I agree 100% with all of these but the biggest one that helped me was coming out of auto mode! Once I learned what each thing changed about my exposure and how it would effect the image, I forced myself to use manual mode and never went back!!

Really enjoying the videos and great tips. I’m a novice in photography and only been out 4 times this year taking photos, and enjoying the journey. I’ve basically went straight into manual mode and raw. I’ve noticed the difference in this sort space of time how far I’ve come. And what the school of photography videos in the last few days has done, has helped me understand a little more about photography. Thank you

great video, thanks for taking the time! i'd love to see a video formatted like this for a bit more advanced photographers. i'm in my second year and i've noticed that my focus has shifted from learning the technical side of using my camera to how i want to present my art in my "style". I'd be very interested to hear others speak about their tips for second or third year. thanks!

All new comers and not so new should get your book which is put together in a easy constructive way and even though we might have been involved in photography for some time we sometimes get stuck in our ways so it’s good to get back to the basics at times, I have not been active myself for a while because of health problems but hopefully to get back into it soon.

Great tips Marc even for a seasoned photographer like me, It's all to easy to turn the dial to auto and shoot away, I sometimes force myself to get my Pentax K 1000 out and go back to basics, fully manual and no review screen.

If there are any beginners out there. Do hesitate and do the TSOP course. Its fantastic. I made the mistakes Marc has said above. But now gone to basics. Im learning so much better. You can take your time, if it takes you longer on 1 thing. It doesnt matter. Take your time and it will finally click. Saying that Photography you are always learning. So please go and follow TSOP. Its well worth the money

I'm in my 3rd year of photography, and still feel that my photos are... Well sometimes they are good, but most times they are terrible. I struggle with consistency. But I appreciate it when I watch videos like this where I'm encouraged to allow myself to learn from my mistakes. I'm getting better; it's gradual; but I'm OK with that.

Great videos - great tips - 3 weeks into my photography journey and loving it, because I did the beginners course, I keep going back to it, recapping and practicing ~ my pictures aren’t the best in the world, but for me they’re incredible as I don’t use Auto at all. I look at the pictures and try and analyse what’s wrong with them and, just sometimes, what’s good about them! What would be great would be to have some feedback on them. “That’s a decent shot you’ve got the lighting right, but if you’d done .................. it may have improved the composition” kind of feedback. Not sure whether you offer this or whether I’d be brave enough to show you my shots!!😀 I have asked for and received answers to my questions though as I’ve been learning - great support! My husband sat listening to one of the tutorials and his comment was “You’ve found a little gem there”! Great news as he paid for the course. Thanks Marc

Hi Marc and Faye, just watched this excellent video; trust you and families are all well be healthy in these exceptional times. I fully agree with all your tips, and I would like to add one which really helped me. Purchase a "Dummies guide for your specific camera" where available (newer cameras may not be supported yet). The user manual that comes with the camera in many cases leaves you totally lost and overwhelmed. The "Dummies guide" explains each control on your camera, who to use it and what effect it had on your photography, also it's a permanent reference source to use. Marc how much does it cost to join your school, I live in Northern Ireland. Again stay well and safe.

Hi Marc, thank you for your comments, I purchased your ebook Complete Guide to Photography (May 2020), I'm currently reading through it for the first time(not doing the tasks yet; will read it again doing the tasks). My will join your online courses in July 2020, as I want to be able to reproduce my images on a consistent basis, which requires tuition. I currently have the following equipment: Canon EOS 500D (over 7 yrs old) with the battery grip and glass screen protector fitted 500D for Dummies (Jul 2019) Canon EOS 80D (Jan2020) with battery grip and glass screen protector fitted 80D for Dummies (SEP 2019) Canon 430 EX ii (over 7 yrs old, for 500D) Canon 580 EX ii (SEP 2019) Brewer twin ok 6"x5" flash defuser (Aug 2029) 18-55mm kit lens (7 yrs old with 500D) 55-250mm lens (7 yrs old for 500D) 18-135mm (Jul 2019) for 80D 24-105mm f4L (Jul 2019) 50mm f1.8 (Jul 2019) 85mm f1.8 (Aug 2019) All lenses fitted with UV filter (protective) and lens hoods Remote shutter releases for 500D & 80D (Aug 2019) Vanguard 60" tripod (over 7 yrs old, for 500D) K&F Concept 70" tripod (Jun 2019) K&F Concept 79" tripod (Dec 2019) Lenovo G500 laptop: Intel i3 processor, 500Gb HD, 4Gb RAM (2014) Lenovo L27q-10 IPS monitor: 2560x1440 QHD resolution, with 100% sRGB colour gamut (Nov 2019) DarkTable 3.0 photo editing software Ex-large and large photography rucksacks, and other storage bags. As you can see I'm a guy "With all the gear, but No idea". However, I want to become the guy with the "ideas and gear". I'm a keen amateur and also a member of my local Photography Club in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. As I stated earlier, I want to improve my photography skills and the consistency of my image taking and photo editing. Sorry for the length of this comment, I just wanted to give you some background as to who I am, and what I want to achieve on your course.

I generally keep the original picture , as well as the post processed one for future comparison and reference .As far as portrait photography goes , I try and put my subject at ease , a few jokes might help - the only "stuffed shirt" pictures I take are for ( family) passports . Learn to use the Exif data that comes with ( almost) every digital picture you take - this data will (usually ) include camera , lens, camera mode, aperture , shutter speed and ISO . When I was learning photography back in the 80's , I used to carry around a notebook ,and jot down all these details- nowadays , all this info comes with every image you take (on your camera ) - good for seeing what works and what doesn't If your camera comes with a depth of field preview button , USE IT !!!
