now, but it should only be for 2 months they are saying. This video helped me a lot though , so thanks for putting it together, and not sure if anyone else noticed it or not or if it was the lighting , but before you even said you were pregnant i kept thinking that you had a glow to you , it just looked similar to how my wife looked when she was pregnant. Anyways, thanks for the video .

Worked 8 hour days for 20 years and been doing 12 hour shifts for last 3 years. Biggest problem is sleeping or lack of it. I do 2 12 hour days (6am-6pm) followed by 2 12 hour nights (6pm - 6am) then 4 off. I always wake up early say 2 or 3am when i am 6am start. Tried going to bed early and late but cannot crack it. Seriously what can i take to knock me out and wake me up when my alarm goes off. This is getting me down and am seriously looking for a day job again.

i mean you would think the upside to working that long would be more days off, but i found myself using the first couple of days off trying to decompress and relax; due to the grueling long days with lack of sleep. not only that, but even on your days of work, you hardly have any free time at home as you need to get rest for your next grueling shift. my overall opinion, working 12 hour shifts is not sustainable when compared to 8 hours shifts.

All nurses in the uk it’s the norm to work 12 hour shifts and work at least 4 days a week a lot work more because they need more money as they get paid so poor for such a hard job

I know, I laughed at the snacks part! hahaha I never had a moment to put anything past my lips other than a designated 30minute break! Then again I was only a measly HCA (Nursing Assistant). It's was an absolute joke the conditions I worked under in the NHS.

They are so worth it movable comfortable I like the material vs the 2023 material in scrubs i hate to go Walmart and the scrubs material is like WTF. It's just a cheap material so it's not worth it even though they have colors that most companies need that's the pro but the con is thin material I like a little material to my uniform not so paper thin.
