Tips for Great Mobile Phone MACRO Photography | Moment Lens & Olloclip Lenses

Sharing all I have learned in 8 years of “larger than life” photography with a smartphone.
A macro lens for your mobile phone can help you get very close to smaller subjects. I have had the pleasure of using multiple little lenses for my iPhones over the years, including Olloclip, InstaLens (no longer manufactured), SquidCam (no longer manufactured), and Moment, there are many others to choose from, I would suggest doing research for one that fits your phone first and avoid buying a very cheap lens, use the more expensive ones if you can. There are lenses available for most mobile phones (Android and Apple).
In my experience, there is no significant difference in the way you use different mobile phone macro lens systems. They all essentially do the same thing, but as with lenses for big cameras, there is a difference between very cheap ones and the more expensive ones. I would consider cheap to be less than $20 (US). The most expensive ones are around $100 (US) but depending on which country you are in, there are some good brands available for moderate prices as well. (I'm going to test a moderate-priced lens for a future video soon).

A recap of some of the tips shared in this video: • Move your phone slowly and very close towards the subject, tilt the phone slightly in small increments and different directions, adjusting the distance till the desired area of your subject is clearly in focus. The depth of field is very shallow, but you can use this to your advantage by selectively focusing on a specific part of the subject to create your desired composition. • The best light for macro phone photography is diffused light from a cloudy or overcast sky, or on a sunny day you can block the sun or move into a shady area. • If your subject is moving in the wind, hold it steady with one hand while you photograph with the other, or wait for a break or shift in the wind and quickly take the photo. • Depending on how your camera app works, you can attempt to tap on the screen to tell the camera where to focus or for setting the exposure, you can also possibly slide an exposure slider to bring down the exposure if it seems too bright. • To stabilize your phone, steady the phone by bracing against something firm. Another way to steady your phone in your hands is to lock your arms close to your side, this does not completely eliminate shake, so you could also try ‘briefly’ hold your breath as you take a photo. The shutter-speed is typically fast enough to capture a sharp image. • You can use video to aid in focusing the correct distance from your subject. On my phone, the focal length for video appears to be longer and the frame is cropped in, thereby magnifying the image a bit more than what you would see in a photo. This enables me to see the subject a little closer and to see more clearly the part that is in focus. Try switching to video to see where you are focusing, once you have established the correct distance you need to be from your subject for a clean focus area, hold still - switch back to photo and take the shot. It is possible to capture a still image while you are in video mode, but the resolution is lower in video mode, so I prefer to switch and take a standard photo. • Your background and or out of focus areas are as important as those areas that are in focus. While you work out your composition, make sure the out of focus areas are pleasing to look at as well. • All of your movements are magnified, even a slight movement is quite jarring - DON’T GIVE UP, just keep trying and keep moving and take lots of pictures. • Move towards insects or live subjects slowly so you don’t scare them off, there will be a brief moment when you are at the perfect distance to see an eye or eyes in focus and then take the photo. Sometimes you have to try multiple times, but that is just part of the process. • You might consider trying “burst mode” or continuous shooting. This approach would be to hold down the shutter button on the phone and create a fast succession of multiple photos while you hold the image in focus. The general idea is to then be able to scan through the photos and select the best one out of the group. • Be considerate of wildlife and the environment, try your best not to disturb the environment. As a general rule, I don’t clip flowers or break spider-webs or catch insects, if I have to touch anything, I do it gently and respect that insects and wildlife have a job to do, so it makes me feel better if I barely interfere with them or their surroundings. • If you encounter problems with photographing certain colors, like reds or purples, try underexposing the image a little or change the direction of where your phone camera is facing, which can change the amount of light reaching the camera sensor. • Be curious and observant. Think of EVERYTHING as a potential subject, even if you think it’s too big to focus on, you never know what things really look like until you see them up close. There are amazing patterns and textures on so many different surfaces.

I'm completely awestruck with your presentation. Your voice is charming and so soothing that didn't overwhelm me at all. I watched the whole video because of how you organized it. I agree with other commentators, moment should learn from you about composing and publixing their products. . When I first purchased macro lens, I struggled (I still do) to work with focus. They advertise the product so much but never include the realistic information for a newbie like me as to what changes I would be facing . Thankyou for this amazing video.

I'm so pleased the video is useful, even with all that detail, I think I need to perhaps discuss more about the ''focusing'' aspect of using these kinds of lenses. I'm actually experiencing something similar with a new manual focus lens for my big camera and it's really the same technique involved. You are right as well, Moment seems to put more of their focus and attention on the other lenses in their line and rarely give information about the macro lens. Long time no see; good to see you back. Overall it seems your key word is that great word 'perserverence'. Personally I find using my smart phone's camera difficult, without a macro lens; the screen is bright to see outside and touching the 'button' often blurs the photo; interesting to see you often use your thumb to depress the 'button'. Hello Liesl, it's good to see you again. Thank you for your lovely pictures, they inspire me much. If I may, I want to give back a tip to you. If you have the possibility, lent an Olympuss EM1 Mark III and a 60mm 2,8 for a weekend or so. The MFT Sensor doubels the focal length, so you have a 120mm 2,8 in Fullframe. But, and this is the difference, it also doubles the magnification and rises the depth of focus. If you put the 60mm to 1:1, then you have in Fullframe 2:1. I do macro photographie since almost 40 years now and I can say, that MFT is the ultimate System for all people, who love macro photography. In my eyes it pushes the limits of Fullframe extremly!! Try it, I'm very shure you will be blowing away. Best regards from Bavaria, if you're ever here, give me a call and we will do a big macro tour in Augsburg and Munich.

I have flash equipment and should use it some time, maybe during the darker winter days, but typically I shoot both DSLR and phone without flash. I think flash is great, as long as the light is diffused, I don't like the very contrasty and bright highlight look that flash can produce.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Liesl! Much appreciated! I'm not in a position to afford any nice camera equipment, but am loving doing what I can with my smartphone. My new Android phone, which I got in July, came with a 2MP macro lens, so that got me started on the road to macro photography with my phone. I felt the desire to step up the game a little bit, so I got a couple of clip-on macro lenses for my phone, one 15X, one 25X. I have loved discovering that amazing tiny world God has created. Wow! Who woulda thunk! Since the first time I caught a cool pose of a jumping spider staring up at me with his 8 eyes, I have found it real hard to kill any little spiders. The big ones are still kind of scary to get too close to, and the bees, and the wasps, and the gnarly-looking assassin bugs, and others I'm not sure of... I mean, my fingers are just a couple of centimeters away after all! But I do risk it when I find one that is pretty sluggish. So much fun! Much more of an adventure than I ever imaged. And challenging too--to capture in focus with everything moving. I've been able to use the free Snapseed photoediting app to do a bit of focus stacking, using essentially the same process you do. What an intriguing and challenging adventure this macro photography hobby has become! I am curious to find out how I'll be able to keep it up during the winter. Really, really appreciate your ideas. And those are some spectacular shots you've captured! PS Glad to hear your dad has recovered! Amen to that!

I love that you are enjoying your phone camera, that macro feature on your phone sounds great and even better that you're able to boost the macro with a couple of add-ons. Yes, I too am still scared of some bugs, but finally no longer afraid of the small jumping spiders :) Does it snow where you are in the winter? We rarely get snow, but if we ever do, the phone camera with little macro lens can capture snow flakes so beautifully, it just takes several tries. I found a waterproof surface like an umbrella works well for the snowflakes to fall on, if the umbrella is cold, they won't melt as fast. If you can handle the cold, there should be some very interesting things outside during the winter. I love taking photos of frost as well, I just find it more difficult to get out in the cold the older I get, ha!

@@LieslHuddleston Hi Liesl. Yes, we do have real winter. I will definitely try snow flakes on a cold umbrella! And, I too have had small jumping spiders jump on me. But no fear of that now! And sometimes other flies as well. But the scariest was when a big bumblebee (I think that thing is probably some sort of a real big bumblebee) landed right on my hand. I wasn’t even taking his picture! I wanted to flick him away, but just in case he was a stinging-type critter, I waited a few seconds (not calmly on the inside, I tell you), and he flew away peacefully. Today when I was out and about, some sort of fly landed on my pant leg-he has a body that looks like a bee to me, but the face of a fly... I just took the opportunity to take some pics of him, not without slight trepidation. Thanks again for the snowflake suggestion. I am also looking forward to your assessment of one of the sort of cheaper lenses. That is closer to the kind of lenses that I use... Thanks!

Years ago I liked Camera+ but they don't update that app anymore and it is probably not on the App Store anymore.

Actually, Moment has clipon versions as well, I just bought one. It's a bit bulky, but at least now I can use the lenses with or without the case

I bought a macro lens for my phone, after I had seen some of your videos using one. But I don't use it any longer. I love to take macrophotos with my Sony cameras and a good macro lens or with my small Lumix TZ202 I always take with me. They all do a much better job than a lens on a phone. Why should I take photos with my phone? Anyway - thanks for your videos.

Hello! I'm sorry I just found your question. I'm not sure if you mean the original moment macro lens? Those used to be fitted with a magnetic system, now they have a case that fits on whatever brand of phone they offer for and the lens attaches to that. I heard that they recently started selling one that is a clip-on but I am not familiar with that one.

Hello :) The Olloclip has 3 different lenses, 7x, 14x and 21x magnification I believe. I tend to use all three and probably did for this video.

Sorry for the late reply, sometimes they stay still, other times not. If I move in very slowly I will often have success. I also find it a bit scary sometimes, ha! Especially with bees and other stinging insects.

What aperture do you use usually for such dreamy photos?

Hi, Will! I always use the maximum aperture for each lens, so for my 100mm Macro I use f/2.8 for my 100-400mm it's f/4 at 100mm or f/5.6 at 400mm, my 35mm has a max aperture of f/1.4. For my phone, I just use the native camera app, the little macro lens will automatically have a shallow depth of field causing blur around the edges of what is in focus. In my video "Create Dreamy Photography with a Macro Lens" I talk about how I do this, but you can do that with most lenses. Using a shallow depth of field can take a bit of getting used to, as you have to work harder to focus in the right place, but for me it is fun and rewarding. I do admire those who get everything beautifully in focus, I just find myself always hanging around those max apertures :) I hope this helps to answer your question.

Will, it took me a long time to get used to my macro lens, I actually had a 60mm macro lens first and thought it was defective and got the 100mm lens only to discover I was still having trouble focusing. Now I use both of those lenses from time to time and though I don't always get it just right, it is a lot easier now than it used to be. I still mess up a lot though. You just have to use it a whole LOT. Use it exclusively over and over and you will get better. I suppose there is always that chance that the focus is off, I have never tested any of my lenses. Hopefully, that is not the case. I will get this into a video next year, but one thing I started doing with my 100mm lens was to put my camera in "AI Servo" mode, (“AI Servo” in the Canon World, “AF-C” in the Nikon World) for macro and that helped me a lot, then later I discovered that the manual for my 100mm actually says to do that with the lens! See if the manual for your lens suggests that, or just try it out and see if it makes a difference. You might not notice it right away though, will have to play around a lot and see if there is any improvement.
