Tips for driving on the Autobahn: 1) Constantly check your rear view mirrors! 2) Keep to the right (which they fail to do a lot in the video) 3) Stay focused and concentrate on the road and traffic 4) Take breaks every now and then 5) DON'T go faster than you can handle just because there is no speed limit. If you have never driven faster than 130 before, it is a really bad idea to suddenly go 200. 6) Turn off from the Autobahn to fill up on petrol - it is much cheaper 7) If you are two+ people in the car, let a passenger check the traffic situation on Google maps to check for congestions. You can also have a radio on low, if you understand German, but the warnings are read very fast and may be difficult to understand. 8) If you are not hard pressed for time, check out the lovely places along the way, there is so much to see and enjoy in Germany!

The parts in the video where we are not on the right is where we were either passing or in a heavily congested area. But yes, these are all great tips, especially number 8!

Have you seen the markings on the middle and left lane at 3:54 ? these, in combination with a mobile camera on the bridge, are for measuring the distance between the cars. If you are to close you will get a ticket. You where going 140 km/h so the proper distance is 70m. It looks like you are a little bit to close ;-)

My friend from Germany lived in Coswig I believe & commuted to southwest Berlin ea day. He said he tried living a year in Berlin shortly after college & he could only afford to live in the Northern part. It actually took him less time to commute the 90 miles ea day (45 minutes) from Coswig(?) to his workplace in Southwest Berlin vs living in Berlin could be well over an hour on a fast commute upwards to 2 hours if traffic was busy. He said he went km equivalent of 120 mph US speed. He rode with his friend one day in his Italian Sports Car & drove 320 km which = 190 mph! That was the 1st & last time he rode with that friend on The Autobahn he said, it was too fast for his blood. I can't imagine. Living North of Atlanta I sometimes would push it at 95 to 100 in certain spots but tried to keep it around 90. I would be ok if I could legally drive 120 mph daily but doubt I'd typically go faster. I'd love to try going 190 in Germany once just to feel the exhilaration.

Okay, we habe a tire pressure warning light and a cracked windshield. This car ist definitely not fit for the Autobahn.

Then why TÜV would not pass this car?
@ReflectionsEnroute7 жыл бұрын
The windshield wasn't cracked in a place where it impaired the driver vision at all and the tire pressure light was a faulty sensor, tire pressure was being checked regularly while we waited for the new part.
@alterbart79167 жыл бұрын
+ReflectionsEnroute I had a small spider on the right lower corner where it could hardly be seen from the driver's seat. The spider was too close to the edge to be repaired. The TÜV inspector gave me a notice to fix it before the next check. Of course I had the windshield replaced right away. As for the faulty sensor, you should get it fixed! The light is on for a reason - something is wrong with your car. When you lose the tire pressure you will not know. The Chernobyl disaster was caused by staff ignoring warnings and bypassing interlocks. Their logic was like yours: "we know what we are doing". Until you fix it, please do not drive on Autobahn. I do not want to find myself near you when your car fails.
@ReflectionsEnroute7 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, both were fixed as soon as we got back home. And as far as tire warning sensors go, these are a relatively new thing. Cars were driving safely on the autobahn for decades without them (and still are for that matter). Thanks for the input!

Once I asked my father how fast our car could go...he said "Let's test it out" and in the end our car went 220 kph That was even to me as a German intense...but nice

and to have a speed limit in a construction zone is normal, at the beginning...thats for the 100kmh speed limit... it helps if you not only looking forward with tunnel vision only...

I think that the illegal to pass on right rule should be implemented in the US as well. I was going to pass a tractor trailer on a 2 lane expressway, and I was doing around 80 mph (125 kph), and a young woman driving a mustang decides its a smart idea to overtake me on the right and literally squeeze between me and the truck. I don't know what she was thinking, but it was a dangerous move, and I'm the kind of guy who always moves over to the right after passing slower traffic. Wonder why she couldn't wait a couple seconds.

Now if only the majority here in Toronto could drive like they drive in Germany's autobahn. Instead you have a bunch of German cars driven by idiots who tailgate you in the far right lane or idiots who drive slow in the far left passing lane. Oh well.
@NutmegThumper3 жыл бұрын
So, in the US we can go 10-15 MPH over the limit in the Northeast - say 69 in a 55. How much leeway in Germany for speed limits? Both for electronic and cop car. Does electronic ticket you for 101 in a 100 zone or is there a buffer? How about cops?
@ReflectionsEnroute2 жыл бұрын
No buffer, the camera will take your picture at 1 km over. Cops don't pull over speeders unless it is part of a speed trap, which happens, but is rare, and then it is also no buffer. Driving cops don't pull you over for speeding, in general.

Did she just mention you can pass on the right in the States? I really hope that is not true. Passing on the right is the most dangerous thing to do on the highway.

Belgium and Holland have very little Motorways that allow 130 kph and of very little length. Both are highly urbanised countries with dense populations. Also many European cars are typically low powered and may find 140 kph uphill a challenge. Doing well and knowing you have to watch your six at all times, your back and move aside for the test pilots in a6's , x3's 518's etc.......
@edipires156 жыл бұрын
John Dooley the highest speed limit in Belgium is 120km/h, and you can have long stretches of 130km/h in the Netherlands (the A2 for example)
