I don't know about Spanish verb conjugation but for me what I did while learning French was 1) look for patterns and that way I can learn 1 verb by heart and follow the pattern for other verbs in the same group of course there would be around 3,4 patterns and exceptions but it helps. 2) depend on the sound and muscle memory more than trying to remember the written way "not completely neglecting it" but focus on getting used to saying it first.

I'm doing exactly that on French too. I don't like to memorise things without context, If I have some trouble, I may look up a bit and then get back quickly until I nail it naturally without grinding over the tables without context.

There's a show on Netflix called Tiempos De Guerra that has sutitles in both english and spanish. I'm driving everyone in the house CRAZY because it's spanish audio and I'm watching it with spanish subtitles and I keep backing up the video so I can listen and read the same sections over and over again.

That's what i do, because learning is hard for the brain without context and we need to be exposed to the language to acquire patterns which the brain is good at

I think it’s good to glance at grammar charts. I do for conjugations, to prime my brain. I naturally learned the patterns for present tense with never searching or being told the patterns. I naturally learned all of the preterite tenses. Now I’m glancing at charts for the others, because I believe it will accelerate my brain learning to recognize, similar to how Anki accelerates my brain learning to recognize new words when listening.

Totally agree with your views: I am Polish and moved to the US 25 years ago: I was intimidated by the sheer number of English tenses, but I didn't learn them by ever studying tables, but rather by reading and listening, and practicing speaking. And 25 years later: here I am, it's a long, life long journey. I love it!

When I started with Spanish, I started with the Michel Thomas audio course and found this very useful. I never had a problem with the concept of verb endings.

As a native Spanish speaker I recommend you guys to learn the verbal conjugations well. Because you have to know how to use them and recognize them well. Besides, by saying only the conjugation we kill two birds with one stone. I mean we drop the personal pronoun very often and then the conjugated verb indicates who and when the action is occurring. Also they indicate the mood, indicative, subjunctive or imperative. We don't have auxiliar verbs like in English to indicate time or mood. For example do, did, will, might, etc. And when we speak quickly, you have to pay attention

I agree. I learned this wisdom 2 months down the road. Started learning Spanish on the internet from scratch on November 1, 2023 in my native Poland where I live (and have NO chance to speak). Followed the gurus who --like Steve Kaufman--promote "the natural approach to language acquisition . for the entire November and December I just read and listened to various Spanish stories on You Tube. My Spanish speaking debut in Spain around the beginning of 2024 was a total disastear: I could barely utter one sentence each time I opened my mouth. Changed my approach ca February 1--5 , yes, this month .Sice that day , for ca 3 week I have been learning the Spanish conjugation ca 2 hours a day, almost every day. The results have been quite spectacular. 3 days ago I tested myself and found out that: 1. I can write a daily entry in my Spanish diary fast and without consulting any Spanish grammar of dictionary 2. I can easily follow the plot in a good book for adults, not children. Yes, it has been frustrating for me to learn the Spanish conjugation --the most complicated conjugation I have ever learned. But....I see no other way. There is so much to the Spanish conjugation you CANNOT posibly figure out by yourself even if your listen to it or read it many time. I don't think I will be able to learn the grammar long enough to master it. But I CANNOT IMAGINE learning the language without learning its grammar.

For me the new phrase of irritation in England is 'I was sat there watching' ...or ' I am sat doing' ...and this is even sometimes used by television presenters and newspapers...it seems these people have not realised that sat is a past tense word . Still I suppose even if you get it wrong, it will mostly be interpreted by the listener so its better to get it wrong a few times then never dare to speak for fear of being ridiculed.

Ha... I came for the Spanish verbs, but what got me was the fact that you mentioned that more and more people here don't use the past participle. :D I am a native German speaker and have lived in the US for 11 years now. The fact that people don't seem to like to use the past participle anymore (most people actually don't even know what that is) drives me completely crazy!!

This is very timely. I have been considering putting a bunch of problem verbs in a tool like quizlet for direct study. My language is Portuguese, which I am surprised that he didn't mention, because the problem is exactly the same. I believe in the listening and reading but there are a handful of verbs, especially past tense and subjective stuff, that I'm really having trouble remembering for some reason, and I'm hoping that a little flashcarding may help. I still will try it but I am happy to know that I am not the only person struggling with this. I also would be interested in specifics about the websites that he mentioned that may have some other tips for remembering.

"He dont know no better" is a regional colloquialism and is perfectly acceptable.

As someone who's been learning Brazilian Portuguese for almost 2 and a half years.. I can tell you.. there's absolutely no way to look at charts, study them and expect to memorize them. The ONLY way to learn is by reading/listening a lot AND find Brazilians and write to them as much as possible, every chance you get. I use Google translate a lot when I have doubts and I've learned a lot by using the translator. However I'm nowhere near fluent.. it is a different language for a person with no prior language skills and no teacher to tell them what to do and not being able to talk on the phone

Hey, Steve, would you mind giving a few tips on Chinese synonyms? It seems that the further down the rabbit hole I go, the harder it becomes. There are so many words that have the same character in them, have very similar meanings, and yet are different. It's really discouraging to learn a few words that meaning basically the same thing and then find 10 more words that are similar in pronunciation and meaning.

Do you plan on trying to learn Southeast Asian languages at some point in the future? Unfortunately it seems like they're not as popular but in my experience I find them the most rewarding, especially when native speakers know their language isn't a popular choice. I'm recognized at a Thai restaurant since I'm the only customer who ever spoke Thai and Lao, even if just a little bit

So many people say they understand Spanish much more than they can speak. Does this disprove Krashen's hypothesis of Comprehensible Input? Essentially we have many many data points of people who have taken in a lot of the Spanish language but can't speak it very well. How would Krashen make sense of this fact? Does he directly address this somewhere? Deny that it happens? Down play it? Or something else?

My problem is actually findly out what each conjugations mean and when to use them...forums a full of people trying to explain the meaning of say, eg, Querría vs Quise...sure I can learn the spelling and ending etc...but when and how to use it is sometimes baffling.Both mean "I wanted" in English and used in different contexts.

Quería is continuous, the "want" exists in the past into the present (and possible future). You want something and you intend to put it into action. Quise is more of a longing that hasn't or likely may not come into fruition.

When reading in spanish, I find that I know the root but frequently can't remember what the ending means, even tho there's only a dozen or so and I've seen them all hundreds of times.

This sort of thing happens all the time and the way to speak that's considered 'proper' right now was probably just a bunch of mistakes a few hundred years ago. I think it's completely fine (especially in informal situations) to say "He don't know no better"
