I love that you are sharing the beginning of your crochet journey! I’ve crocheted for years and feel like I’m always learning new things - that is the joy of crafting 🌞

I've found things like sock yarn to be good for crocheting as it tends to be more twisted so it's less likely to split. Hobbii cotton is also a great option that I haven't found to split much even with a tiny hook. If you're an absolute beginner and don't want to worry about splitting at all or are having a hard time seeing the stitches I'd look for a yarn with a chainette construction or if you're fine with plastic then blanket yarn which is what I learned to crochet with. But overall if you have the opportunity to see the yarn in person check how easy it is to separate the fibers, the easier it is the more likely your crochet hook is to split the yarn.

I started learning to knit last week and can relate…it is much harder than I anticipated! I’ve given myself permission to start over again as many times as I need to, but don’t give up. Good luck on your crochet journey!

really wholesome video🥺 I was a knitter turned crocheter too, and it was so bloody difficult at the start but now I love it, it's a great skill to have to use in conjunction with knitting too!!

1:30 A note about the splitting-you’re probably struggling with splitting a lot more with crochet than knit because knitting naturally adds a tiny bit of twist in the same direction as most yarn is spun, but crochet adds a tiny bit of twist in the opposite direction. Therefore, while you’re crocheting you’re actually subtly unwinding the yarn twist, making it more prone to splitting. One remedy is to look for z-twist yarn for your crochet projects. It does exist! Though most yarn is produced with s-twist. If you learn to spin your own yarn you can choose whether to spin it z- or s-twist ;)

I crocheted the Sun Pochette by Émilie Luis. It was tedious, I didn't have the propre tools and fiber. In May, I decided to crochet the Fleur Top by Phildar and I found it easier. The brain and the muscles learn !

I enjoy crochet and I'm trying to learn how to knit now, as someone used to crochet. It's tough to go back and forth, and I'm finding myself getting easily frustrated, especially learning to hold 2 needles (or 2 ends of a circular needle) and the yarn all at once! I'm glad you're having fun, and look forward to seeing what kind of projects you make!

You’re not done yet. I’ve been crocheting almost 50 years and find new things to learn all the time. I don’t know why people try to teach themselves when there are thousands of instructional videos on line. Why reinvent the wheel?
