Top Ten Tips for a Powerlifting Meet
0:00 Intro
1. (0:17) Open light. Nate recommends ~90% of a 1RM you recently hit in training. You do this to gain confidence and hone in on your technique for attempt number two and three.

2. (0:45) Read the rule book. You should know which equipment is allowed and how the judges will be judging your critique. Here is a link to the up-to-date USAPL handbooks www.usapowerlifting.com/rules...
3. (1:02) Tell people it's your first powerlifting meet. They will be more willing to help you out, answer your questions, and give suggestions/advice that you wouldn't have even thought of asking about.
4. (1:11) Bring snacks. A powerlifting meet is an all day event. Ideally these are fast digesting carbs. Nate's go to snacks are gummy bears, pretzels, and gatorade.

5. (1:52) Create an attempts chart. USAPL gives you one minute before you must select the weight of your next attempt, so you should have a general idea beforehand. Nate recommends creating an excel sheet with a conservative, ideal, and aggressive approach for attempt number two and three of each lift. Make sure these attempts are listed in KILOGRAMS.
6. (2:17) Write out your warmup weights beforehand in KILOGRAMS. One less thing to worry about when it comes to meet day. Keep in mind you will be more than likely sharing a platform with multiple other lifters in your flight, so your warmup weights may not be exactly what you had planned.
7. (2:40) Bring a formal coach or a friend who has experience in a powerlifting meet. They will be able to guide you and yet again provide one less worry for the big day.
8. (2:59) Email the director of the meet any questions you may have. It is better to ask for help ahead of time than it is to go into the meet blind. This route also provides you sufficient time to follow up with more questions that may lead from your first set of questions being answered.
9. (3:22) Don't cut weight for your first meet. There will be plenty things to think and prepare for on this day. In Nate's opinion, a weight cut is another one that can and should be removed from your first meet.
10. (3:34) Have fun. You are there to get experience. Invite your friends and family to cheer you on and plan something to do afterwards. If the meet doesn't go the way you anticipated just remember: it is only your first meet.
