Doug, Thanks for this video. I just moved the sensor and it fixed an issue I had when the trolling motor was stowed. Thanks! :)

Great video. I learned some extra things on what to do before install from this. Another thing you can test is trimming up and down and see if it will deflect the compass. Something I have found out after final installation on mine.

+masterlocdown I'm not as concerned with a Trim Motor because it's momentary change in creating Magnetic Interference unless it's all the time. I can tell you one thing that drove me crazy when testing is having a drill or electric screwdriver close to the heading sensor while trying to locate the best location will cause Magnetic Interference...move the drill and boom...it worked as design. :)
@MasterLocdown8 жыл бұрын
Doug Vahrenberg mine would take up to like 20 seconds afterwards to point correctly after trimming while under way. It would be almost out of adjustment range after bumping the trim.
@DougVahrenberg8 жыл бұрын
+masterlocdown Is this the Boat ICON or Course Project Line. Two different components on the ONIX. You need to watch the Boat ICON for immediate readings and Course Projection Line is a calculated reading of how the boat is travelling not direction the boat is pointing.
@MasterLocdown8 жыл бұрын
Doug Vahrenberg The heading line on mine will jump after trimming the motor. Course line stays true.

Good Morning Sr. I could use it as gps ie in a navigation software on my PC ??? Because I have navigation software and I just want to use it as a GPS signal for the letter understand. Type could be used by entering USB into my PC to transmit GPS signal to the navigation software on my PC. Thanks for your feedback and finally get this GPS.

This is all good , but when you start the engine and all cables become alive - that is where interference is coming from. Any electric flow through the conductor creates magnetic field. Also compass deviation can be created just by being close to metal or steel object ( engine). Putting it on the short pole would be a better job ......
@DougVahrenberg6 жыл бұрын
I'd test before and after engine is running. Personally I now temporary mount with Velcro or double stick tape before permanent mounting

Great tip Doug, Question I have a flats boat with a poling platform can I install on the top of the poling platform center... Thanks
@DougVahrenberg6 жыл бұрын
Yes you could. The Only thing that I would test first is the pitch & roll in waves. The higher you mount the more effect it will have on GP Position location as the platform will move more distance in waves.

Doug would you recommend having two GPS pucks one on the Bow and one on the Transom. Transom GPS for console Mounted finder and any other Finder connected in the rear of the boat..Example I have a multi-species and have console mounted, bow mounted and splashwell mounted birds. The console and the splashwell share data when I have the splashwell unit connected. I troll for Salmon and trout along with stripe bass. When fishing from my cast deck I use only the Bow and console units and have thought of putting GPS puck at the bow for heading control of my minn kota..
@DougVahrenberg6 жыл бұрын
I use a external GPS on the transom for my console unit because of the distance. On the Bow I use the Internal Receiver.

Doug Vahrenberg I was told that you cannot share GPS with each other on the Helix G3N. I was told that for precise GPS waypoint marking, i needed to connect a puck with heading sensor to each unit. I was also told that i needed a hub to do so. Basically, i am connecting 2 Helix 12 g3n’s and a Ultrex with built in mega DI. I have an Ethernet hub and have ordered 2 pucks with heading sensors. I don’t know if I’m getting bad info or not. Please help sir! Thanks for Tip’s and Tricks!! Keep it up!

Hi Doug. How does the heading sensor sync up to the bow mount 360. Does it automatically sync when it’s networked in? Thanks
@skwira0008 жыл бұрын
Doug, does this add any benefit if you have I-Pilot Link. I can see it if it's just strictly Humminbird, but is there a benefit since the I-Pilot Link system also has a compass. (It says in the I-Pilot Link manual that the system itself has a compass).
@DougVahrenberg8 жыл бұрын
IT improves the accuracy and heading direction for the Humminbird and where you are in relation to your waypoints as you are viewing on the Graph

So will it make the spot lock on my legacy I-pilot link more accurate, when used with a humminbird?
@DougVahrenberg6 жыл бұрын
That is part of the MinnKota iPilot System. You would need the New iPilot System with it's own Heading Sensor for that.

Doug do you have any heading sensors for 360 transom Mount. I bought unit from a guy in Warsaw but said it was all there but no sensor. I’m going to hook to my helix 12. After reading install guild I’m sure it needs one but guy said he didn’t use one? Can that be true?
@DougVahrenberg6 жыл бұрын
I don't have one. It's GPS-HS from Humminbird. You don't have to have it but if you want to view waypoints and create accurate waypoints on 360 it's needed.
@westernhunter16488 жыл бұрын
It calculates your heading in real time through that obviously. Also, doesnt it calculate where the nose of the boat is based on the integrated GPS of your I-pilot trolling motor? So what is the point?
@DougVahrenberg8 жыл бұрын
+WESTERN HUNTER Standard GPS Receivers only can determine direction by movement when above 1 mph. At slow speed below 1 mph standard GPS receivers cannot 100% accurately tell which direction the boat is moving or pointed. That is where the Heading Sensor with Electric Compass adds more precision and helps GPS determine the exact location and direction the boat is. It's an optional upgrade for those that need more precision when slow speed navigating.

Is it possible to connect the AS-GRP-HS direct to the Helix 12 G2N unit? Or do I have to go thru NMEA 2K to get it connected?

So I just purchased a used 1197 and I am confused about the sensor for it and need your help. My sensor looks the same but does not have the arrow on it. However when I place the 1197 on a navigation screen it will tell me the direction I'm going and show a line. So how do I know which way to install the sensor? I looked through the product manual online and it doesn't tell me anything other than how to install it as in through the deck, on top of deck etc. also do you recommend true north or magnetic north in the settings? I have never had a GPS fish finder before and now I have two (the 1197 and 787).
@DougVahrenberg5 жыл бұрын
If it is the original transducer is does not have Heading Sensor so you can install any directions. What is the model printed on your GPS Receiver? If not GPS-HS then you can install any direction.

I'm not 100% sure since I have not tried that. I would call Humminbird 800-633-1468 they will know the answer. There has been some change in product over the years and can't answer that question for sure.

I'm confused on why you would need this since there is a built in GPS in the humminbird itself?

Doug can you tell me the purpose of having a heading sensor when your unit already has gps ?
@DougVahrenberg8 жыл бұрын
When moving less than 3mph and GPS receiver starts losing the ability to determine direction of travel. A Heading Sensor at slow speed works in conjunction with the GPS Receive to help predict much mroe accurately location and direction of travel. GPS-HS is a dual component unit that has GPS Receiver and Heading Sensor...it;s the ultimate tool for slow speed location

Please explain the difference between the heading sensor and the gps sensor on the onix units. Is there a separate gps sensor installed at the bow for the bow unit so as not to have a 20ft error on the bow gps waypoints if you install the heading compass at the back of the boat?
@DougVahrenberg8 жыл бұрын
+Ron Knight The Bow ONIX I am using the Internal GPS ...it's close to the transducer location. With ONIX you can subscribe to Heading Sensor separately from GPS Location Data. I choose the Internal GPS or use AS-GPR is an external that can be mounted to ONIX. But you only need one Heading Sensor for the boat.
@MasterLocdown8 жыл бұрын
The heading sensor will always point the same direction as the boat. If you're drifting sideways, your course won't be the same as your heading.
@ronknight64008 жыл бұрын
+Doug Vahrenberg Thanks Doug for the quick reply....about to upgrade to the Onix units from my 1198s.
@ronknight64008 жыл бұрын
+Ron Knight For the console unit, do you also use internal gps or does its gps come from the heading sensor?
@DougVahrenberg8 жыл бұрын
+Ron Knight For the Console I subscribe to the GPS Location Data and Heading Sensor Data from the GPS-HS. This will reduce adding any offset to sonar data with the GPS Location since the transducer and GPS Location Data are coming from close proximity.
