The feeling of flying has always fascinated us humans - sailing on one hull comes very close. In this video, we show you how to do it.

You should first start on a beating course. You can fix the traveller in the middle. Now get the sails tight. If there is enough wind, you now only need to bear away slightly and the windward hull will lift out of the water. Make sure to pull the tiller towards you with a lot of finesse. When the hull is about 10 to 20 cm above the water, straighten the rudder. You can lower the hull by luffing up - you can raise it by bearing away.
It takes getting used to before you can sail longer distances on one hull. This requires a lot of tact and experience. Try to approach it slowly. Bear away briefly to raise the hull and luff again immediately afterwards to lower it. If you can do this in a controlled way, you can keep the hull in the air for longer and longer passages. The boat is fastest when the windward hull hovers just a few centimetres above the water surface.
How much the windward hull lifts depends, of course, on other factors:
By sensitively raising the mainsheet, you can prevent too much heeling.
If you lean your upper body outwards, you counteract the heeling. The riding straps give you good support.
If you notice that the catamaran is rising too high out of the water, open the mainsheet and lean your upper body far back. This is usually enough to prevent capsizing.
If it is already too late, you can learn how to right your boat in the video "Righting a catamaran after capsizing".
Sailing on one hull on a broad reach course is more demanding. In this case, the rudder movements have exactly the opposite effect with regard to the upward and downward movement of the hull. Therefore, you should definitely start on a beating course.
The Grabner Sailing Academy Team wishes you lots of sailing fun!
