For everybody asking about Varg's vocals let me just give my two cents on that. In my opinion, trying to emulate Varg perfectly is going to end up with you hurting yourself. A) because you have your own natural tone, B) I don't think he was using pristine technique and C) post "production" (fucking lol) accounts for a lot of it. That being said, what helps me to get close to his tone quality in a relatively healthy way is to use what I call mixed drive. You're going to be using your standard false cord growl and adding in a nasal snarl. You're going to raise your soft palate and place your voice as far forward as you possibly can while adding in a rattle from your soft palate and nasal cavity. The best way to find is this is by "snoring" through your nose. Start with your growl and slowly add in the forward placement and snarl very gradually until you find the sweet spot. I know that's not a great explanation but vocals are very personal so what feels a certain way for me will feel different for you. But I think the key to Varg's vocals is a fuck ton of nasal resonance while maintaining a very solid false cord growl underneath. I know I'm hitting it right when my placement is so focused and powerful that it makes my nose and the roof of my mouth tickle.

NIce you are a good teacher. Well I m not a BM person but I love the genre. Like all the people I love to try to expand my way of feeling the songs and I sing them until dead lol. When I m engaged and feeling the music ....I came out like a Fenix using my own voice tone and the best thing I ever did was listening Mayhem in the woods alone , in that moment I m one with nature and my deep and dark vocals arise in a very spontaneous and even scary way. Nature is our best inspiration to find our magical creative force. But this is only my experience and I don t even have musical formation. Tks for your hints, I m going to use them in my BM favorite songs :)

Hi death metal vocalist here (i emulate a lot of black metal vocals too form beelzebub to abbath to dimmu to marduk) i never was able to do the high/spectral vocals like behexen, early mayhen, etc... the more i research, the more it seems to be just the added layers (reverb, gain and so on) with just normal black style.. What are your thoughts about it??
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 7 ай бұрын
Personally I don’t like to add a ton more f effects or overlaying. For me, I need to be able to easily pull it off live so the less I have to rely on technology, the better But yes,adding reverb depth can help tremendously! I don’t add any gain though. I want that part to be raw from my vocal style. That said, I’m a huge believer in focusing on your own unique style

I think varg just screams his guts out to be honest, it's really damaging in the end, but he never played live so it didn't have effects on him. It's difficult to sound like varg, because in his vocals he uses a lot of voice, and if you haven't got a similar voice to him you will never sound exactly like that. Just my opinion tho, I could be wrong
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 4 жыл бұрын
@@biological_slicer That’s a good point about style. Everyone has their own unique voice. This is why I don’t feel that people should try to sound like someone else. Hhhm okey great a few days ago I was with my band for the second time. And my singing wasn't as good as the first time. And now I want to try this too. Also what I just discovered. is that if I start throat singing and then higher and higher until I can't do anymore and then put a little more force behind it, then I have black metal scream. and it doesn't hurt me either.

Good day, sir. You made a great video, there was nice lines about holding air, vocal warm up. But to be truly genuine I must admit that your vocal style has little to do with any eerie screams or falsetto-screams. Surely, there are many individual style in music, I mean, some use clean vocals, others whisper in the mic, some do that legendary fry screams that I think everybody hoped to see in the video. Correct me if I am wrong but there's no fry-screaming from you, it should've sound like frying something on a pan. Well you demonstrated a strange wheezing not very similar to anything black metal. It is in fact putting a strain on your voice, moreover it can be a reason for some to achieve the same tone as yours and take damage due to it. I seriously hope you'll revise this topic someday and do a proper video on the subject.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 4 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion. And to be honest, I don't even know what fry-screaming is. And I will more than likely do more videos on this topic, as it is indeed a unique vocal style. As far as damaging my voice, there's nothing that I do that will damage my voice (or would have been damaged a long time ago). It could be that I'm not explaining my technique well enough, and need to get better at that. But I'm super careful when I'm singing my own tracks like this, and the methods I'm using have worked for me.
