It's the 2019 revival of "Plant One On Me" AND it's Valentine's Day, so I thought I'd go over my favorite genus of plants-Peperomia. In this video I highlight Peperomia natural history, like where they're from and how they grow; care tips for succulent and semi-succulent Peperomia; and even touch upon Peperomia propagation. Some varieties featured here include popular ones like Peperomia obtusifolia, Peperomia caperata-and less common ones like Peperomia dolabriformis, Peperomia prostrata, Peperomia incana, and more.
If you really want to nerd out, then you'll have to tune into the next couple episodes, which will go over some of the Peperomia that I have around my home.
If this video was helpful-give it a thumb's up!
Oh, the wardrobe:
- Organic cotton dress by my designer friend of BIRD in Australia. She does all her own prints.
- Belt by Christian Siriano, using handmade bark, sourced from the second company I co-created: www.lesouk.co

I found you tonight via an Huffpost article link. Subscribed before watching because I discovered the name of the plant that fills my house! It's the variegated peperomia you have in the 'breast vase.' it's a funny story how I went from NO plants to a jungle of these. I was working as a personal trainer in 2000 at a gym with no windows. Suddenly my boss swiped the tiny, sad plant on her metal desk into a trash can. "I give up on this thing! It's been almost dead for a year!" I, who anthropomorphize everything, rescued it out of pity and took it home. It settled right in and grew like crazy. Whenever my cats or kids broke a piece off, I stuck it in water, waited for roots, and in this way 20 yrs passed. I've given many away, several are quite large, some have grown into and around and through plant stands, and that 2" trashed plant has more than shown its gratitude - yet until tonight I never knew its name. Thanks!

Just came across this. I wish I could love peps more! I have one beautiful and fairly large peperomia caparata and let me tell you that it is by far one of my most finnicky plants. I love the way it looks but it seems like it hates when it's even just a little bit dry. I always get worried with overwatering with it but I find myself having to water it every 2-3 days. Usually it droops and then when I water it, it stops drooping. I also recently repotted it about a month ago. It had a little bit of a fit and now it's fine but it's grown so much that I'm most likely going to have to repot it again fairly soon. I almost bought a red caparata but stopped myself on account of how high maintenance they are. Really turned me off to peperomias. Also I can't find any good specific care on them!

Hi Summer! My most favorite houseplant is hoya, of which I have around 40, or so. I enjoy being seriously addicted to them! My affinity for hoyas has nothing AT ALL to do with how trendy they seem to be right now. I just REALLY love them! I killed my very 1st Peperomia, a 'Rosso'. That was devastating. It hurt my pride, too; but, I intend to do MUCH better! I bought another one and so far, so good. Now, my 'Ginny,' after our 3 month relationship, is looking pretty awful! These two peperomias have made me apprehensive, to say the least. I have 2 regular 'Watermelons,' another one that was sold as a 'Variegated Watermelon,' a variegated obtusifolia, a 'Rana Verde,' an 'Emerald Ripple' & a tiny puteolata. I absolutely HAVE TO save and rewatch this video multiple times...AND take notes! (I'm what I call "older" & can't remember as well as I once did.) I've only been a subscriber for a short time; but, this video is REALLY special. You're ALREADY one of my favorites & I look forward to watching many more of your wonderful videos. One you did on philodendrons blew me away! I knew there were lots of varieties; but, continue to be amazed by their numbers. Your content is great and your knowledge & presentation are impressive. It's refreshing to learn from a KZbinr who doesn't try to be funny & who REALLY knows what they're talking about. Thank you for sharing your amazing collection, knowledge and time with us. Plant love! 🌾💜

Great content, Thank you for sharing your love of Peperomia! I happen to have recently picked up a Peperomia Argyreia and potted it up to a 4 in (from a 1 in)... when you realize you may have up-potted too drastically, is it overly traumatic to the plant to downsize again a month or two later?

I own three now of a certain species that I’ve propagated but I’m not sure which. I didn’t see it in the video. One flowered this year and it was a long white spike. Anyway, none of them see to grow vertically. They all get so big and just hang kind of like a vine. It worries me because I’m not sure if I let them get too “tall” and should prune and propagate more. 😬

Your plants are beautiful! I've had my peperomia obtusifolia for 3 years now and she appears to be healthy. But the larger she gets, the more she leans over the pot instead of standing straight up. I even moved her to larger pot. Is that normal? Or a sign of distress?

Hey Adrianne. They will definitely curve downward if you're giving them anything other than top down lighting. I've seen them grow all sorts of gnarled ways when they get large enough. If you want to seem them stand straight up, you may want to try some top down light.

I keep my P. prostrata in a NE facing window. Doesn't seem to mind the cold. I water it about 1x / week, if that's helpful. Right now I have the Ruby Cascade Pep (if that's the one you're referring to) back from a SW-facing window; and another in a NE. Both seem to be doing well, but I'll see if I have to pull one further away in the Spring and Summer when sun gets really intense.... Part of it for me, as it's probably for you, trial and error.

Question! Does peperomia graveolens and the like propagate by leaf? I've tried it multiple times, to no avail

Love this video, thank you!! I've actually discovered the awesomeness of Peperomias through you and started a small collection myself. I can't get enough of these plants! :)

I recently bought the Peperomia Obtusifolia. When I brought it home it was full of dust so after 2 days I gave it a light shower with my hands. Today I notice the leaves are turning yellow. I’m worried did I do something wrong? I have kept it facing a north window. Is that okay?

I'm so glad you are back! I love learning about the many houseplants from you. I never thought of using a better draining potting mix with bark along with the chunkier perlite on my plants that don't like "wet feet." I always learn something from you! Thanks for all your efforts to make us all more informed.

How do i fix curling and mishapened leaves on the watermelon pep? Ive repotted mine in new soil thinking maybe it's low calcium. It hasn't helped

Interesting. What to the leaves look like? Are they curling up or down? I wonder if you're having some spider mite issue. See any?

@@summerrayneoakes no spider mites. they're curling in both directions. some leaves with be curled up whilst others will be cupped downward. then as the leaf grows, it will tear from the stress. should i post a picture and send it to you on insta?

Hey came to check out this older vid because I decided to add some pepperomias to the collection. I have focused on Aroids and Sansevierias now for some time. So I got a "Rain Drop" and a "Watermelon". I have a question for you. They came to me in 5" pots filled with peat moss. I am concerned that this is not a good growing media for them and Miss Rain Drop falls over in her little pot. She's about 10" tall. I am thinking to re-pot, mostly to change the soil, but possibly to bump them up to 6" pots. What do you advise? Thanks Summer.
