The reason people act like this is because vehicle sales are the one place that pretty much everyone you deal with is trying to get you to pay as much as possible: the highest amount on the car, lowest on your trade, highest on finance and most margin on warranty and useless other products. Beyond that, hard sales tactics with high pressure. Sure, dealerships do need to make a profit and salesman need to eat too... but greed makes the experience horrible for most people. In your example, I don't get to negotiate my bigmac.. but my big mac costs the same at every McDonald's across my city.

Maybe it’s different here in Australia but just before Covid I bought 2 new cars about 3 months apart Different brands and dealers. One was a top of the line Mazda suv for my wife. I haggled with the sales person for about 15 minutes and then she said that I had to meet the sales manager. So I did. He did the usual and insisted that if they agreed to my price they would make a loss on the car. I left and bought the same car through a fleet buyer for 10% less - $6k. Ironically it was supplied by the same dealer. Second time I made appointments with 3 dealers 3 hours apart on the same day by email. I told the first sales person that I had done that and said that unless he quickly gave me the price I wanted, I would move on to the next dealer. He didn’t believe me until I showed him the appointment emails on my phone. I got the price I wanted from the first dealer.

It seems... pretty easy to imagine how people value their time to walk after negotiation. If you make $20 an hour working and stand to save $1,000 if you drive a hard bargain, it's worth spending up to 50 hours doing that. Hell, if you make $150k it may STILL be worth it to walk after a full day of negotiation. Haggling on cars has potential to be one of the highest dollars per hour activities the average American does.
@switchcars14 күн бұрын
But that's assuming that you're actually getting the savings you think you are. As we stated "The house always wins". Also, sitting at a dealer for eight hours is NOT the most efficient way to negotiate, nor the most effective. I'd argue that it's the opposite. When do most accused criminals confess to crimes? After eight hours of interrogation. You don't think the dealers know what they're doing with these tactics?

I bring my wife along, and she negotiates on what she wants to pay, as a 3rd party to the whole thing, she isn't invested in my new car or the trade in, but she writes the checks, maybe its the finance and accounting in her, as she enjoys negotiating. We wasted 4 hours in a dealer the last time, just working on the stupid trade in, but she got them up to what she figured was fair for the both of us. She can walk away much easier then I can, as she doesn't care if I get a new vehicle. 😁👍
@JustinMitchell-l4d15 күн бұрын
I honestly could not care less that the dealer has to pay a small fee when I pay my car off in 2 months. I know a lot of people use that saying, but I mean it. You could offer me $100 and I could not care less.

Your not negotiating with a salesman. Its the saleman's job to "sell" the deal the manager gave them. They are biased brokers between you and their manager. Know your numbers. Know the trade value and similar comps of the car your looking at. Negotiate the "out the door price". Thats the actual price of the car. Example: you "get $700-$1000 off the price of the car but you loose that with the "mandatory doc fee"...

I love Tyler's point about the time spent and stress felt during negotiations when that amount is such a small percentage of the sale price. Trying to get another $500 off a $40K car? That's 1.25% off the price of the car. Assuming you're financing the purchase, when financed for 60-72 months, it's all of $8-10/month. No one wants to leave money on the table, but is $10 a month (or about 33 cents a day) worth all that stress? Negotiate as well as you can, realize the dealer will always win (like Doug said), sign the papers, and then go enjoy your new car.
