Great video and great book by Mark Baker ! Thanks for doing a synopsis of his chapter about timing ;)

Nice explanation and illustrations. I have been struggling with my timing since returning after many years away. Watching video of my practice. Even though it is a back shot and not from the side, when I started watching in slow motion I realized that my swing is way too early and I seldom get my slide foot in sync with my swing as a result. Now I have a better idea of what to work on. Thanks!

Great video. When I get the push away started correctly, timing seems to take care of itself, as long as I let the ball fall in the forward swing. It only took three bowling coaches to convince me that I was starting my push away too late. Now I'm off to practice . . .

Art, this is a great video and I highly recommend Mark Baker's book for anybody that is serious about improving their game. After reading it, working with my coach and altering my timing to match this approach my average has improved from 175 to 225. My league average hasn't caught up quite yet but it will with time. I appreciate your videos. They are very helpful for my team.

Robert Thank you for the kind words. I was astonished myself when I did the research on this. I thought I had very late timing but whenever I adjusted i would pull everything my extreme late timing was because I dont slide. People slide different distances and this made me look late. In fact if anything my timing was early. Bowler after bowler this was the case young old all the good ones had this in common.

@@ArtOfBowling yeah my timing was late, but now it is spot on. I'm actually working at getting my level 1 certificate so I can take a bronze level class with Karen Pullman, our gold certified coach for Utah. My son has been coached by her for the last 2 seasons and has gone from not being able to break 100 to averaging about 180 after only 1.5 years in the sport. He loves it. Thanks for your videos.

Great video Art! I'm getting back into bowling after about 35 years and figuring out how to time my approach is turning out to be tough. My question relates to having a slight bend in my elbow so I can stay behind the ball better. Should I keep my arm relaxed throughout the swing then bend it slightly only as I approach the release point? It seems logical to me that having a relaxed swing and straight arm through most of the approach will help repeatability. I feel if I keep a bent elbow all the way through the swing, the motion and height will be impeded. Also, I just ordered Mark's book.

Wow, this is really good. But I just went back and watched the video of the last ball of my first 300 I shot last summer. My arm is already below parallel by the time I start my slide. I think it's because I push the ball away on my first step of my 5 step approach?
@ArtOfBowling
@ArtOfBowling 5 жыл бұрын
That would make your timing early. Doesnt mean we cant hzve good games on ideal conditions. A lot you wont get away with in tougher conditions.

Mike Nelli in Bakers book, his suggestion would be to speed up you feet so you get to line faster. Arm swing stays the same, but slide starts sooner (with quicker feet).

we do a different kind of bowling in massachusetts called candlepin bowling. it's sort of like duckpin bowling. the normal approach is 3 step for most and it's kind of quick. but i'm gonna try working on this, i think it should help. timing seems to be a huge part of success in the game cause when you're on you're on and when you're off you're off. so even though our games are a bit different i figure bowling is bowling is bowling.

Steve Ive tried candlepin bowling a couple of times wish we had it down here what a blast it is. Very challanging I would like to challange all of our 10 pin bowlers to try candlepin at least once in there lives. If I lived in NE that might have been my sport!

@@ArtOfBowling yes, the lanes we play on are 60' and hard maple all the way and the ball kinda skids most of the way. the pins are 12" apart and the balls are 4.5" and weigh about 2.3 lbs. the pro avg. is between 118-130. i'm a league bowler and it's a difficult game but always trying to improve and gonna try your idea at my next practice session. our only problem over the last 25 to 30 years is the sport is disappearing cause the young people have too much else to do and the bowling alleys are sittin on prime real estate that's being turned into strip malls and the like. the league i'm in is mostly old guys and we're losing teams. good bowling to ya!

My back swing doesn't go that high. What do you suggest to do to get that perfect timing? 🤔

Letting the arm swing freely will help with the lenghth of your swing remember to let the weight of the ball move the shoulder not the shoulder swing the ball. The swing trainer from elieens bowling buddies is a great tool to help you in rease the length of you back swing. Remember to use the coupom code aob to get your 5% off

Bowled for many years in my childhood, but didn't really have a proper approach. Coaches tried to get me to do 4,5 but i just didn't have the coordination, I couldn't move my feet in time so I just gave up and did my own thing. Average never really went above 150-160 but had fun with it. Probably can't do it now cause my legs are in rough shape

corre t timing is about strating your arms and legs together in a 4 step approach five steps we wait three we start before we step....I would try it again...right leg and arm start together

Try to make sure you are using the ball to swing the shoulder and not the shoulder swinging the ball to free up that swing.

Hi Art. Thank you so much for posting this. It's really eye-opening to see how this applies to nearly all of the top level bowlers as well as amateurs alike. One of my favorite bowlers to watch, Mitch Hupe, has the smoothest approach and release that I've ever witnessed. His arm is actually below parallel at the point of his last slide step. Would it be bad to have the ball already to this point or considered early? Or is this because of the timing of his steps as he seems to have a way longer slide than the majority of bowlers. The slow motion video below really demonstrates this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqW5dYmBrtd0lck From the majority of the videos I watch, it almost looks like parallel to the ground is slightly late timing and forces you to muscle the last bit of the swing and lift through the ball, instead of being able to cock and uncock the wrist to impart more revs at the last moment while keeping the ball still close to your slide leg ankle. I would love to hear your opinion on this as it's always fun to pick the minds of great bowlers. Thanks again!
