Jobs I personally enjoy: Black Mage - Big explosions, relatively high skill ceiling. Machinist: Mobile ranged dps with some very satisfying animations (Including Drill, Flamethrower, Autocrossbow, and Air Anchor). Gunbreaker: Technically a tank, actually 3 dps in a trenchcoat.

I find the fact that I can arrange my hotbar with abilities I haven't unlocked yet incredibly useful so I don't have to relearn the hotbar every time I get a new toy to play with.

you can even try out those skills in the Palace of the Dead (PoTD) prior to actually obtaining that level within the main game. PoTD is unlockable around lvl 20 in Gridania.

I don't see this mentioned in the comments but when guides say that you need to be a certain level, what they mean most of the time is the level of the MSQ you are at. Like when they mention you can unlock mounts at lvl 20, they really mean that it is unlocked at MSQ lvl 20. Everything in this game is locked behind a combination of your character level and MSQ progression. This is why the most important thing to do is your MSQ progression. The next important is to do your class/job quests because they will lock skills/abilities for you class/job behind those quests.

@@Amovetv I think a lot of those guides are also outdated since those quests used to only care about your class level. In original ARR, you had to have a certain other class to level 15 before a Job would unlock. For example, to unlock Paladin, you had to not only have your Gladiator at 30, but also level Conjurer to 15 (you could borrow abilities from other classes, thus Paladins could cast Cure and Stoneskin, a Conjurer shield that has been now removed from the game). I think Shadowbringers was the major switch to "MSQ must be here to unlock X Job Quest".

The reason you're over leveled for everything is you have the road to 70 buff, they give this to new players on underpopulated servers. It's a straight up 2x XP buff. (I see the buff icon in your summoner gameplay footage). This does mean you can level 2 classes to 70 with just MSQ experience (or even 3 if you throw in the odd random dungeon).

Yep. Road to 70, plus the ring, plus the MSQ XP buffing they did in 5.0 adds up to crazy overleveling. It'll work itself out in the end. The Road to 70 buff isn't permanent, the ring only lasts until 30, and the MSQ buff, while hefty, isn't as massive as it sometimes feels.

I didn't have the road to 70 buff, but I was still a solid 10 levels+ above MSQ. I imagine it's mostly the XP buff that Matthew mentioned, if I knew I would be so over-leveled, I woulda leveled up multiple jobs at once to balance it all out. Leveling additional jobs to 70 for ShB was big pain. I wanted to start the MSQ asap because everyone said it's amazing, but I didn't want to waste all that XP so I had to grind out some additional classes for it.

My tip for new players is to explore your settings. There are some huge QOL changes in the settings that will make things a lot easier. Just scroll through every single tab in the settings and see what jumps out to you. Also the hud editing screen can change your play experience if you figure out all the nuances.

Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but slidecasting for casters is SUPER useful at high levels and smart to get down at low levels. Long story short that moving during casts does NOT cancel your cast if you move at the very end, so you can move sooner than you think. If you have an emote in your bar, as soon as it lights up is when you’re good to move for reference. Hope this helps! Edit: To put one in for my machinist brothers, your gcd is basically 1.5 seconds and you have ogcds/burst damage for days. Plus flips and crazy jumps, it’s fun.

Red mage: I think it is the easiest caster to get into. Really satisfying and easy to understand rotation with flashy animations and good utility. Astrologian: if you want your head to explode as you explore how different healing is from another MMOs then I recommend Astro. It is the most planning required job with its own card minigame 😀 Gunbreaker: if you want to be a dps but you want short queue times. The gunbreaker Continuation combo is one of the most exciting mechanics on tanks so it is quite fast paced and thrilling to play. Dancer: the most RNG based job in the game but it is really easy to understand and the dancing minigame is really enjoyable. Dark knight: it has a really good story, it is worth it to unlock it just to experience the story.

Just to note, yes the rule of thumb is you can go back into where you were standing after a cast telegraph BUT it is good to know that there are some attacks that will damage you if you walk back into the animations but these are rare. For example channeling type skills like flame throwers. The job quests can be really good stories themselves. For example the Dark Knight story is great.

Dragoons are the Hunter of FFXIV for sure. They have a meme reputation as floor tanks (their rotation and jump skills can frequently lead to deadly oops). That said class balance in Final Fantasy is actually really exceptional and anything can be played well. The variance comes from what you want to do, where some jobs might be better at that specific thing than others. Personally I've played Dancer, Samurai, Red Mage, and Ninja the most and I love them all for various reasons. Dancer is probably my favorite of the bunch, because it is high mobility, with some fun support powers thrown in. Finally a special shout out to Ninja (mostly rogue) as it has a fantastic job quest and is very cool, and also challenging to learn.

Here are the jobs I personally play and what I think are the selling points for these jobs: 1. Dark Knight: It's the tank job with the gigantic sword and dark aesthetic. Gameplay is smooth and easy to understand. This job also has a lot of oGCDs. ALSO, it has one of the best job quests in the game. It's definitely my favorite job questline. 2. White Mage: easiest healer to learn but still pretty fun and smooth to play. I find it great for prog and I think many share the same opinion. Reaching level 30 also unlocks a sidequest that gives a unicorn mount. 3. Red Mage: my favorite DPS. It's a hybrid caster in so many respects. The basics of RDM's gameplay is that it builds up White and Black mana by using White and Black Magic. Upon building enough mana, you spend it with a melee combo. Then the melee combo unlocks 2 big finisher spells. The oGCDs affect how fast and how frequent you can do the general gameplay loop, and also you get a gap closer and backstep to help with getting in range. And in true hybrid fashion, you also get a nice heal spell and a battle raise. This is great because Red Mage has a trait called Dualcast that makes every other spell an instant cast. 4. Samurai: if you like a melee job that flows smoothly and pumps out very big numbers, go for this one. 5. Bard: If you like DoTs, party buffs and utility, and some RNG in the rotation, go for this job. Also, Bard allows you to play songs 6. Scholar: it shares levels with Summoner so it's convenient to have. This healer job feels tactical to play since it has a lot of tools for all sorts of situations.

I dont know if someone mentioned this but here is my typ when you are casting something. Slide casting: Is a method in which you can start moving at almost at the end of the cast. So if you cast a spell and there is like 0.40 sec left and you move your cast still goes off. Its requires a little bit of practice. Or you can get an plugin that shows you when you can move - if you dont want to there is another trick. Watching your mana. Mana spends before you finish full cast so when it does you can move and the cast still goes off.

Also a tip for GCDs - something interesting is that there's an ability "buffer" in the game. While this can work a touch differently for casters (depending on spell cast times) this allows you to queue up a GCD ability before the cool down of your previous GCD has finished. Imagining that the little swirling circle is a clock, if you activate the next ability just after the 9 o'clock mark (probably a touch closer to 10 o'clock) your next GCD will begin casting the moment it is capable of doing so. Great for maximising DPS/APM if that's your thing!

One easy way to check if you have available job quests is to look on the top left when not in a dungeon. You have the "Current Main Scenario Quest" And bellow the name of the MSQ (you can click on it to see the location) and bellow it, if you have a job quest you'll see an exclamation mark with the name of the quest (again you can click it to see the location). For exemple on 10:16 you have the quest "Austerities of the Earth" job quest. As for the MSQ quest, and from what I remember, that's more of an Summoner problem, since you have to have done the Primal fight in the MSQ first before you get the summon.

If there is no music, it's quest text you can skip. That is my main cue. Also, if there is quest text immediately after a cut scene, it's usually a bit of a recap.

Something to note on Summoner is that they sort of have it the worst out of all the jobs on progression in the job questline being blocked by MSQ progress, for lore reasons. But yeah not many resources mention the job progression MSQ block because it doesn't matter most of the time, but Road to 70 is a VERY strong buff.

As summoner you also have scholar as a second job available to you, juts do the job quest for it and bam you got a second class (healer) you can play. Some classes start at higher level so just unlock them and give em a spin.

Quick note about Job Quests! Around the top left by default, where you mentioned seeing your current main story quest, there's sometimes a little white arrow below it with a quest name. If it's there, this is your currently available job quest for your current job, and you can click it the same as the MSQ button. Also if you're looking for a fun melee and like tanking, Gunbreaker (unlocked at Lvl 60 of any other job from gridania) is a really fun and fast paced tank class, with quick combos and an enjoyable resource to manage Imo.

OK. Time for my essay on the jobs First a note about roles. The advantage to sticking to one or two roles is the ability to share most of your gear between them. The advantage of leveling a variety of roles is both a varied experience and the fact that starting in Shadowbringers role quests largely replace role quests and both Shadowbringers and Endwalker will have questlines locked behind the completion of all the role quests. This is what motivated me to level a tank. The first batch of jobs to consider are the ones that are available to you right now. By role Caster: Black Mage - This is the most “goth” of the casters dabbling in forbidden magics. Aesthetically the job sets favor black robes and pointy hats that usually cover one eye. Gameplay wise they have a damage phase with fire spells and a recovery phase with ice spells. While this changes at high levels of play they are also the most “turret” like of the casters and are probably the job most frequently rescued by the healer to yoink them out of the way of a mechanic because they are trying to complete their cast. You can pick it up at the Thaumaturges’ guild in Ul’dah. Tanks - Right now your options are Marauder/Warrior and Gladiator/Paladin. I’ve found it hard to get past the goofy story for Marauders. Paladins play very smoothly and have your standard sword and shield Paladin look. Marauders’ guild is in Limsa and Gladiators’ guild is in Ul’dah Melee - There are several available to you right now, but I found Lancer/Dragoon to be the most accessable. They are known for dramatically leaping into battle with their spear and just as dramatically backflipping off of boss platforms to their death. A bonus is that the 30-50 job quests give you a bit of an intro to the backdrop and characters of the Heavansward expansion. You can start this job in Gridania Ranged Physical - The only option at your level of progression is Archer/Bard At lower levels this feels a lot like a WoW marksmanship hunter. When it becomes Bard at level 30 you start gaining a lot of party buffs. Also with Endwalker Bard will be the only DPS with multiple DoTs. You can start this job in Gridania. Healers - As a Summoner you will share level with Scholar. I recommend at least keeping up with your job quests on that in case you ever want to dabble, however Conjurer/White Mage is usually a better introductory healer. As an aside if you have any desire to bring in @joceplays you might mention that Conjurers get a pretty unicorn mount at level 30. Conjurers start in Gridania. The next batch of jobs are available on the free trial. You have to gain access to the primary city in the Heavansward expansion to learn them. Machinist is Ranged Physical and Astrologian is a Healer. However of most interest to you I think will be Dark Knight. Dark Knights are the “goth” tanks and are the ones who wield the oversized swords. Jobs introduced in Stormblood are available at level 50 in areas you currently have access to, but they require you to have purchased the game but if you purchase the game can actually be accessed before the Heavansward jobs. Samurai for melee and Red Mage for Caster. Red Mage is a build and spend job that builds up power through casting spells before leaping into melee and spending in a melee combo before backflipping either to safety or off a platform. Their dual cast feature allowing them to cast everyother spell instantly gives them a lot of mobility. They also improve their DPS by wearing bright red and big feathered hats. Both jobs start in Ul’dah. Shadowbringers and Endwalker jobs are going to be out of reach for some time for you, but I will note that Reaper being introduced in Endwalker is a Melee DPS job that is expected to steal the Edgelord title from Dark Knight. They wield a huge scythe and if their job armor design is anything to go by they have murdered a Black Mage to steal their hat.

To make you feel better, I didn’t know I can click on the big Crystal until I reached lvl 80… On you hud, it is recommended that you exposed the boss HP, Boss status and Boss progress bar separately. That way you can rely on the boss progress bar to time when you need to get out of an AOE. Make that bar as large as you are comfortable with and put it right in the middle. You most likely don’t have to worry about this until you get to the later part of Stormblood, as MAQ Content before that are fairly easy. In end game raids, you will find yourself looking at the boss progress bar a lot. So might as well get used to it early on.

That one is easy : Dark Knight! Not only is considered the best job story it is also the Edgy Lords of it all. If "The Black Parade" was a job in FFXIV it definitely is Dark Knight (that is until we get Reaper, than we will see). Unfortunately you will only be able to play it once you get to Heavensward, which is also one of the best stories in game, so look forward to it. Also, I never heard Ninjas to be the "Hunters" of FF but instead that would be the Dragoons of the world: they are very hoppy boys and that makes them go, either into or jumping out to their deaths in AOEs and cliffs.

Okay, so AOE damage: You can run back in to AOE attacks once the marker disappears EXCEPT for some firebreath attacks. Usually in dungeons from bosses. Basically if the attack is going to do continuous damage on the area its effecting, you'll get hit if you move back in, even if the marker for it is gone and its in animation phase now..

Ninja is probably the most complicated class to master from a player skill cap perspective. The game literally punishes them when they do a rotation wrong. They use a symbol combination system to trigger different abilities in their kit: Do one set of symbols/button combo get result A, do another button combo get result B. This is basically like the Ninjitsu magic system from Naruto. However, if you do this button Combo wrong, you spawn a Rabbit on your head as a Dunce Hat of shame and are locked out of your abilities for 5 seconds. Hence their nick-name "Rabbit Mages". This means it's very common for there to be average or below average Ninjas since the player, skill wise, has to work twice as hard in order to do the same levels of damage when compared to a more simple Job. Lancer/Dragoons are sometimes referred as ''Floor tanks''; until Reaper comes in End Walker, they are the only ones able to use the 2nd heaviest armor types (Right below normal tank armor), which means for a DPS they have alot of defensive stats hence the joke that Dragoons are Off-Tanks. However, Dragoon requires alot of situational awareness to play correctly. As players who are below average skill end up using their Jump Abilities (Movement displacement) at the wrong moments and getting themselves killed due to Animation locking during the ability (ie: Jumping off the edge of the combat arena, or jumping into a Boss's AoE attack). Hence the nick-name "Floor Tank".

Rogue/Ninja is a great damage job. They have a system that allows them to customise their own skills on the fly in combat. It's actually quite intuitive and easy to grasp how it works. Now nailing it is hard as all hell, but that is half the fun. That said Rogue has some of the best quest lines and Ninja is also quite enjoyable. You can start the job at lvl 10 in Limsa.

Dark Knight has an amazing story behind the job quest. My personal favourites are Gunbreaker for Tank which plays like a DPS. One of those rare players that like Monk. White Mage for Healer, enjoy the aesthetics also get a free mount at level 30. Ranged I like Machinist as least RNG based ranged job. And for caster my favourite is Summoner with its super long rotation and looking forward to the changes. Every job is viable in every bit of content and you can use the deep dungeon Palace of the Dead to see how they play at later levels.

Watching animations becomes very important in Savage or Extreme raids as those modes do not have telegraphs, and you need to determine the attack vector via the boss' attack animation.

I went thru MSQ as a healer main and by the time I got to Shadowbringer I took a break to level ninja. At that point I knew how the game worked so it was easier for me to pick up and understand positionsals, weaving oGCDs thru combos. And the likely reason they're tossed around tier lists is that they have a 15sec debuff (5% extra team damage to boss) called Trick Attack on a 60sec cooldown and a ninjas effectiveness is based on the consistency of its uptime. And that there's a good bit of damage lost on missed positionsals. But weaving ninja hand signs and shooting out ninjutsu feels awesome af. 10/10

Red Mage:-- Magical Zorro. You have a mixture of short cast and very long cast spells. However every second cast you do is instant, so your rotation becomes a dance of thinking a step ahead while also balancing your white & black magic energy. Some spells come from the Conjuration (white) line, while others come from the Thaumaturgy (black) line. Keep these forces in check and you can leap in to unleash an awesome melee finisher, slashing your initials into an enemy's pantaloon's before leaping back out to begin casting again. It plays very smoothly in practice rather than description, plus you have a combat rez! Bard: -- Dots and procs. If you like staying on your toes, this is a great ranged DPS that also provides good raid utility with various buffs. Dancer: -- A ranged DPS that focusses on procs. I got a slightly more ordered "enhancement shammy" vibe from Wrath/Cata. Great in groups, not quite so amazing solo Monk: -- This'll change a bit in End Walker, but a character that develops a very fast GCD while relying on positional combo'd through a "stance" system.. You'll be running between the flank and rear of the target like a mad man! Not a relaxing experience, but very satisfying if you want something very involved. Gunbreaker:-- This is the tank you want to play if you fancy also turning into a beyblade of explosive doom. Basically three DPS dressed in a trench coat, but still very well balanced. Paladin:-- Somewhat generic until higher levels, where it becomes an interesting dance between a Physical and Magical dps rotation. A fair few interesting tricks, including a decent heal. White Mage:-- Your generic "regrow some limbs!" style healing. Also some good AOE damage, plus a suite of instant cast spells as you advance in level.

i think the one thing i discovered that really changed my gameplay experience is knowing that you can adjust your camera tilt. Cause as a caster, with normal settings i always felt unconfortable, like i was too close to my own character to see anything arround me. Turns out you can adjust your view to have a wider perspective. That was such a game changer

To summarize Red Mage as quickly as possible: you have two meters, black magic and white magic, and you have two sets of spells: ones with fast cast times and ones with slow cast times. You job trait is Dualcast: every second spell you cast with a cast timer is instant. So you cast the short cast spells regularly, and Dualcast the long spells, alternating between white and black magic to build up both meters, and when they're both (mostly) full, you can spend the meter for a three combo melee strike. (and you don't need to worry about running to and from melee because you have a gap closer and a disengage as well) Several other mechanics get introduced as well, such as procs for higher damage spells and instants to weave. It's a really fantastic design.

You job trait is Dualcast: every second spell you cast with a cast timer is instant. Just to add on to this. It's after every hard-cast spell you get an dualcast proc that lets you instacast. So you cannot do shit like dualcast - > Swiftcast - >dualcast.

Another thing about the main city aetherytes, the huge ones you return to, those can also teleport you to the housing wards for grid/lim/ulh. Can be helpful if for some reason you need to get there or nearby there for some reason. You'll have to do a mini side quest to unlock it, they'll be the blue marker, but can be helpful.

And apologies for multiple comments, (except I think that helps promote the video, so hopefully that'll happen) but I mained Arcanist as well, save I went for the Scholar route. Do unlock the class, I've had a lot of fun with it, and healing is a nice change of pace to really switch up how you think about dungeons. Plus, it's free! Summoner and Scholar share levels and exp, and healers get instant queue times.

I saw that one of you was trying to learn to play on a controller. See if these tips help. Hold R2 + tap R1 or L1 to tab target Hold L1 + tap up/down on dpad to scroll the enemy list. When you need to turn in a quest item press square to immediately pull up the item they need. It's like shift clicking to turn in. Hope these help.

red mage is my absolute favorite class. here's the pitch: casting.... but FAST. after you cast a spell, your next spell is instant, so you can cast a really short spell and then instant cast a long, powerful spell while you run around then, once you cast enough spells, you can dash into the enemy, slash them with your sword, and backflip while instantly casting more huge spells!! if you want big explosions but hate standing in place and waiting for animations, red mage is the class for you (additionally, you can use that instant cast on a resurrection spell, so you can raise a party member every other gcd while still doing damage. you'll feel like a god when you save the party from a wipe)

Really pumped to see Garrett playing and enjoying FFXIV. I was skeptical when I first started playing - especially because it's so convoluted and the UI can be so obtuse for newbies - but it has become by far my favorite FF and my favorite MMO.

Okay, I'm just starting to binge your videos (hi, i'm new, thanks YT algo!~), but Ifrit doesn't jump from the moon, it's an eclipsed sun. Y'know, since he's a fire element primal, haha. (Apologies if this comes across too rough, I don't mean to be rude! ;; ) That said, I'm SO EXCITED to watch through your journey! Based on a lot of the comments here, it seems like you've really come to love the game, and as a lore lover of XIV, I'm super interested to listen to your thoughts on lore as you go along :D EDIT: Listening to the comments you picked out, and your discussion of the GCDs and oGCDs, just you both understanding that point puts you *lightyears* ahead of most newbies who pick this up. I had no concept of weaving until I was through late Stormblood back in 2019, and even then it didn't really *click* for me until post Shadowbringers, when I truly started into the on-level raiding scene. Granted, this was my first ever MMO, mostly due to financial restrictions, but it's thanks to friends I made who kept me afloat and gifted me game time that I was able to enjoy the game for so long, and now I can afford to not only keep myself subbed, but I can also pass it on and support other friends just starting! Anyway, sorry for rambling, it's brought up a lot of old memories about the game, loving this series so far!

Personally I love summoner as it's the most mobile caster as most of its spells are instant cast, you also get the scholar job as they share levels. So you can freely experience both heal and dps at the same time

My favorite role is melee DPS. My favorite job is dragoon. Some positionals, but not as positional-intensive as monk (monk's positionals will be a little bit streamlined in Endwalker), good DPS, not complicated, but a long dps-rotation at lvl 80. Its signature move, the Jump (oGCD ability), has the drawback of animation lock, so, if you poor-time a Jump, you can be the easy target of a enemy AoE. That's why they are meme'd as "floor tanks", and that's why you can't double-weave with dragoon without clipping your GCD's. But it is so much fun, and so badass.

Advice on jobs: Watch Larryzaur's video on jobs: Shadowbringers. Watch JoCat's Crap Guides to FFXIV - Tanks, Healers and DPS. All of these are REALLY good for getting an idea of what the different jobs do and feel like. RDM is very satisfying, flashy and just plain FUN. You get good damage, a GOOD heal and a rez as well as the whole melee aspect of the class, so think jack of all trades type thing.

Right now, my favorite jobs are: 1. Dancer (DNC) because it has an easy basic rotation for relaxing with in basic content, but you can also min-max the stuffing out of it in endgame. I also like it because it's one of the few support jobs in the game... But generally i like it because it's very chill. 2. Machinist (MCH) is a job I hated until the Shadowbringers changes to MCH. Now it's a fun pure DPS ranged job (it gets knocked for being "selfish," but all DPS is good DPS imo), and it has a fun burst window mechanic. Also, guns! 3. Warrior (WAR) for the Fell Cleave x 6 action. I'm tanking, but I'm also smacking the crap out of things with my giant axe. I channel my inner beast and be the barbarian i want to be. 4. Samurai (SAM) IS something you should try when you hit 50, because if you're going to play a weeb game, you gotta play a weeb job. Pure DPS, also gets a bad rap for being selfish in terms of not buffing other party members, but it's kinda fun in a cheesy way. I enjoy the sword draw techniques, but some people may not enjoy them. 5. Dark Knight (DRK) isn't one is my personal favorite jobs, but damn, you need to do that simply for the story of the job quests. And I will say no more. I think you need to be in Heavensward to unlock that one... I don't remember anymore. Otherwise, just try stuff and do the thing you like to do. The jobs in this game are so *ruthlessly* evenly balanced that it literally doesn't matter what job you play, only that you enjoy it.

So the way oGCDs work is that you can “weave” them between your GCDs. This is easier to see on tanks and non-magic dps since their attacks are instant cast. So when you press a button for an attack, you start the global cool down, oGCD abilities can be used in this window of time. For example: Dark Knight has an ability called Edge of Shadow (and an AoE version called flood of shadow) which is used to gain 30 seconds of the Darkside buff for a 10% damage buff. This is labeled as an ability and is an oGCD, so to use it, it’s best to use a GCD attack like Hard Slash, which starts your GCD spin, and while it’s still spinning, you hit the button to use Edge of Shadow to gain the buff. Then the GCD ends, you hit the button for siphon strike as the second part of the combo, and you use edge of shadow again during the GCD to extend your Darkside timer. Skill/spell speed affects how fast or slow your global cool down actually is, and at higher levels this starts to matter a lot. There are builds for Samurai that explicitly want as slow a global cool down as possible so you don’t have to have too many “filler” GCD button presses between your ability timers, while black mages explicitly need the fastest GCD possible as they have minimal oGCD abilities. Until Endwalker, Dark Knights want a very high skill speed so they could fit as many attacks as possible into their blood weapon buff window and as many Bloodspillers as possible in their Delirium window. Thankfully Endwalker is changing how those abilities work so now DRK can prioritize their damage and defensive stats.

Just to clarify the bit about not using the Suggested Gear button, that's really just for below level 50 gear (and as briefly mentioned some very specific extremely high end gated content). The Suggested Gear button works perfectly fine once you get into gear for beyond level 50 as at that point the itemization side of the game has been worked out and normalized. Don't "not use it" just don't use it in the early game (or if you do use it to fill slots just double check to make sure it filled it with the right items as it will still get it mostly right).

I started out as a paladin, but switched to Dragoon and love the job. Some of the characters you meet in the job quests will show up later in the game. You also get some cool lore stuff that's fun when you reach Heavenward. The dragoon rotation at higher levels isn't overly complex, but will keep you mashing buttons. Has some very cool jump animations and attacks as well. Have to be careful because some will animation lock you in place. If the boss does a quick telegraphed attack at the same time you may be get out of the way in time....hence the 'floor tank' label. Speaking of, outside the true tanks, you do have one of the highest health pools in the game. Currently going back to finish leveling my paladin and conjurer. Machinist and red mage intrigue me as well.

Redmage, also sometimes referred to as "Rezmage", is really popular in higher level new raid/dungeon runs since they get a rez at level 65 (I think). Their rotation gives them an instant cast ability called "dualcast" that allows the next spell to be instant cast. Since this is a recurring ability, it allows a redmage to instant cast multiple resurrections, just by casting some short cast time spell first. They also get a decent heal, though it's not as good as true healer's heals. Unfortunately, they are one of, if not the, lowest damage caster.

Sure, they're the lowest dmg cast if we look at the top parses. if we look at average parses RDM is higher. And even on top pharse, it's like 0.5%-1.5% difference.

pro tip.: you can use your chocoboas combat pet like a hunter in wow . it can tank/heal and dps depending on your taste/job.

I don't know if anyone has said this, but if you're a caster you should learn an master slide casting. It's when you're casting there is a small window at the end of your cast bar where you can move and it won't cancel the cast instead of waiting to fill all the way, it help increase dps and for dodging AoE. The best way to tell is when your cast bar is almost full, in that small window your other abilities will light up, that's when you can move after casting before the bar is full.

Like a lot of classes, Dragoon starts off pretty slow and the Lancer quest line is a little dull, but once you have a couple jump abilities it really picks up. And the Dragoon class story is an excellent lead in to Heavensward. Dragoons are important to the lore of that expansion, so there are a handful of unique story bits that acknowledge your role as a Dragoon. Plus, they look sick as hell!

Actually, I'll drop something here that I found incredibly useful. You know how the general window in chat provides lots of info that you may need in a lot of cases but sometimes chatting with other players can get drowned out? And that can really suck in some dungeons or trials when it comes to advice and or communication? You can create and costumize a total of 4 chat tabs (the default are 3 I believe) in the chatlog configurations. I for example have kept the general tab and made one tab that is reserved for players and one tab for only NPC dialogue. You can also drag one of the tabs away from the others and thereby have both displayed at the same time on your screen (I do not use that because my screen is to small but that can be neat I imagine). So if you want to have a cleaner seperation of text communication and stuff, definitely try that out and see what works for you.

Edgy tank with the big ass sword = Dark Knight (need to unlock Heavensward expansion and it starts at level 30). The job quest storyline is amazing and the rotation abilities are very fun for a tank class. Edgy melee class with big ass pointy stick = Lancer/Dragoon. The beginning seems a bit slow but once you unlock the "job" of Dragoon, the abilities really become enjoyable (leaping attacks, etc.). It also comes with its own memes being known as the floor tank since you can get animation locked and die to AEs quite easily. Enjoy!!

Good tip: if you get one class to max (80 in shb and 90 in ew) in a category, the other classes get an XP buff while leveling, so try and level each category to max (e.g. mdps, tank, healer, rdps, magic) not all grind together (e.g. all tanks to lvl50, etc) Coming from wow i still have a hard time with the GCD time. Most recently i was doing m+ with a disc priest with 1.3s GCD (20% haste) and now an astrologian with 2.35s GCD. It feels slow/sluggish to me as i am used to having all my skills up immediately (except for big GCDs like Rapture and Pain Suppression). Even on uh dk i need at least 25% haste for it to feel not sluggish

I started playing this game in February and have absolutely loved the time I've spent with it. The three jobs I've played and really, really enjoyed are Monk, Samurai, and Dancer. Pugilist / Monk was the class I came into the trial on, and incendentally it was the most complex melee DPS class to play as, specifically because the GCD is very short in comparison to other classes and because of the positionals (requiring you to hit an enemies flank for one attack, then their rear for the next, etc.) it requires to do max damage, you are constantly moving around enemies to keep that up. Because of those positionals Monk feels like it has a bit of a flow to it that you can get into and even get tripped up over, but it's very fun. Next I went Samurai. The rotations felt similar to Monk, but they're more focused on charging various gauges to do more, high powered oGCD abilities than Monk is. It has a flashy moveset, since you're using a katana, and some of the higher level actions feel really good to pop off. Finally, I went Dancer. This is probably the more unique of the three classes I've played. It has a focus on doing a dance buff at the beginning of engagements, to buff both you and eventually allies damage output. The moves here are also hella flashy, since you're doing a lot of spins and twirls while you're throwing your weapons, the chakram. The rotation for this class is very different too, as it's based a lot around procs and because of that has a fair bit of randomness to it, which I like as a bit of a change up in comparison to the rather rigid rotations of Monk and Samurai. I've tried Warrior and Red Mage as well, but didn't feel like I was having as much as I was than with the classes above. But, I've got plenty more classes to try too.

For me it's unlocking all the role jobs and then switch them while doing the msq that way you only need to worry about weapons and you can save on armoury space I did the melee dps and got 3 jobs to 55 before unlocking HW

Funny learning that I am on the same server as y'all from the mention of the dancing pope in Ul'dah. He never leaves that spot. I've played all jobs up to at least 30. Main is WAR 60 and I have a lot of fun with that. Honestly love all the tank role jobs. I enjoy NIN too because its got an extra level of complication with the ninjutsu. Getting close to the end of Heavensword story and still don't know which job I want to focus on cause I enjoy them all really.

I don't know about specific classes I'd clamor for you to try as everyone has their preference, but I'd definitely at least do one of each role. Without going into spoilers, there is a cutsscene in Shadowbringers you can unlock in the MSQ if you complete all the role quests once you've unlocked them before proceeding with the MSQ again. A lot of players were upset by this fact though because many didn't know this and they felt they were missing out on some cool story stuff as a result so YoshiP didn't repeat this in Endwalker role quests. I still did them all before finishing Endwalker though because I'm a completionist. 😂

Always forgotten....from HW on, collect the aetherite currents (using compass) and aether current side quests at the same time as doing the MSQ as they pretty much follow the MSQ trail through areas. By the end of the areas story you will have the ability to fly.

Ninja is my favorite class, and I haven't really heard any stigma against them other than the perception that it's a super difficult class to play. I'm here to tell you that it is both way easier then people think it is, and it has a really fun and satisfying gameplay loop. You have the class fantasy of being a speedy, dual wielding fighter with wide array of ranged magic attacks through their ninjutsu. They also tend to be really welcome in parties due to Trick Attack, which is a 5% vuln on the boss for 15 seconds on a 60s cooldown. Historically, class rotation theory crafting has been designed around maximizing burst in the TA window, though it's not as big of a deal as it once was due to other classes having 60s damage utility skills as well. You also just run faster than other classes as a passive and you can teleport around the battlefield. It feels very mobile and versatile.

Summoner is my main, I love the later summons and how things weave between the different summons, and BOI we're getting a crazy rework. And who doesn't love summoning primals!? But next to my main, I'm loving the heck outta gunbreaker for a tank because there's lots of big combos, big damage, many explosions and often memed as '3 DPS in a trenchcoat'.. Tho Warrior also is my 'unga bunga fel cleave go BRRRRR'. In the end, you can have every class on a single character, so try them all! One final tip, is no matter what job you choose, you'll always be dpsing~ Tanks? DPS with beeg hp, Healer? We jokingly call them 'green dps'. Especially white mage later on.. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD LILY! (Highly recommend JoCat's 'Crap Guide to FFXIV')

Finding you and coming to this video WAY late but for anyone finding it just now like me: food becomes much more important the more jobs you play. If you’re just playing 1 and doing the MSQ, foods a null factor cause MSQ gives XP hand over fist. But after you do the MSQ and can’t do anymore MSQ quests for XP, suddenly food becomes wayyyy more useful if you wanna try out new jobs

I enjoy quite a few jobs! Machinist became my main back in 2019 before I left till recently as I was left on my own and while I love tanking, I hate pug tanking when I don't know the instances and MCH is a blast (quite literally); very mobile while attacking, summons a mech at high level, and lots of firepower! Dancer is really good and more party friendly than MCH as you have some buffs to help out. The minigame for dance moves is far easier to do than I first thought, and the dash move is amazing in big fights to get out of AoEs, as long as you don't go too far! I like all 4 tanks a lot. Gunbreaker is my only 80 but the others are all 62-68. I was a warrior main than DK main back before GNB existed and I tanked for our little group, but all of them are enjoyable for me. GNB may be best if you really like DPS but want to tank, once you hit 70 that combo is so satisfying! I haven't healed much till recently as it's a different animal from EQ, WoW, or SWTOR. But Astrologian isn't bad if a bit difficult to get used too. Red Mage is one of my 80s (along with MCH, DNC, GNB, and some crafting and gathering jobs) and I really liked it at first but it feels a bit weird now and I hope the mana changes coming in Endwalker can smooth it back out again; from 50-70 it was really fun, just watch your disengagements so you don't land in the ouch or fly off the edge!

red mage you cast once get a instant cast build up black and white magic to jump into melee with a skill then do a melee combo followed by a jump back an if you are a hight enough lvl a big white or black magic attack and start all over again

After getting all to 80, here's my favorite jobs per role. Tank: Gunbreaker. The new tank. I've been raiding with this, and it is fast and well balanced. I'm slightly concerned about its changes in Endwalker, but still looking forward to playing it. What to expect: Fast, unique burst combo with continuation, while also having the same cool down and utility of other tanks. Healer: Astrologian is my go-to healer. It is changing in Endwalker to be a "Pure Healer" meaning it'll shed most of its shielding aspects of healing to it. What to expect: Offers damage up utility to the party and fast ways to get out fast healing. The card system has been vastly simplified and made to be able to be done at a quicker glance. Ranged DPS: Dancer. The new DPS job and it simple, but fun in a party. You basically follow the glowing lights has you hit your abilities and off damage reduction and damage buffs to the party. Caster DPS: Red Mage. Like Summoner it can raise in combat, but the dual cast allows you to get instant raises out numerous times. What to expect: Fast gameplay with Dual Cast, a small Melee Combo that leads into a big magic burst. Versatile with needing to stand still but also able to move on the instant cast spells. Incredibly fun and looking forward to it in Endwalker. Melee DPS: I'm very much looking forward to Reaper. But Monk right now is my absolute favorite. It is fast, but versatile between mixing up single target with multi-target abilities. What to expect: Positionals are the name of the game. Get your abilities setup in a way to easily identify Rear or Side. Endwalker will get rid of 2 positionals simplifying it a bit, but I don't see changing how I play at all. Monk is getting a fairly big Endwalker rework, but mostly will play the same as it does now. I just love the fast nature and how it makes me think about what I need to press next. Those are my thoughts on my current favorites for each role. I try to upload my groups raid videos. Paladin - Your survivability as a tank is insane. Often times you can carry a fight to the end when the whole rest of the party is dead to mechanics. Dancer - tons of fun, highly mobile. It's great for your first time in a fight because you can move so much. Great party utility too.

The XP-wall... Yes, I remember that. When I started last year you didnt get the great amounts of XP you get now - and the free trial was "only" till 35. Long story short, I hit that wall very often and had to do FATEs and stuff. Nowadays a lot of people level a second and third job simultanously, thats the amount of XP you get :D I never heard about Ninja being trashed on... on the contrary, they are welcome in every group setting because of Trickattack: it makes the entire party make more dmg to a boss for 14 seconds or so. Thats an enormous dmg buff - again, for the whole party. Another advantage you have with Ninja is that though they are a melee job they have the Mudra-system and their range attacks are really good. Plus, Ninja has a natural learning curve: you get your skills every couple of levels and they all add up. I found it quite "easy" to learn. As for the Mudras, its similar to a Memory game: you press them in a certain order to get specific spells, either a speed buff, a fire aoe, a lightning attack, or shuriken. Or, to quote Larryzaur, "you have to devote some extra braincells". Samurai is also a job that "flows" quite nicely. It has no party buffs but its personal dmg is the highest among all jobs (except Black Mage) - though that doesnt really count for anything. Unlike pretty much every other MMO out there, FF14s jobs are very well balanced and if your party members have all different jobs, you cant go wrong. Anyway, Samurai is straight forward and again, cant go wrong there. Dragoon. Also straight forward to learn, but watch out when you do your jump attacks: you enter a short animation lock and Dragoons are called "floor tanks" for a reason. Other than that, they too have a party buff (higher crit), they have (mostly) the best job armor and when you play through Heavensward, being a Dragoon is almost mandatory ;) Monk. If you want to struggle, this is the job for you: everything is fine, until you get "Perfect Balance" at lvl50 (you're going to hate this skill... at least until Endwalker, so never mind :D ). And its the job with the most positionals. Positionals are requirements for your skills to hit harder, all melee jobs have positionals but every of the other jobs have only 2 or 3 position requirements while Monks GCD attacks are ALL position bound. In short: you have to dance a lot. And pray that your tank doesnt move the boss around. Other than that, its super fun to play and once you got the hang of it, its super rewarding. Oh, and it has two party buffs: one that aids your healers and one that increases party dmg, so if you master a Monk, every party will love you :) Red Mage (and then I'll stop) builds up black and white mana and once it hits the threshold for both you nyoom in and do you 3part melee combo - you're like a magic Zorro (you even get the Z-slash attack!). Then you backflip out of melee range to safety (be super careful where you backflip to otherwise you just become another floor tank like Dragoon), finish off with one, later two super hitting instant casts and resume building your black and white mana again. With Endwalker you get a thirt instant finisher and it seems you dont have to build up as much mana as we do now - meaning, you'll be a melee mage much more often (at the moment, only about a forth of your time is spend as a melee). Its a super fun job, also big at party support (you can raise people instantly thanks to Dual Cast: every second spell is instant!) and with high mobility. You cant do anything wrong there. ... Actually, you cant go wrong with any job come to think of it... Pick what you like and stick to it :)

I started playing summoner, then picked up red mage and absolutely loved it. I thought it was easy to learn and it taught me a lot about how jobs work generally in the game. Plus it's f a n c y. Now maining machinist because of how crazy fast paced it is - it's just a joy to be constantly shooting ridiculous weapons and being able to move as much as you please. And we have a mech and a blight thrower so that's neat. If you just follow the msq you can level at least two jobs simultaneously which makes it easy to browse. Enjoy the game!

Area attacks that "paint" a zone, like those big orange cones/circles effectively "snapshot" who is going to be hit the second the attack finishes channeling, or in the case of non-cast attacks, the second the telegraph disappears. Don't matter how far you are from that area when the animation plays, if you were in it when the ability finished charging, you're getting hit. Second, the issue with MSQ progression for Job Quests is something ONLY Summoner has to deal with, unless your quest objective is in an area you can't access (basically, once you're in HVW and SB you might not have access to the zone you need to visit in order to complete your quest if you don't progress in the story, but that doesn't come up at all for anyone else in ARR, just Summoners). Third, it's not Ninja that get meme'd on, it's Dragoons. They're called floor tanks, and really, if someone is going to die like a jester, it'll be a Dragoon lol Though Red Mages are known to backflip off any ledge you allow people to fall from, and it's their God-given right XD

So about the overlevelling thing: The MSQ is in a bit of a weird position, XP balance wise. Doing MSQ is actually more than the XP required to completely max out one job, however, it is not enough to max out two jobs. Something you can do is start to consider is if you want to start learning a secondary job and balancing out XP that way (such as doing MSQ on your main, but throwing some roulettes at your secondary), but you have to play it a bit by ear in case you put too much XP in your secondary job that you accidently level gate your main for MSQ progression. (This is also why I suspect so many people want you to max out XP right now, in case you run into this issue for secondaries). Of course, given that a lot of classes have different level starting points, this will also lead to some weird XP differentials here or there. Dark Knight, Astrologians, and Machinists are especially disadvantaged here, because you can't unlock them until you reach the Heavensward city (requiring more than level 50 as prereq), but only start at level 30 themselves. As a newer player myself, I barely got enough to max out two jobs by the time I finished out the base Shadowbringers campaign, but this was because both of my chosen jobs were level 60 starters (Gunbreaker and Dancer), so this meant I had a bit of an XP lead for my secondary.

Animations still matter. Lower levels its teaching you how to recognize that animation and what it does so when it does Animation based attack with no circle/line/cone in end game you just naturally do the motion.

Dark Knight is absolutely the best of the class quests, it's worth playing just for that story. Personally, I main Dragoon because the rotation feels so nice and smooth to me. Dragoon's reputation of "floor tank" comes from the fact that our jumps put us in an animation lock that can cause us to get hit by abilities when we think we're safe, or that move us in ways we didn't expect. Also, the backflip has caused more than one dragoon to flip clean off the edge of a fight arena. I also really enjoy Bard, but that's because I'm a masochist who likes keeping track of DoTs and procs. Red Mage is probably the easiest caster to get into, it's a mix of casting and melee DPS, with an interesting rhythm to its abilities. They have a trait called "Doublecast" that causes the next spell you cast to be instant, and their spells have different cast times. The idea is you want to cast a spell with a fast cast time and then use one of the really slow, hard-hitting spells with the Doublecast buff to make it instant, while balancing the use of Black and White magic to make sure you stay in balance. Once you've built up enough meter, you charge into melee mode and use your rapier to deal a bunch of melee damage before jumping back out to start casting again.

Glad you guys are playing and creating content for FFXIV :) Definitely the cutest content creators in this space right now, though only Xeno’s beard is really even in that competition with ya. Samurai is a great melee job, lots of fun to play and highest damage, I always choose them for my dance partners.

You should have your next job quest as your recommended quest on the MSQ guide! \o There's usually a smaller quest title beneath the MSQ one, and if your current job quest is unlocked that's usually what it recommends. LOL I've been playing the game since HW launched and I only just this year learned about the aetheryte tickets for Vesper Bay, and what legacy controls meant for me as a controller player, AND I just learned about the target toggle trick on controller. There's always something new for us to learn. \o For Red Mage: It's a really fun playstyle! It's not too dissimilar from Dancer in that it's slightly Proc based (though Dancer is almost entirely Proc based). - I enjoyed it because it's an EXCELLENT support class, a nice balance between the utility of a SMN with it's healing and raising spells combined with dualcast (hard/slow casting one spell and then swift casting whatever spell follows, like Raise), and offensive classes. - You aren't really going to see DPS numbers like straight up DPS classes (Black Mage, Monk, Samurai), but the added support you can give to your team, especially your healers, while progging high level content is pretty sweet. - The glamours and pose swag (vpose and bstance) are also pretty friggin sweet.

My Feisty Little Chocobo, its a lv 30 quest. Please do it. I dont know if anybody mentioned it, but please help yourself with a battle companion that can heal you in the overworld while you are solo questing.

My main is White Mage a healer job easy to pick up and learn healing on, very straight forward healer but so satisfying to play. My second favorite job is Bard, very satisfying to play on high level and not that difficult to pick up very mobile which helps avoid aoes 😁. And with Bard you get cool performance feature so you can play instruments 🎸.

Play what you're curious about and if you like them, keep playing them. That's the beauty of the game: being able to play whatever you want on the same character. All the jobs are good. For jobs that are introduced in expansions, you will not start them at level 1. So for Red Mage, Samurai, Gunbreaker, Dancer, Astrologian, Dark Knight, and Machinist, you're going to get a ton of skills/abilities thrown at you when you unlock them. Personally, I

I have been sticking with it. Finding Samurai kind of cool, but I just love the absurd spell effects of Summoner. It's completely unlike what I usually play in WoW (or even SWTOR way back when).

I think I mention it here, that I went and did the starter quest for Scholar. Haven't messed with it much beyond getting it started and getting my soul crystal.

Both Gshade and ACT are not gonna be enforced as bannable offense, exception being if you as example stream and use ACT parsing to shame players ( happened a couple times to streamers ). You can use it to your heart's content without worrying as long as you are not a dick about it basically. TIP : if you stream the parsing overlay is not visible through "Game capture" in OBS and you'd need to add it externally as "Browser Source" if you want viewers to see it ( you can basically have it as overlay for you and not the viewers to avoid uncomfortable situation ), a small tip i learnt using it for 9 years.

DPS Meters kinda fall into the same category that Gshade does, if you use it to be helpful it gets a pass, the second a DPS meter is used to hurt another persons gameplay is when it becomes bannable.

I would say try Ninja. It's fun and I like the idea of having to use a ninjitsu that you craft with your other abilities to fit the situation. As for Red mage you won't be able to unlock that for a fair bit if I remember correctly. One other thing. I have been playing the game for 6 years, I couldn't tell you the name of just about any paladin ability (my main). I just know pictures and buttons
