I LEARNED THIS THE HARD WAY THIS YEAR 😵‍💫 Made my best friend some really thoughtfully made bookmarks with huge thought put in and it took me like two weeks and then made two pot holders (I am like BRAND NEW to sewing and all these pins say like 30 mins beginner friendly but they aren't and jams happen and fabric matters etc.) so needless to say I didn't finish almost anything at all so I got them things they would like instead. I think my best friend will love her gifts but everyone else is getting store bought this year 🥲

One year, I made my father a lap quilt. I hear (I couldn’t come home that Christmas) he actually cried when he opened it, he appreciated it so much. Meanwhile, the handknit socks that went to my mother’s house accidentally went through the washer and dryer! You definitely gotta think hard how your recipient is gonna receieve your gift before putting in that kind of time.

Just making 1 gift this year, a hand sewn handkerchief made from Liberty lawn. But gifting it to a fellow sewer who will recognise it for what it is and not think ‘why have they given me a square of fabric?!’. Also, they were retailing at £10 each, and I can probably make 8 from my half meter.

@MakingCassie
@MakingCassie 26 күн бұрын
I can definitely be more conscious of this in the future. I don’t buy a ton of fabric in Montreal, but most of these are from Blackbird (the popcorn denim Coes), Core Fabrics (the denim shop pants, the two ZW tops, the stripe nikko, flower nikko, and grey nikko), and The Fabric Store (the red Nikko, the Andie dress). The rest I’ve had in stash for ages

I personally love Friday Pattern Company's Donny shirt. I tend to make them out of the crazy prints I love and wear them like dressed-up tees. I've got 2 sewn that I wear every week and material to sew up another 2. I've also recently tried True Bias' Lander Pant and made 2 pairs of shorts, have material cut out for a pair of pants, and just got a lovely twill for another pair of pants. I've fitted the pattern to my body and am using it as a sloper, changing the button front to a fly front, lowering the waist, and modifying the pockets. Lastly, I've just finished up a pair of Closet Core's Morgan Jeans and have material in my stash for a second pair. I love being able to reuse favorite patterns over and over.

@@MakingCassie I find the Donny to be fairly fast to make because it skips the front button placket, but there is some fiddliness where all the pieces come together at the center front of the shirt. My fitting note: I'm long-waisted and added 3" to the length.

I started painting Christmas cards several years ago. Some of them I could be ok if they were recycled at the end if the season but some are beautiful and I felt like they were gifts. I know once the item changes hands it is not our concern, no longer ours to say what happens to it. It is lovely to get positive feedback (one bookclub friend framed it!) but mostly I don’t hear anything. I have become a bit more particular about who gets handmade items.

Wow, this is a really good perspective on brand collaborations. I’ve found that recently some of my favorite creators are spending a lot of time and creativity basically creating ads for brands. Sometimes the entire video is based around the brand/product. I actually unsubscribed from a couple because of this. Filmmaking is a lot of work. I’ve considered starting a channel but editing video is not what I want to do. I just want to sew, paint, make and connect. I know that my brain really struggles with learning things outside of my special interests so unless I find myself suddenly interested in filmmaking I’ll just be on this side of the screen.

There’s definitely a fine with brand collabs. I understand why a lot of creators decide to do them but I know for me, at least going forward, it has to make a lot of sense and be a natural fit

Your value is intrinsic to you - just because you are you. I have the Helen’s Closet Yanta overalls but I redrew the pocket (and facing) so it is a scoop side “slash” pocket. I don’t like patch pockets. The facing is a little complicated but I’ve made it 5 times (with plans for more) - heavy denim, pant wt linen, three light wt. canvas, so it’s pretty easy now. It’s basically my uniform now, lol. It started because I wanted gardening overalls but I loved the no waistband, free and easy comfort. I couldn’t wear ready to wear because I am a pear shape and they all seem to be made for straight or inverted triangle shapes. I might make up The Tru/Bias Riley overalls or the Jenny overalls from HC just for a change (corduroy). My favorite T is the Lark T by Grainline Studio. I’ve hacked it too but I love how easy it is to merge sizes and make my favorite while changing up sleeves or necklines. The instructions are really good with both companies. For something new I’m planning on making an Aria shirt from Love Notions. They have great instructions and it’s been a long time since I made a button up blouse.
@MakingCassie
@MakingCassie 28 күн бұрын
I really want to try the Riley overalls (I even have the pattern). Jenny overalls are great but they have a very defined waist and are a bit less comfy (I love a loser fit for overalls around the waist)
@Queenread82
@Queenread82 28 күн бұрын
@ I was thinking about that too. I wonder how well it would work to loosen the waist and let the bibs do the holding up. Or I could just make the Riley or HC Ruby (which I also own 😜)

If you take your measurements around every inch, starting at the hip and moving toward the waist, you will have an idea of how quickly you need to flare out from the waist to the hip. You can even measure with a tape at the side seams to see if you need more or less room in the front vs. the back to help you shape darts. Some pants I have made had a double dart about an inch apart on the pants back, with one dart being about 1" longer than the other.
