We love to eat. That is, hopefully, pretty clear by now. After living in Japan for over three years now, we finally feel confident to share some of our foodie tips about how to eat in Japan, like a local.
What are the sites you need to go to? How can you find good eats around town? What is LO? And what's the deal with flipping your sushi? Yeah. We've also seen a bunch of really bad advice online about eating in Japan, especially when it comes to Sushi, so today we're going to dispel those SUSHIII MYYYTHHSSSSSSS~

Like you told in the last minute, you are without doubt the greatest documentary video maker about Japan ever. Even major foreign tv broadcaster or famous foreign filmmakers could never have catch even any sight of your backs in the marathon race in making documentaries in Japan. They just follow boring stereotypes foreigners have about Japan and even when they digged deep, but they ended up in swimming in a pool of 5 cm depth. I am sure that living in the residental hood in Kichijoji, brought you the ordinary Japanese lives including foods. 1/3 of Tokyo ant the the other 1/3 of Tokyo are Musashino area and Tama area. Unless you do not know these two areas for living , you would not come to know Tokyo. Shinjuku, Harajuku or Akihabara do not represent it. Simon and Martina’s videos are the closest ever online to the real Japanese food lifestyles. To those who plan to come to Japan. Most of Japan trip videos on youtube go to the same restaurants. Instead, do as Simon and Martina are advising here!!

Could you guys please do a video of some basic food ordering and phrases when dining out, as well as a general how to when navigating small mom and pop restaurants? I’m secretly afraid to enter smaller establishments for fear of being out of place, not knowing how to navigate some of these smaller spots when it comes to when to order and settle up because of my remedial grasp on speaking Japanese!

A couple of myths there I've not heard of. That turning your sushi upside down so the fish touches your tongue first, is a real doozie... probably the most ridiculous myth I've heard so far!

I hadn’t heard that one either, but I bet it’s an offshoot of “you must dip the fish side down in the soy sauce” rule I have heard many times. I could never make it happen with chopsticks...

1. Never underestimate the power of convenience store onigiri- that's some good shizzle right there! 2. As was said, set menu (especially at lunch) is the way forward. Generally very reasonably priced but you'll be stuffed. 3. In summer, find 麦茶 (mugi cha / barley tea). Most refreshing cold beverage (one of the things I'm most excited about going back to Japan this summer). 4. In train stations or shopping centres, head to the top floor, there's LOADS of generally very decent restaurants up there 5. Just do it- go in, even if you have no idea what it is. Chances are it's going to be fab. 6. All you can eat is called "Viking". Why? Not sure.

Eating out in Japan can be expensive, so when I first lived in Tokyo making peanuts I LIVED for the lunch set. Generally, a ton of food for 1000-1500. That would keep me pretty full so I could eat at the konbini for dinner 🤣 Can't wait to go back to Japan now that I eat meat and make decent money.

YAY! I'm never this early! I had an awful pain night where I just could not sleep, but I finally got an hour or two in because I was able to drift off in the early morning while listening to your podcasts on repeat. Thanks for everything you do, guise!!

I'm sure sometimes he feels a bit cooped up when taking care of Martina. Simon is a growing boy with a lot of energy. He needs to get outside.

+1 for talking to the locals. My friends and I were visiting Japan last October, and one of the best experiences we had was when we had a chat with an older couple sitting next to us at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. They were very friendly, and even bought my brother a drink.
