Great detailed advice as usual, and always a pleasure to watch. Thanks Tom!

Roll casting really takes the pain out of using split shot, although with practice a regular back cast works also. Another great video, Tom.

I've put it on the tag. But you're right, sort of a necessary evil to use shot when you have to. I think it was Larry Tullis in his nymph book had a few weighting methods that were interesting but he advised checking local regs first. Always the best tips Tom, thank you and happy New Year!

i have dropped at least as many shot into the water as I have successfully attached to the leader.

1:18 Where does the extra knot comes when you add the weight above your surgeons knot? The knot to your tippet is there anyways. What am I missing?

I recently headed out to the creek with a double nymph and split shot dropper setup, but it ended up being more trouble than it was worth. The rig tangled so badly that I’ve sworn off using tags for nymphs-too much time wasted re-rigging and untangling. I also saw a tip in a video recommending not to tie a knot to stop the split shot, allowing for easier unsnagging. But without a knot, the split shot kept slipping off after just a few false casts. I’m guessing that advice works best for short, gentle casts, but it wasn’t practical for my style of fishing.

I've been using Orvis' tungsten putty in place of split shot. Is it best to add it in a little ball or as a thin rope?

It’s generally used to put “over” a small split shot(#6 lead or #4 tin is ideal). Putty won’t stay in place on its own very long. You can try putting it on a knot or tippet ring, but both of those fail often too.

Thanks for video but use of lead balls on the tippet, as well as the bite indicator, is not allowed in most EU countries
