If you get into a routine, caring for your skates is pretty easy, my post is long, but it is what I do to prevent many of the problems Katie mentioned. The number one thing is to keep them dry and exposed to air, this will keep them from having rusty blades or being smelly. The blade, the sole and the interior need to be kept dry and aired out, all the time. My routine is, after skating I dry the blade, the outside of the boot and the sole. I then apply a puffy terry soaker that covers the blade and the bottom of the boot, it helps to pull the moisture off the sole. I also slide a Stink Eeze critter in each boot, which is a dessicant that absorbs moisture from my sweaty skates. I usually open my Zuca bag door in the car on the way home to start the airing process. When I get home, I immediately take off the puffy soakers and check my blades for any nicks. If I find anything significant I will touch then up with a honing stone. After that, I apply a blade only soaker to each one (if you leave puffys on, the sole can start to rot because it will hold moisture against it). I also pull out my Stink Eeze critters, and I store my boots in my Zuca with the soles facing out for several hours so the soles get nice and dry. Before bed I usually turn them around so that they are lying on their back with the open part facing out with the tongues wide open. Once a week, I check the screws on my blades and I apply a light coating of mineral oil to the blades to prevent rust. Oiling them after sharpening also seems to help take off any fine debris from the sharpener machine. Other hints: keep a journal of your skating hours so you will know when your blades are due for sharpening, everyone is different, I prefer mine to be done after about 20-25 hours if possible. Also, keep a dessicant packet in your skating bag, I keep one in the little net inside my Zuca, they sell them online and when they are full of moisture and need to be replaced they turn to gel. This helps keep your bag even drier, especially if you can't open it right away. Also remember to dry your other stuff, not just your skates i.e. don't leave moist towels, soakers etc lying around in your bag. I keep really cheap shop rags from eBay to dry my blades and use a fresh one every day, the used ones go in the laundry. I flip my puffys inside out after I get home to dry them and I always pull out wet socks, gloves and other clothing and either wash them or hang out to dry. I have never needed a fan for drying with this routine but someone who skates as much as Katie might, it is a good idea. Also the skate bags that have the mesh pockets for skates, such as transpak our Fafada area great for keeping skates dry without having to unzip compartments. Sorry so long, but I love to talk about skate care :)

wow, thanks for the long post, very useful I have only one pair of soakers for now, so I leave them the day I skate (once a week only for now), and I put them out the morning after to let them dry out. I carefully leave my skates on a towel, nothing on the blade for a day then I put the soakers back. cute soakers are so expensive duuuuuh so I made mine with a microfiber towel and cute stuff, there are some simple tutorials facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1195215350546510&set=a.228116990589689.55869.100001741695762&type=1&theater Is coconut oil okay for the blade?
@mrskaa75848 жыл бұрын
HikariAliasHikaChan I am not sure about coconut oil, I know in the olden days people used butter to help prevent rust, I doubt coconut oil could be much worse lol The mineral oil is pretty cheap, I actually soaked one of my blade rags with it and I keep it in a zip lock bag. It is really easy to use, just slide the rag along the blade and then I cover them with soakers designated for getting oily. I like your soaker link, I got my puffy ones off of eBay, they were about 20 dollars and look similar to those, only puffier.

Ooh I’m a year late, but basically you are doing a Walt’s jump and make sure to kick that leg up all the way, as high as possible, and think that your doing a backspin in the air. Hug tight and imagine yourself doing a backspin, and only unclench when you land and keep yourself over you right side / axis. Wish me luck lol!

Veryyyy odd question, I'm 17 and I've just started lessons for figure skating, I've been skating every now and then for many many years and have developed a fair bit of confidence on the ice. But I recently finished high school and decided to sign up to take it more seriously seeing as I now have a lot more free time and less stress hahaha, any advice you could give to a beginner like me?? I'm struggling to find good advice seeing as most "beginner advice" for skating is targeting towards kids much younger then me, love your videos so so much! ily 💖

georgia rose My tip is start exercising 5-10 minutes everyday to help build muscles before you need them and start stretching for splits. Also THE BASICS ARE SOO IMPORTANT MAKE SURE YOU MASTER THEM before attempting anything bigger then a loop. So up to basic 6 and work on edges. Also it will be hard but don't give up or become frustrated. Try to just have fun.

@Riionaa38 жыл бұрын
Also when and why should i join a club?
@elliemegel28468 жыл бұрын
Ok first I recommend doing group lessons for a little bit until you learn back crossovers and then switching to private. Second yes you will be able to do smaller competitions and if you work hard mabye even adult nationals. Also figure skaters do both moves in the field and freestyle. It is a requirement for testing to move up into high levels but don't worry about that now. Clubs are when you get a private coach.
@elliemegel28468 жыл бұрын
Natasha Mair oh and when you get on the ice for lessons were thin socks,gloves and leggings. Jeans are okay for beginners but they restrict movement and can get wet easily. Ask for more questions. I started skating at 9 but got to the first level then quite. I started again sat age 13 and it's been under a year I am learning to start testing is trying to land lutzs and getting my layback spin. I have been first in my program at all my competitions so far. It's been hard work but you can do anything just keep at it.

You can also buy some EDEA who are cheaper like "Esordio" or "Rondó" if you are just a beginer. I dont now if those are disponible for ice artisting skating, because i practise roller artistic skating, but for "us" who are just starting our coaches recommend us to buy those cheaper EDEA boats...

I collect kimono, and keeping mold out is SERIOUSLY important since it's all silk. Among the cedar blocks to keep moths away, I put silica packets in the area where I store them to absorb the moisture. When I got my skates, I used this method, tossed a silica packet in each boot, and it keeps the inside dry when I'm not using them. :)

Sarah Honge most skaters have a spin board at home, I personally don't because my coach warned me about how different a spring board is to actually spinning. I do occasionally use one of my friend's for the sole purpose of testing how it will feel spinning faster and getting my foot in the right position.

Do you have tips on breaking in new skates? I'm so sad because I just got some Gam's and I'm trying not to panic. They're more boot than I'm used to. My older skates were Jackson Mystiques left over from a zillion public skates, but I started taking adult lessons and got new skates. Heavier. Lots of padding. And it feels like I can't cinch them down enough to hold my foot in place. For the first time ever my heel is nice and secure (my feet are wicked narrow), but I feel like I'm getting a vertical lift out of my boot ever time I try to do anything, even a cross over-- it feels like walking around in an unlaced sneaker one size too big. The woman in the shop was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable so I'm trying to just have confidence that once I soften the leather I'll be able to get them tight enough but for now it's just sheer panic. I'll say one thing, though, this is also the first time I felt what it's like to have blades that are aligned... It feels so secure and stable and like such a relief not to have to compensate. So-- what do I do about the boot? Just more time? I'm about to put them under an electric blanket and sit on them.

About sharpening , I have multiple questions: as a person that skates once a week by herself , how often should I get my blades sharpened ? And since I don't have a coach how am I supposed to know what to say to the person that sharpens them ? Another thing is when I first bought them , the person that sharpenend them also sharpened hockey blades before mine ... since the only place I can sharpen them in is my local ice skating rink , I'm afraid they sharpened them the wrong way because I noticed little streaks and scratched on my blades when I first got them sharpened there :/

@sophiaawang7 жыл бұрын
Bc after you skate and your blade is wet and after you wipe it with your towel if you put it back in your hard guards your blades are still moist and your skates can rust and blades are quiet expensive so your soft guards are basically for drying the extra wetness from your blades so DO NOT PUT YOUR SKATES BACK INTO YOUR HARD GUARDS!!!

What if the rink has rubber floors, would you need to wear the hard guards then?

I bought my first skates today and I mentioned hard guards and I was told they weren't necessary...The rink has rubber flooring from the benches to the ice so I was told guards would just be annoying and my blades would be fine but I worry a bit...

Cream-Tea-And-Sandwiches if you walk on your toe picks for super short trips across the rubber, it's ok. My rink in the same way. But if I'm going all the way across the rink, I but my guards on

I put these things called stinkeez in my skates so they don't smell. Also, I loved the colors of your rockerz! I have pink and black ones

I went on the ice for the first time today I kid you not when I say I never loved anything more 2:30h flew by so fast and even tho I only learned how to skate around without tripping every two steps I felt so accomplished and was already wanting to go back the second I got out Unfortunately I’ll only be able to go probably 3 times a month and I won’t be able to take lessons But rental skates are the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever tried I want skates really bad , I think it’ll help me a lot I’m binge watching so many videos and literally making myself depressed How nice
