Great vid. Advice: need to discuss the psychology of panic and endeavor. From many many personal experiences, I panic (foreign country, lost in woods/forests) and get lost more. My endeavors: psychology to think I can push forward and find the correct path direction when I should admit I'm lost and easily turn back/retrace steps. Psychology tends to self-sabatoge in my experience. In a foreign country, usually not life or death but in the woods, it is. I'm a merchant mariner too. Bravo zulu shipmate!

Good stuff. I recently retired and am planning on hiking many of the National Parks. I was smart enough to realize: I could get lost. So now looking at compasses. Anyway, what I really liked from what you discussed was "fixes". If you don't know where you are, you'll never know how to get back. Also, you mentioned "DR". Time, distance, heading.

Very informative! I know nothing about navigating so this is great for beginners

Thank you so very much! I was training for Spartan races (obstacle course racing, on mountains) and realized I really needed to master the mountain hikes. No one in my surroundings likes to do that, so I hiked alone, all the time (from Montreal, Canada, so only about 2 hours to Lake Placid and all the Adirondack peaks etc). I always went slightly off course and didn't even know there were markers on the trees (true novice). On my last hike (I am not prepared to go in the snow, so will only be able to "get back on the horse" in the Spring), I got lost. Very lost. Sunset was one hour away and I was truly lucky to have cell reception, when I realized there were all trees, all around me, for miles. I called 9-1-1 (felt horrible about it, but absolutely needed the help). They pinged me (followed my cell phone blips on a map) and walked me off the mountain. You see, on a mountain, you may be climbing, or going down, but have slight hills, as you walk. So, you're never 100% sure whether you're going up or down. I was so grateful for that live voice from the police.
