Two sharp pipe wrenches make the job much smoother. A crescent wrench is really useful for the brass fittings. You’re always working in tight places, so there’s a lot of techniques on how to plan out your work so you can get the job done. Plumbing is kind of a creative process. Sometimes even the best of plans will take a turn in a better way.

I love how you sloppily apply the pipe joint compound so that you get it inside the pipe, eventually making it inside of the gas valve and/or orifice of the heater so that you get a return service call. Great idea for increasing one's business! Thanks for this - I had never thought about it!

Note to self; don’t take piping advice from a gas fitter who runs his piping right in front of a pressure/temperature gauge, applies pipe dope with his finger, uses a pipe wrench with a sales tag still attached and runs a flex connector inside of a wall. Just my 2 cents.

His way now my way . If he was giving tip then my tip is gas line valve handle should turn into “off” position . This way the crescent wrench has more clearance to grip and turn. He also can assemble the whole line including valve and turn to tighten to save time . Why drill thru the stud when you can add steel clamp and attach to outside of the stub . This way for more space to turn the fitting .

Wow! What an awesome video! First, production value. Your shots are all in sharp focus, tight enough to see exactly what is going on yet wide enough to orient us well so we have context. I really like your voice over, too. By shooting first and doing the voiceover to the video we get a consistent narration explaining the shot and keeping us ready for the next nugget of information. The information you shared was probably better than spending two weeks on the job. You did everything in the order we would be doing them, so unlike Pulp Fiction, we have a logical progression of how we'll be doing our own installations. You knocked it out of the park, and I really appreciate it. The knowledge you shared has given me the confidence to do my own little installation. You are why KZbin exists. PS: Here's a quote from Mark Twain's letter to the Hartford (Connecticut) gas company. Off the subject a little, but typically humorous as Twain's writings usually were: Dear Sirs: "Some day you will move me to the verge of irritation by your chuckle-headed G-damned fashion of shutting your G-damned gas off without giving any notice to your G-damned parishioners. Several times you have come within an ace of smothering half of this household in their beds and blowing up the other half by this idiotic, not to say criminal, custom of yours. And it has happened again to-day. Haven’t you a telephone?" - Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)

Good information to help a homeowner to understand the process, but may not be a DIY project. Check with your city, county, state, province...etc. before attempting any work on your gas lines. In my province ( in Canada) gas lines can ONLY be worked on by certified professional gas fitters that are accredited by TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Association). Besides the issues of safety and the heavy fines involved, your homeowner's insurance policy will be null and void (unable to obtain home insurance from any insurance provider in the future) if your handywork is discovered or if damage occurs as a result.

Hack. Never ever ever let your pipe wrench bite down and tighten on the threads. No mechanical devices (whips, unions, etc..) inside of a closed wall. Never put pipe dope any closer that 1 to 2 threads from the end of the pipe let alone inside it especially if your not installing a drip leg to catch all of that pipe dope in once it hardens and breaks free. Depending on the pressure your device with have a blockage due to this. I guess you got the job done. Live and learn and saved yourself money and disnt have to pay someone like me to do it

Is it possible to have black pipe all the way to the heater? That is, if the heater never had to be moved? Does this heater have a chimney or an outside vent? I would like a heater like that in the garage but I don't like the idea of no outside vent (and possible carbon monoxide).

Does that rule only apply to closed walls? The video’s creator installed the heater on an open frame wall. Furthermore, our gas log fireplace has a flex line that runs from the basement below. Don't tighten across a fitting or valve. Placing torque across the fitting can ruin valves. Always use a second wrench for back up and ensure the wrench is equal in size or greater than your driving wrench. This will allow for greater control of your fitting alignment and tighter final connections. This is imperative for larger pipe sizes. An inch of pipe shoulder should be visible when penetrating through a surface (minimum) such as a stud. An appliance connector should not be concealed. The first 2 male starter threads should also be bare and free of dope to prevent contamination of the piping internals. Exterior gas piping should be painted. Your wrench usage, layout, and general sequence of operation indicates a lack of experience. It didn't leak though.
