Somehow I assumed outer studs (two each side) would work as guides and given there's no play in the cover holes inner studs would be centered (spaced out) to ensure necessary clearance. In other words even when torqued down middle studs should not move and will be locked in position by the cover and anchoring outer studs. Is that not the case with this cover? Otherwise I'm struggling to understand how they would assemble it at the factory 😊

You are right about the tighter clearances around the cam cover holes. It is easy to assemble the engine, and in theory it should all centre itself. However those in the know who have raced these engines have found that the clearance stack ups can mean the studs can be pulled against the inside edge of the head, cutting off or at least restricting oil flow to the cams. One of my earlier SF road bikes had suffered from oil starvation at some time in its life and when I asked the gurus, they all pointed to the stud/head clearance as the most likely cause.
