It finally happened, the plastic coolant Ts failed on me and leaked coolant all over the place. In this video, I talk about what tools and parts I used in order to replace the coolant T's. Since the original coolant Ts are made of plastic, its wise to replace them with metal parts. The metal parts will ensure the repair will last the life of the vehicle. You can get the metal coolant Ts from the website below. Don't forget to check out my other DIY maintenance videos for the Porsche Cayenne.

JTR called me after I ordered the tees asking for permission to replace the 1" / 3/4" tee to 1" / 5/8" tee since it fits better. They knew exactly why I was ordering them. They said "You got this info from a KZbin video, right?". I said "yes". They knew exactly that I was buying them for a Cayenne. Lol.

My T's fit perfectly as evident in the video. As outlined in the video the sizes I went with are -- One tee is 3/4" on all the three inlets and the other tee is 3/4" on the top inlet and the other two horizontal inlets are 1"

Just finished the coolant T's on a 2005 Cayenne turbo. Your right about the hose bonding to the metal pipes. It's almost like the rubber hose was melted onto the metal pipe. Cable hose clamp pliers and silicone brake lube (syl-glide) was a "must have" for the installation.

Hi Dan. Any recommendation what alternate means removing vacuum vent line on air manifold the one in the back? There are 2 clips to be able remove it but one clip was broken off ( probably by previous work done). Maybe there is a special tool for this that you can recommend. Thanks

is the longer thinner hose that runs below from the secondary T accessible from underneath? I have everything torn apart and cant' currently get under. If I know it's accessible from the bottom, I'll put all the new parts on and save that connection for last.

Hi Dan. I'm in the midst of this project now, among other things (i.e. valve cover gasket which is really helping with access). I see no mention of emptying the coolant or bleeding after installing the new metal Tees, which I received today. Is tending to the coolant system at all necessary? I would imagine bleeding, no?
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, the cooling system in a Cayenne is self burping. You will have to top off the coolant after replacing the Ts. After topping off the coolant drive the car and keep an eye on the coolant tank because it will probably need to be topped off again after it burps some air out of the system.

Dan, thanks for the great informative video. I'm getting ready to change these tees out this weekend and was wondering if you can tell me what the sizes of the coolant tees are. I can clearly see the 3/4" size in the video but having trouble seeing the other side. Also, my vacuum line at the back of the block has a broken tee exactly like yours in the video. Did you find a metal replacement for that one too? And if so what size? (My vacuum tee was so crumbled that it came out in pieces so I can't tell the sizes. Any help is much appreciated... Thanks
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 8 жыл бұрын
+aaronhatz The "T" that doesn't have anything written on it means it's the same size as the opposite side. For example if one side has 3/4" than it's the same size on the opposite side. I don't remember what size the plastic vacuum T is, sorry. I was unable to find a metal T and ended up buying a variety back at the autoparts store and that worked. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hi Dan, I'm in the middle of this repair as I type. I have the T's in and wondering about plastic vacuum T and what the top of the T attaches to? I have oil spray coming out of it so it seems to be a balance line between the 2 sides of the motor. I do not see any line that would hook up to this T? Thanks!

One tee is 3/4" on all the three inlets and the other tee is 3/4" on the top inlet and the other two horizontal inlets are 1". I couldn't find a metal replacement for the T on the back of the firewall so I used a new plastic one from Harbor Freight -- sorry don't remember the size I used. My plastic vacuum T came out the same way. I don't know why German car companies are so infatuated with cheap plastic but for some reason they are... Hope this helps! Good luck!

@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 8 жыл бұрын
+mikael stigberg Hi Mikael, yes, my Cayenne has already been upgraded to the metal coolant pipes. Unfortunately Porsche does not make a set of metal "coolant T's" so these parts will fail unless upgraded to metal. If your plastic coolant pipes have failed, now is a good time to upgrade to metal coolant T's as well. Hope this helps!

@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 8 жыл бұрын
+matt powell Matt, there are not any part numbers, you tell them the sizes you need in aluminum. My video at 8:37 shows what sizes you need. One of the T's is 3/4" all the way around where the other T is 3/4" on the "I" part and the other two outlets are 1" on either side. Hope this clarifies what you need.

I can attest to the vent lines being brittle. Both of mine were starting to crack and leak coolant when engine was hot to the point they filled up the valley under intake and had coolant running out of the transmission bell housing holes. When I discovered it and touched one it crumbled apart.
@DIYDanCars

Using plastic for an application like this is just stupid. I'm still shaking my head as to why Porsche decided to do this. I guess you don't become the most profitable car company in the world by building quality cars. :)
@Pollux95630
@Pollux95630 3 жыл бұрын
DIY Dan they all do it...but seems German plastic doesn’t have the same durability as their Japanese and domestic counterparts. My wife’s ‘07 Dodge Caravan has crazy amount of plastic under the hood that is obviously way more durable than Porsche plastic.

So these are the T's? Not the overall coolant pipes that need replacing also? Want to know where to look to see if my used turbo has been upgraded or not.
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 7 жыл бұрын
Correct these are the "coolant T's" that everyone talks about. The coolant pipes are under the intake manifold and the coolant T's are behind the engine near the firewall on the driver side.
@rush4ever1
@rush4ever1 7 жыл бұрын
DIY Dan in reply to what you said, so both of these commonly need to be replaced? I had only known about the pipes not the T's have you replaced both of yours? At the same time? 50 something thousand miles you had when you did the T's?
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, if the plastic coolant pipes have failed more than likely the plastic coolant T's are not far behind. Only the Cayenne Turbo has coolant T's. Thankfully my coolant pipes were already upgraded to metal, but the coolant T's were original and failed in the 50k mile range. I had a set of T's made out of metal so this failure will never happen again.

This is making me second guess looking at buying a turbo S now :( . How long of a job would you say this is? Too bad you didn't have a start to finish DIY. I'm a little bit of a DIY but I'd be nervous working on an in depth looking project like this.
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 8 жыл бұрын
I did the water pump at the same time so it's really hard to give a start to finish time. You do have to remove the intake manifold, driver side air pump, and a few other hoses and such. Most of your time will be spent trying to reach the coolant T clamps to get them off. I probably have around 4-5 hours in the coolant T replacement. The key is not to rush the job and take your time. If reliability is key a Cayenne is probably not the best vehicle for you. Even though my Cayenne hasn't been the most reliable car I have ever owned, it definitely is one of the most enjoyable. Good luck in the hunt!

When you order the new hoses they come with the plastic T's. I removed the plastic T's from the hoses and had them replaced with the custom aluminum T's.
