No where else in the world are you allowed to drive as fast as on the German autobahn. But driving fast is something that has to be learned! High speed driving calls the utmost concentration and energy on the part of the driver. Each year, more than two million accidents occur on the German autobahn.

It's not speeding that kills. It's bad roads,bad cars and untrained drivers. The Germans are just logical. They know people want to drive fast so they make good roads and good cars, and the drivers have good roadside manners. Also it's important to have good tires and proper maintenance.

Statistically the Autobahn is pretty safe, only a few percent of accidents on german roads occur there. Speed itself isn't very dangerous, it's misjudgement of the conditions. With little traffic, a dry road and good viewing distances even 300 km/h+ is no problem, more dense traffic means you'll have to slow down more often in order to let other cars clear the overtaking lane(s), so you'll gradually have to reduce your top speed to match the criteria for safe speeding.

Exactly. Only one problem. Australia's Government had sold off all assets and now the only "Revenue" avenue, speak asset, remaining is its people. If Australia had the Alps, we people would be running around with bells around our necks, 1200m and more above sea level. But, in all fairness it is to mention, we're allowed to live a range free chicken life (still, who knows for how long). By educating their free range milk cows, Australia's government would go bankrupt (faster). So, dumb the folk down, suppress it and you make stacks of money. Speaking of government bankruptcy, bare in mind it's the government for the people I mean here, Government for Politicians is super rich here in Australia. Imagine, alone the money they make from plundering our country, selling off our, the people's property, gosh, I wish I had just little of that, say a 0.00001%, I could retire and feed my family of 165 with, too. :)

So let's get this straight: a tyre blow-out at 300 kilometers per hour is no more dangerous than one at 100 kmh, right? Don't be silly. I like putting my foot down just as much as the next bloke, but the way some people drive on the Autobahn is just courting disaster. You're correct in that most accidents are caused by human error, but the consequences of human error increase exponentially with speed. There are also potential hazards which are beyond the driver's control - like tyres falling apart, potholes, and pieces of flying debris. Would you rather deal with these at 100 kilometers per hour, or three times that speed?

Yeah and that's exactly what you will never learn in the german driving school. If you brake, the guy behind you might drive into you. That's the stupidest tactic you can ever do. And in Germany is the "Rechtsfahrgebot", meaning, you've got to drive on the right lane when it's clear. Because you are only allowed to pass someone on the very left lane. So the cars should move away, when right lane is clear, otherwise they need to continue overtaking the car on the right lane and after that drive in the right lane.

US drivers are wilful, rule bound, conservative spoilers who play a "dog in the manger" grudge game when faced with fast drivers. This comes from a puritanical and fearful past. The Germans realise that people want to go fairly fast in a disciplined way and get about their business. Some of these exist in the States but there are more of the old, wilful, unskilled, querallous, indecisive and timid drivers to foul everything up . Slow drivers in the States subscribe to the philosophy of " if I cannot go fast I'm damned if anybody else can go fast". The same applies to Ireland and the UK in many cases and certainly enough cases to be a daily cause of concern for busy drivers. It will probably take many decades of training, law enforcement, car fleet improvement and road improvement to allow German driving rules to be applied to other countries.

I am a long distance driver. I live in London. Every two to three months I need to drive to Sweden and / or Turkey. Due to my needs to carry my equipment, flying is not practical. It takes me 24 hours to Sweden and 36 hours to Turkey. My average is 100 kph / 63 mph including short stops. Sadly more than 2 to 3 hours are taken up for 34 miles of water crossing ... I stop consuming alcoholic beverages 24 hours before commencing my journey. I drink only water, chew coffee beans and live on chocolates. I eat a lot of fruits during this period: Bananas, Apples, Pears and nuts. On the Autobahn, I let her (BMW 750iL V12) go at over 200 kph and over 240 kph for short periods, say 10 minutes. I never drive fast when I see a lot of Non German Number Plates ... My advice: If you wish to drive fast on German Autobahn and enjoy it, take a short Driving Course with a German Driving School ...the cost is worth it. BTW, fast driving is for Fast Cars ... is stressful and expensive. I listen only to my GPS, Weather, Traffic and Road Conditions ... No Music. Yes, I love fast driving ...only on German Autobahn ... Not fast driving but bad driving kills / cause fatal accidents.

Having driven in Germany you really have to be two drivers. Slow poke in the towns, cities and villages or you will be done. On the autobahns many restrictions exist, lower speed limits in rainy weather, "bei rogen", and restrictions near cities between certain hours. Also minimum speed limits, under which it is illegal to go, can apply. it is not all a free for all. Each car has a spare set of bulbs, a hi vis vest and a warning triangle which must be used in breakdowns as the need arises. broken headlights and faulty indicators etc are not tolerated but many car parks have mirrors where you can park up and test your lights. Do this regularly.

@MSM4U2POM 3 жыл бұрын
"Speeding doesn't kill. Speed limits do." That must be why Autobahn deaths are significantly lower on the restricted sections than on the unresricted ones, musn't it? You are precisely wrong, my friend. For every kilometer travelled, the number of fatalities on German motorways is consistently and significantly higher than in the United Kingdom, Denmark, and even France; it is nearly twice that of the UK and Denmark, according to multiple studies by international bodies such as the OECD. German drivers are well trained and well disciplined, but they are not superhuman, and they make mistakes the same as everyone else. The consequences of human error are directly proportional to the relative speeds of the vehicles involved, and it stands to reason that the greater the difference, the greater the chances of loss of life. When drivers of varying levels of ability, concentration levels and reaction times all compete for the same stretch of road with no limit on potential impact speeds, you have a near-perfect example of the proverbial accident waiting to happen. A more dangerous situation is hard to imagine. The idea that speeding doesn't kill is risible: when was the last time you heard of an accident where all parties were standing still??? Damage to life and limb is caused by kinetic energy - and kinetic energy is an EXPONENTIAL function of velocity! Don't be ridiculous.
@murdoch201
@murdoch201 3 жыл бұрын
@@MSM4U2POM I'm more pointing out the ridiculous way governments determine that 'speeding' would kill. Ofcourse it doesn't, and neither do speed limits. It's the way they deal with statistics and data. And you're making the exact same mistake, my friend. So yes, deaths on Danish (0.8) and British (0.9) motorways are significantly lower than Germany (1.7). Good job. Yet in Belgium (2.4), France (2.0), Czech Republic (2.6), Italy (3.9), ... They're significantly higher, despite them having strict speed limits. Germany is only on an average EU level (source: German Federal Highway Research Institute, 2018) According to the theory that 'higher speeds will lead to more deaths', Germany should be number 1, which is not the case. So there goes that theory. Another fun fact: The Autobahn is responsible for 12% of all traffic deaths in Germany. Landesstraße (max 100 km/h) are responsible for 59% of deaths. I personally think that the cause of deaths is much more determined by other factors like the design of the motorway, the amount of training of drivers, the amount of trucks and how well these drivers have slept, the amount of morons on the road (drunks, drugs, aggressive idiots, ...), the amount of people distracted by phones etc. You're right that once an accident occurs, speed will also determine the chances of survival. But for that an accident must occur first, and where do these happen the most? If 59% of deaths happen on Landesstraße, one could even argue the statistics on number of accidents must be even worse, right? Also, stats show when driving over 70 km/h your chance of survival already drastically decreases. Should we all start driving 70 km/h on motorways? Maybe we should just stop driving, and tear down this horrible thing called "autobahn" or "motorway"? Or maybe we should start thinking about the real causes of deaths and invest in safer roads, instead of making up excuses to raise taxes using speed cameras..
@MSM4U2POM
@MSM4U2POM 3 жыл бұрын
@@murdoch201 Country roads are not relevant here, so let's not complicate things, my friend. I agree it can't all be about speed, but I think it is likely to be the dominant factor. You're still stuck with the question of why Autobahn deaths are so much higher in the unrestricted stretches than on those with a speed limit. It is reasonable to assume that both were built and designed to the same or similar standards, and the driver training must be the same, so logic dictates there must be something unusually dangerous about the unrestricted sections. So if it is not the higher speed, then what is it? Conversely, most of Britain's motorway network is over sixty years old, and hasn't been significantly upgraded since the 1980's; it is better maintained than ordinary roads, but trust me, that is not saying much! Police cars are rarer than hen's teeth, it is jam-packed with lorries, and there are plenty of fools who drive with mobile phones glued to their ears, tailgate others and drive aggressively. You may also be surprised to learn that the vast majority of British drivers have no motorway training whatsoever, because it was only made compulsory in 2018. According to your hypothesis then, Britain must have one of the worst motorway safety records in existence, yet it is consistently better than Germany's. So if you will forgive the plagiarism - there goes that theory! The reason, I suspect, is that because Britain's network is so overcrowded (capacity was actually reached back in the late 1980's), the number of places where you can safely do the legal limit is relatively small. Most of the time the traffic moves much slower, further increasing the difference in average speed between our motorways and Germany's. In addition, there is much greater harmonisation of the flow velocities in the slow and fast lanes, which makes overtaking and lane-changes far easier and safer. Whichever way you look at it, speed (or lack of it) crops up time and time again as a major influencing factor in why British motorways are so safe, and I do not believe anything else accounts for it to any significant degree. Germans should be justifiably proud of their training and beautifully kept roads, but at the end of the day, they can only do so much. There is no substitute for keeping your speed down, letting others make mistakes, and taking it easy.

For me, I think one should drive close to the speed limit allowed on the passing lane and watch the rearview mirror often. If one notices a car is rapidly approaching, just give the signal, take the cruising lane for a bit, and then go back to passing. But there are stubborn people who just won't let you pass them even after you hardlight the shit out of them, because they believe they can drive as fast or faster than the car behind them.

The German Autobahn is restricted for every vehicles that aren't able or allowed to drive at least 60km/h. I don't know how it is handled in the US but that should give you a perspective of what it needs to use the Autobahn. But keep in mind: if you have an accident while driving 150mph within traffic around the same speed, you're in for a rough time. Not much accidents happen on the Autobahn (especially not 2M) but if there are accidents, they're lethal most of the times.

This American portrayal of autobahn driving as dangerous is typical nativist propaganda. The truth is, the odds of getting killed on an American freeway are twice what they are on an autobahn. The main reason for the difference is that Germans take their driving much more seriously. It takes six months to get a driver's license in Germany, and during the driving test the candidate must show they can drive safely at high speed (80 mph). The left lane is for passing only -- trying to pass another car on the right earns a big ticket. So does driving recklessly, even on stretches with no speed limit. Of course there are assholes on every highway in the world. But as a general rule, Germans don't hog the left lane, don't tailgate, use their turn signals, cooperate (rather than compete) with the traffic around them, and avoid distractions like cellphones and animated conversations with passengers. The result is thousands fewer traffic fatalities annually: 3500 in Germany, compared to 34,000 in America. In other words, a country with a quarter America's population has only a tenth the traffic fatality rate. Americans could save thousands of lives per year if they took a few tips from the Germans. First, we must stop regarding driving as a God-given right. Driver training needs to be much more thorough and driver testing much more demanding. Instead of sitting on the shoulder using radar to catch "speeders", cops should be driving along with the traffic, able to spot and pull over the drunk, the distracted, the tailgaters and road ragers, and others like them who REALLY cause America's shockingly high rate of highway fatalities. With cars being so much safer today, why are freeway speed limits still set for 1950s-technology cars? The interstate speed limit should be 80 mph, and the left lane should be for passing only. Cars hogging the left lane, as well as cars passing on the right, should be heavily fined. Distracted driving (texting, etc.) should be treated like drunk driving because its fatality rate is the same: a night in jail, revocation of driver's license for six months, and a $2,000 fine. But to make America's freeways as safe as they should be, the biggest change will have to be the attitude of drivers toward other traffic. For a safe, stress-free driving environment to exist, motorists need to perceive themselves as one part of an interactive flow of vehicles. Trying to go faster than others disrupts the flow, and so does any other aggressive kind of driving. Similarly, going slower than the flow forces everyone to pass you, breaking up the rhythm of the traffic stream and raising the risk of collision. Courtesy should be the prevailing attitude between drivers. The result is fewer dangerous maneuvers, less road rage, and generally a more pleasant driving experience. Unfortunately, many American drivers view other cars as impediments between themselves and their destination. In heavy freeway traffic where it is impossible to "make time", aggressive drivers nevertheless disrupt everyone around them, tailgating menacingly, swerving from lane to lane, accelerating and braking violently, causing a "ripple effect" the can extend for miles behind them. These drivers do not acknowledge other traffic as people who also have somewhere to go. Instead, aggressive drivers never signal, and frequently do unexpected things, like cutting off other cars as they change lanes and giving drivers they perceive as holding them up the finger. This nasty attitude is contagious. The drivers of the cars an aggressive driver cuts off themselves become angry, and the driving environment turns from cooperative to competitive. Only this is a contest nobody can win. The reckless speeder does not arrive at his destination meaningfully sooner than the careful and courteous driver. But there are many ways for aggressive drivers to lose. They are by far the leading cause of crashes and fatalities -- and often they are their own victims. And then there are the traffic tickets and higher insurance premiums, even license suspensions. But the aggressive driver's greatest loss is his quality of life. The anger and, yes, rage that creeps up as a driver perceives those ahead of him as deliberately blocking his way usually results in reckless behavior and a general contempt for fellow road users. The anger and frustration build to a nearly unbearable level and it lasts the duration of the drive, and sometimes long after the drive is over. In terms of quality of life, that is a huge price to pay for . . . what, exactly? The driver did not reduce his travel time by any meaningful amount. His anger at slower drivers was not justified, it was irrational. His rudeness to other drivers was not provoked, it was based on an utterly selfish attitude where other divers were merely road blocks, not worthy of common courtesy. And so the aggressive driver makes himself, and those around him, miserable. And he causes the death of thousands of innocent Americans every year. Rather than make patronizing pseudo-documentaries about the horrors of Germany's autobahns, American film makers would be more effective safety-wise by taking a closer look at what really happens on the far more dangerous interstates right here in the U.S.A.

The answer is simple. Take it for granted that the car in your rearview mirror is travelling faster than you, always check your blind spots and wait until the car in the passing lane is in front of you before making a lane change. It’s not hard.
@MSM4U2POM
@MSM4U2POM 3 жыл бұрын
Quite obviously it's not as simple as that, my friend. Nearly twice as many people die on the Autobahn per kilometre travelled than in Britain and Denmark, and the number of deaths on the unrestricted sections is twice that of the restricted ones. So either German drivers aren't as good as they think they are, or there is something unusually dangerous about public roads with no speed limits. And no prizes for guessing what it is.
@jameslewis8227

@@MSM4U2POM Irrelevant statistics about countries that aren’t particularly comparable to Germany aside, my comment is about how every driver can make driving in ANY country safer, and it is that simple. I have driven in all of the countries in Western Europe, excluding Spain, Ireland and Scotland, and I can tell you that Germany is just as safe as the other countries, if not more. Especially when compared to countries like Italy. German drivers tend to have better lane discipline than most people, which makes them safer drivers on average. In the U.S., where we have strict, low speed limits, and we have a traffic fatality rate that’s three times Germany’s. Part of this large difference in traffic safety is due to low standards for obtaining an operator’s license, which apparently leads to many drivers have bad habits that make them dangerous at any speed.
@MSM4U2POM
@MSM4U2POM 3 жыл бұрын
@@jameslewis8227 Balderdash. A motorway is just a motorway, and there is no fundamental difference between those in Germany and anywhere else on mainland Europe, apart from one thing. I've driven on the Autobahn myself with no problems, but it was easy to see why there are so many more deaths per mile on these roads than in my country (the UK). Germans may be well trained, but they are not superhuman, and they make mistakes the same as everyone else. At the speeds many of them drive there is much less time and space to correct them, so errors of judgement are more likely to be catastrophic; there is also far less harmonisation of the traffic flows in the slow and fast lanes, making lane changes and overtaking significantly more difficult and dangerous - no matter how carefully you check the mirrors and blindspots. Drivers are just human and they are all different, so when you have people of varying abilities, concentration levels and reaction times all sharing the same road, in vehicles of greatly different levels of performance and with no limit on how fast they can go, you have a near-perfect example of the proverbial accident waiting to happen. A more dangerous situation is hard to imagine. Your formula is quite correct, but it oversimplifies the problem. No matter how good you are, it is far easier to misjudge the approach speed of following traffic when the relative difference in speed is high; that takes a level of experience and judgement which is different in everyone. It may surprise you to learn that the vast majority of British drivers have no motorway training at all, because it was only made compulsory for learner drivers in 2018. In spite of this, our motorway safety record per mile is consistently better than Germany's - and has been for decades. A large part of the reason for this is that our motorways are hopelessly overcrowded (network capacity was in fact reached at the end of the 1980's), so the number of stretches where it is possible to do the speed limit is relatively small. The results speak for themselves.
@jameslewis8227
@jameslewis8227 3 жыл бұрын
@@MSM4U2POM I haven’t oversimplified anything “MSMU2POM”, whatever that handle is supposed to mean… You are oversimplifying the meaning of the statistics you have cited, which can easily be misunderstood when being analyzed outside of the proper context. In other words, the numbers by themselves are virtually meaningless and Germany is still one of the most safe countries in the world to drive in, despite looking a little more dangerous on paper in respect to the U.K. and Denmark. The fact is that far more people, from many countries, use the German autobahns on a daily basis in respect to the traffic on U.K. and Danish motorways. I would argue that this has as much to do with Germany’s road safety statistics as Germany’s traffic laws do. Here in the U.S. we have far more deaths and equally devastating multi-vehicle crashes as occasionally happen in Germany, but we travel at much lower average speeds. The point being, that the predominant driving culture and habits, plus the way law enforcement agencies enforce the laws, have a much greater impact on traffic safety than speed alone limits do. Just take a drive through the center of Naples, or Rome, or Palermo on any given weekday during rush hour and you’ll experience what I’m talking about in real-time.
@MSM4U2POM
@MSM4U2POM 3 жыл бұрын
@@jameslewis8227 "I haven’t oversimplified anything." Yes, well I'm afraid you have actually: that's why I said it. You have ignored the fact that it takes experience and good judgement of speed and distance to make a safe call about whether to manoeuvre. This becomes increasingly difficult as speeds get higher, even more so when flow speeds are wildly different. Just looking in the mirrors and blindspots is never enough; you have to _understand_ the information and process it _effectively._ This is a skill that comes more naturally to some people than others, and just because you find it easy, it doesn't mean everyone does (that's complimentary projection, if ever I saw it). Even if you followed it to the letter, it would still be possible to misinterpret the input, and pull out at the wrong time. This is what I deplore about the German system: people shouldn't make mistakes, but in the real world they do; there is far too much emphasis on making progress, and far too little on allowing drivers to be human. We have both driven on the Autobahn and formed very different impressions of it. But fleeting personal experience is by its nature subjective and selective, so it is hardly a trustworthy platform on which to make sweeping statements about an entire country. If it comes to that, I have driven thousands of miles in the United States, and to the best of my recollection, I never saw a single accident. So by your logic, America must be a safer place to drive than the UK, where I have seen plenty; and I wasn't shot, mugged or beaten up either, so there's no crime and no violence - right? Don't be silly. The _objective_ data says something very different; of course it doesn't tell the whole story, but it does give a more informed and balanced insight than anything you and I can tender. So of course it is meaningful, and of course it is relevant. I do not disagree with all of your points, but must correct you on these two. Anecdotal evidence is no substitute for objective analysis, and your opinions about what is and what is not difficult are debateable. Playing the piano isn't hard either: all you have to do is press the right notes in the right order and at the right time. Easy.

What nobody knows is that in Germany there is a "recommended speed of 130 km on the Autobahn" , unless specified to be below that usually when you approach ramps. So when it is recommended to be 130, you can and may exceed that speed, but in case of an Accident while in that zone, your insurance will only cover you partially when that accident happened while you where faster than 130 km. Even if the accident occurred without any fault of yours. Theoretically lets say you where going 260 km and a Meteorite hits you, and your car is completely destroyed and you miraculously survived without a scratch, and you where insured with a 100% no fault full replacmnet of your car , they could say that you where going twice the RECOMMENDED speed of 130 km thus they can just pay out 50 % of your claim. Same goes with the legal side from Police you are being held responsible for your "excess, past the Recommended Speed" So do not kid yourself. Its the same when you rent a car although most rentals cars are electronically stalled at 240 KM

Please be aware... good car and a good road does not make you a good driver... although this is a highway.. even in the cities you wont find heavy traffic on any road like we have in Pakistan especially Karachi.. most of us don't have such fancy cars and roads (which makes the RIDE comfortable.. and not a good driver) and to top that off... we have the busiest of roads with heaviest of traffic..so driving safely over here requires a whole lot of skill.. more than that required to drive a mercedes benz AMG on an empty road... In a nutshell, SKILLS are what make drivers good... not cars and roads..

the problem is other ignorant drivers that have no spacial awareness, they dont look into their mirrors, dont look ahead and just mosey on the left hand lane. Once you pass the car you were overtaking you have to change lanes. In belgium its also a rule, drive as right as possible, dont hog a lane if the right lane is free. If an accident happens cause you hog the left hand lane of middle lane, you will get a heavy fine as you are a cause to the accident. So, on highways slow people are actually more a danger than fast people as fast people pay more attention than your average slowpoke who is more focussed on the radio than on the road.
