4:15 This is a common misconception I see in a lot of art instruction. The shadow color temperature is determined by the color of the ambient light. It's not always just the opposite temperature of the direct light. Ambient light mostly takes on the color of the object it is reflecting off of, so a warm light illuminating a room with warm-colored objects will produce warm shadows as well. The reason the misconception is so prevalent is because the most common form of lighting is natural outdoors light. In that situation the direct light from the sun is warm, but the ambient light comes from the sky which in common painting settings is around noon when the sky is blue. That said, it's common to do warm light/cool shadow just because it makes for visually appealing contrast.
@actafewlactafew6 ай бұрын
I drew myself and I didn't have lighting with any warm colours, so it was just cool colours.. Not visually appealing lol.

Oh yeah , you’re absolutely right ! I will pin your comment so people can see this 😅 I’m just so used to drawing characters without any background that I always tend to go with the most simple scenario and this info has completely left my head 🥲

i really really SUCK at lighting so thank you for the extra info of lighting i could work with. i really need to study lighting and colouring man...
@zara805810 күн бұрын
Well, that's where relativity comes into play. Even if warm light creates warm shadows, the shadows are STILL cool, compared to the light. Generally speaking, blue is a cool tone, and red is a warm tone. Orange is closer to red, so Orange is a warm tone. If you have orange lights, but the shadows are a less saturated orange, the less saturated orange is further away from red, therefore they're cool when compared to the orange, which is warm.

As a traditional artist who has been dabbling in digital art for years and never understanding how the heck to actually get it to look good, this was amazingly helpful. I’d been trying to do everything just by painting it regularly without utilising the features that make digital art so cool like you’ve shown here. Thank you!

in all honesty, you being a self-taught artist and not really using the right terms made this easier to understand so i, as a school taught artist taught using the real terms and all the confusing stuff, found this super entertaining and simple to follow and take note of. thank you for that🙂

Apparently you have a set amount of “energy” when drawing. I heard suggestions that if you do the sketch today (especially if it takes a lot of time) your brain would be tired so you might need to take a break.

Definitely use clipping masks, have been using them for years for shadows and highlights, they are a lifesaver. A lot of my recent art is more of cell shading too because I've been arting for a long time and I've gotten lazy over the years xD your tutorial is fantastic, A+

You explained it perfectly, and I know that everybody renders differently, but this is at least a great base. Keep the videos coming, PLEASE! 😅 Can we get some drawing tuts for features (ex. Eyes, lips, hair, noses, etc) too? That would be a great help! Can you tell us how you got into drawing? What drove you to self teach yourself and persevere through the beginning stages of drawing? What are your favorite things to draw? Have you ever considered making a Webtoon? I would love to see your OC’s in different situations. ❤

The tip about knowing how to do makeup = knowing how to render faces, is so true. Im both an artist and a makeup artist and when I went to college for cosmetics, my faces improved soooo much. My idea of forms of the face, planes of the face, blush, and dimension changed to much [for the better] by learning more about makeup and practicing it on many different faces. Makeup is essentially just rendering your own face to be more smooth, vibrant, or detailed so... just do your drawings makeup and you're good!
