Excellent tips! One of the ways that helped me with doing both was to play slow and sing along. The slower I could go, the easier it’d get. Then I’d practice the heck out of it till I could pick up speed.
@jasonstallworth4 жыл бұрын
Yeah dude, starting out slow really helps! I know there's a fancy term but it triggers something in your brain just consistently going through those motions with your hands and voice. And then you can start picking up speed once it's registered.

Jason Stallworth yes. One of the other ways I do it is record the track (if it’s an original), then play along and sing to it. I only do that once I can get the rhythm down and pacing good. Otherwise, I make that same facial expression and hand gestures you did in the video. 😂

🙌🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Great tips! I’m a former death metal vocalist now playing bass and doing vocals 30 years later. We’ve been writing some great material, but I haven’t tried to play bass and singing just yet, but as you suggested Ive tried mouthing out sone words and growls. I haven’t written the titles and lyrics yet, but Im in the brainstorming phase.

That's awesome that you're back in it! Yeah, I strongly suggest singing and writing the song together to make sure you can naturally sing and and play it. I still have a hard time playing those couples songs off my last album.

I used to be in a death metal band called dawn of agony and we did a lot of line up switches but we originally started off as a three piece. I played bass and did vocals. Im not much of a bass player but i said "fuck it ive been a guitar player for most of my life i can do it" but regardless weather its bass or guitar doing vocals while playing is hard af. I had to simplify everything on bass just so i could get by. I just couldnt keep the cadences i wanted to do on vocals and play the riffs right. Its genuinely a hard thing to get used to let alone get good at. Shout out to james hetfield and robb flynn for writing the riffs they do and being able to do vocals

@@matthewberg8874 yeah it’s challenge to play and sing at the same time…that’s why I’m now making sure I write the songs in a way I can do that!

Most I've managed is constant down picking and alternate picking (gallops are a no go). Only songs I've managed is Seek and Destroy and Bell Tolls (and Four Horsemen - chorus section). Also just beginning to stand up and play as well so it's a bit rough.

Man singing playing really is a weird thing. I can sing and play “Stabwound” by Necrophagist, which is VERY technical, but at the same time I can’t sing and play enter sandman. Idk man it’s weird.
@jasonstallworth2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a weird thing and you'll find that we all have our own unique abilities when it come to singing and playing. You always have to remember that the people that wrote those songs can do it effortlessly because it's their own songs, meaning, it's what feels natural to them.

I’m trying to play dying fetus while playing and singing and the only song that I can kinda good at is Streaks of Blood cause it has a nice rhythm to it and slow at that start. I’m Challenging myself to play Grotesque Impalement, it’s not perfect but I can do like the first 2 mins of it.
@jasonstallworth6 ай бұрын
It can definitely be a challenge. One of the lessons I’ve learned is to pay attention to the vocal phrasing and cadence while your writing so that you write it in a way that you can easily play and sing it at the same time

@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
Dude, just dedicate as much time as you can to it and don't overthink the process. Sometimes that's the one thing that holds us back. And don't worry so much about absolution. Give the song your own flavor and style!
@AnkothOfficial Жыл бұрын
What happens is I just start playing what i am singing note for note/rhythmically. No matter how I go about it, my picking hand starts spazzing out in the rhythm to what i am singing, just hitting random notes. What do i do about that? I can play the riff fine, and sing the parts fine, the moment i try the two together, i just end up messing both up or singing/vocalising along to my riff or just playing alongside my vocal. I have honestly no idea how. I can now understand why many bands have seperate vocalists for vocals, and let the guitar/bass/drums play their stuff without singing.
@jasonstallworth Жыл бұрын
That can be tough and I struggle with the same. When writing your own music, it's a good idea to write the lyrics and melodies as you're writing the guitar parts so that you can arrange it in a way you can sing and play them together.
@AnkothOfficial Жыл бұрын
@Jason Stallworth That usually just means I'd have to do a Black Sabbath and sing alongside the ro Iff, which sounds stupid since I'm doing thrash, and it ends up sounding weird, like I'm rapping or something. The hard part also is the fact that most of my songs are written in a way that the vocals don't follow the guitar note for note, and rhythmically, and so getting them learned for live performance is hard.

Well the good thing about death metal is that nobody can understand what you are singing anyway LOL. By the way I know you are using a shure microphone, but which one. I have a Shure SM-58, but even though it has a pop filter I add another one, because I find it doesn't stop all pops

It's funny...when I saw Amon Amarth a few years ago, Johan said 'Alright, sing along with this one! And it's okay if you don't know the words because it's death metal!!' And yeah, the pop filter can be a little tricky
