"I've been drivin' this truck for a year now and I still mess up sometimes". I love that, that inspires confidence for anyone thinking of going for their CDL, you could be a driver of 25 years and still miss gears, it'll happen. Thanks for doing this video man it was really informative, keep it up.

That's same year I got my Class 8 license using my Dad's 74' 359 Pete, it was a 13 speed but the instructor had me shift it as a 10 speed! CDL showed up in the late 1980's I do believe.

I’m going to stop raging so hard when a semi cuts me off in the fast lane to let another trucker merge onto the highway, even though the merging truck is supposed to yield. You guys might as well be splitting the atom inside that cab.

thank you for this! Trust me, we don't WANT to but momentum is HUGE in a big rig. When we have to hit the brakes, for whatever reason, it takes the truck FOREVER to build that speed back up. It's way more of hazard for a big rig to have to stop on an on-ramp completely than it is to inconvenience a car in the left lane...who can regain their speed in a matter of seconds as opposed to minutes.

When you're double clutching and getting the hang of it every time you shift say this in your head; Clutch to neutral, clutch to gear. This is the exact speed you want to shift at. When you're done saying "Clutch to neutral" you should be in neutral. When you're done saying clutch to gear - it should be in gear.

Man to this day I look back and watch your videos over and over again. You inspired me to get my CDL and for the last 8 months I worked as a company driver in an automatic. An opportunity came up to work for a small local company hauling steel in and out of the steel mills in the midwest. I took it and said yes right away. Slight problem though...I havent driven a manual truck since trucking school. I was super nervous and did not want to make a fool out of myself. So I came back and watched your videos. Even the ones that were not about shifting because I just paid attention to how you were shifting and floating through the gears. I have been out training with the owner for a month now and he has been very patient with me. I can now say I feel very comfortable going out on my own. Thanks for the great content and honestly cant wait until you can get everything sorted out and get back on the road.

When I got my cdl, my dad taught me the technique of "ghost double-clutching." All that's involved is that you move your leg, but only move the clutch pedal maybe half an inch. Then, just to make instructors, and the tester happy, I'd double-clutch on a downshift. Trust me, the ghost double-clutching trick saved my left leg, knee, and hip much trouble. Afterwards, I taught myself floating and had so much more fun shifting.

I usually double clutch the lower gears up to 5th and float the rest. You've gotta try left foot braking while float downshifting with the engine brake on, you can blip the throttle with your right foot while still slowing down, letting the engine brake do most the work.

My big challenge back in school was pressing the clutch deep enough to where the gear engaged smoothly. Instructor wondered why I had trouble with that and figured it might be because of my long legs - i.e. less leverage on the pedal, and I believe that’s true. It seemed like I had to put a hell of a lot more effort into the clutching than others to achieve the same result.

I find, personally, that unless you are completely empty and the truck is brand new, split shifting allows you to get into gear much more smoothly, both up and down. Once you have gained decent ability to use the "regular gears" , i would encourage you to practice splitting gears as often as you can. You never know when the company needs a heavy load hauled and you are the only one available at the time...quick way to earn a raise! Or a quick way to die or kill someone if you didn't practice. Concurrent with this instructors information... it also opens up a lot more speed variables so any speed sign can be followed without over revving or lugging the engine! Edit* Not for the right video but still applies f*** it (spit to the ground)

Great video, I have been in trucking for over 40 years and you did it prefect. The only thing I do different is only use the clutch to start and stop. The other thing is a lot of new drivers will sit at a light with the clutch pushed right to the floor and that raises hell with the clutch brake. Unless you are changing gears you don't need to push the clutch right to the floor. Great job, nice dash to 389 right.

Aaron Sanborn Yeah I know that’s what I was I saying. I wanted to learn in a manual they didn’t have any manuals at the truck driving school I went to and yep I know the restriction thing isn’t that big of a deal you could learn in a manual and just go back and test out but times are changing and the way they are training isn’t what it used to be so you’re lucky if you can get in a manual unless you use someone’s truck and learn like that but if you go to a truck driving school like I did which honestly had it’s pros and cons you’re going to be in an automatic. Not my choice I was told before I started school they train in manuals when I got there they had stopped and said they are phasing out I couldn’t control that if I wanted to.

I've always wanted to learn how to drive an 18 speed. Seems simple enough since I only ever drive manual vehicles.

Was Trained On A 4 Speed Truck Towing Trailers A GMC Dually Work Truck. 1st Was Granny. Basically Get Out Of Mud Gear. Lol. Then Had A 10 Speed. Driving And Learning Was Actually Fun. Learned How To Back Trailers Quickly Running Underground Phone Lines In Rural Areas. Unloaded The Machine Off Trailer A Few Times To Get Me Out Of Ditches When I Had To Turn Around After Going Down Single Lane Back Roads. With Dead End. This Was In The Mid 90s. I Got Scared A few Times I Will Admit. After Dark In Middle Of Nowhere Using Flashlight And Headlights Getting Out Of Ditches. Wouldn't Trade That Experience For Anything. Thanks For Sharing Your Video. 😎.

I remember in truck school I was driving my S-10 with a 5 speed. Most awkward thing in the world was going from that to a rig then back to that every day lol slamming that clutch and double shifting a synchro 5 speed like a mofo lol

I was able to float gears in my test in Minnesota. Double clutching perfectly every time is difficult, especially with a lighter load or empty. Maybe that's just me.

I just got the best trucking job ever in Denver, CO. 60 cpm, driving a 2020 volvo 860, automatic. They keep me running nonstop, never bother me at all, they don't care about mpg, I can keep it running 24/7, plenty of hometime, and always light loads, get paid 25$ every stop, trucks limited at 71 mph. I'm loving it.

We had an old international loadstar with a V-92 silver Detroit & a 5×4 transmission that's what I learned on when I was just starting out at 14 on our farm. Its pretty simple once ya get the hang of it but... I sure did half come to a complete stop & start all over again cuzz i would get lost like several times there at first lol. That ol truck would only do 60 top speed but boy that ol V8 Detroit sure made it sound like you was really rollin out lol.
