I always hated my mousy blonde and used highlights. Now I am turning quite white and depending on the lighting, season and perspective, these strands look super light blonde. Plus suddenly some strawberry blonde is coming through (?!). 😅 It looks like a continuation of my intentional highlights. I agree! In fact, I’d even suggest tinting the lighter parts of the hair to colour match the natural colour. The tint doesn’t require bleach and can be “semi-permanent”, just in case Ellie Jean changes her mind m.

Growing up in the US, my mother characterized my naturally dark blonde hair as "dirty dishwater blonde". Not sure where she picked that up, she was a naturally platinum blonde her whole life. Some days I took that remark as a criticism and wonder now if it reflected a disappointment that my hair wasn't as beautiful as hers. She's gone now and I can't ask, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she was just clueless how the choice and power of words can impact a child, even decades later!

Mother's shaming their daughters for not having the same hair is a sadly a common problem. My mother had a silky straight black hair and I had a curly "dirty" dark brown and spent a lot of my life thinking that my hair is "wrong" just because my mother for whatever reason thought her hair is the "standard" for a beautiful hair. It took me years to realise that my hair is normal too, that it's beautiful too, there's literally nothing wrong with my hair.

Yup, my mom was a hairdresser and my hair color was called dirty blonde and dishwater blonde. That's just what they called it, and didn't mean at all that it was liked or disliked. I don't like any of the common names used, even mousy brown, lol. The only description I claim is ash blonde. ;)

a lot of people in Poland have this hair colour (including me) and we usually just call it dark blonde. it's surprising and sad to learn that people call it such awful names in other places edit: we also call a person with such hair 'szatyn' from French 'châtaigne' - 'chestnut'. szatyn encompasses everything from dark blonde to light brown.

Polish-American here, too! I had white blonde hair as a child and it has darkened over the years to an ash blonde. At certain times of year, it even has a bit of red/copper tones in the sun. I'm starting to get a few whitish/grey hairs in my early 40s, so I want to embrace the color I have now and enjoy seeing the color change as I age.

I can speak to this very transition! A couple years ago I thoroughly embraced the “mushroom brown” look with ashy highlights all throughout my naturally darker, cool-toned, brown hair and I’ve probably received 150 positive remarks on my hair color since. Not exaggerating. It blows my mind how many people stop me at the grocery, etc. to say how much they like my hair color. I questioned it a little, at first, but the overwhelming responses tell me it must be quite flattering. If you’ve been on-the-fence about trying this look, I encourage you to take the leap. I also want to say that I love how many people are willing to stop a stranger and encourage them with a compliment. You never know when that might just make someone’s day or be the sunshine they need at a rough time. I’ve been working on doing this, myself…whenever a complimentary thought crosses my mind, speak it out loud, even to a stranger. I love this video so much!

This hair color really starts to shine next to it's correct color palette. For example for a summer type it's cool+light(+muted) clothes and makeup. When I started following this, I suddenly started getting questions and compliments about my hair. If I maybe had gotten something done to it, if I went blonder or got babylights. But it was just my natural depth and natural highlights finally coming alive and getting noticable. Idk why, but I think summer hair in particular gets overpowered immediately when it's next to wrong colors. There is a soft silvery glow when it's next to the right colors.

This level of hair can have some warmth, in my opinion. I'm an autumn (probably soft), and I have it. I was dark golden blonde as a child and then started coloring my hair at age 15 as it started to darken to a level 6 because I thought it was ugly. I was so wrong! It's impossible to replicate with dye and I couldn't get my natural color back until I grew it out. Probably My favorite description is light neutral-golden brown, or bronde. It doesn't have the richness of brunette hair, but it's also not bright like blonde hair, and it's not very warm like red or auburn hair, but it's also not ashy either. It feels very diffused and muted, a neutral brown at the top with natural golden and strawberry highlights, but without enough intensity to make it a vibrant hair color.

same here. I think the most important feature of this hair colour is softness: it's neither light nor dark, not very cold and not very warm. One thing we can say for sure is that it's not deep. And as such, I think it mostly belongs to soft colour types and I'd bet it mostly appears in soft autumns and soft summers.

this sounds like my hair too! I'm a true autumn, and wear soft autumn colors often, due to my hair. I used to be (golden) blond as a kid, now the top layer of my curls is mousy brown, my lower layer is dark brown but quite cool toned, and I have natural golden highlights overall. my hair color is very multidimensional and looks like the hair of 3 different people. in one color theory video I finally heard that the multidimensionality of hair is typical for autumns and everything clicked. I used to hate it during my teenage years and dyed it all kinds of colors but it always ended up looking like I am wearing a wig. I am glad I have this natural color now and I love it on myself and others. it's subtle and works for ethereal essence perfectly

I agree! I think any season can have the look of “mousy brown” hair. I am a spring but was also blonde as a young child and used to often struggle with accepting my in-between shade of hair. To me, “mousy brown” refers to any in-between shade of light brown/dark blonde

Interesting how in countries with a majority of white/European population this haircolor is seen as dull, muddy and not so "desirable", here in Latin America with a majority of morenos and dark hair and eyed population (either light or dark skinned) don't care about the hue of the hair, if it's light enough it will be always seen as a beautiful blonde haircolor (even if the hair is actually brown lol). Of course this is due colonialism, colorism and eurocentrism, but still wanted to share this fact 😊

"Summer hair" is a great description. Mine is sort of mixed mouse, with light and dark tones, and it gets much lighter with sun and sea swimming. I have always loved it, and didn't dye it until I started to get some white at the temples recently. I literally only blend in those bits.

Im doing the same and recently decided to grow out ny natural hair color! Last i checked it was a mousey brown and was dirty blondish as a child. So glad someone is finally talking about this! All women my age and older were always told mousy hair is boring, dull, nerdy and you have to dye it etc. I dyed for many years but gave up as grey took over. My hair is dry enough due to aging without adding bleach to it too. In natural hair you see so many tones and shades in different lights that you just don't see in dyed hair (unless you want to spend a lot of time and money recreating it!)

As a blonde (winter/fall) that went naturally ashy/neutral brown with age, soft highlights, or lowlights if you are already a very bleached blonde, can be an excellent way to blend the hair tones while growing it out. Also a money piece in front might give you that bit of blonde you are used to. (I died it all brown and it was too harsh, but to each their own)

Super useful! I'm a soft summer, used to be gold blonde as a kid and I'm now a dark mousy blonde in the winter with natural golden sun bleaching in the summer, which turns the ends of my hair kind of reddish. I've always tried to lighten it, because I like to think of myself as blonde but after only a few months the gold/red always comes out. Not being able to totally bleach my hair because it's curly and it would cause too much damage, the tips to embrace mousy brown were so helpful!!! Finally I can focus on the fact that it looks good for my face and color, rather than fitting into one of the boxes "blonde" or "brunette".

I wanted to mention that adding in some very subtle fine lowlights throughout your blonde that match your roots (or slightly lighter) could blend the ends and feel softer as you continue to grow out your hair :) especially with a lob cut, I think it would look so beautiful with your classic features!

I’m a spring so not exactly the same situation, but I have hair a shade lighter (or so) than Taylor swift and I always used to get highlights. When I stopped and all the hair grew out, my hair was in completely different condition- to the point that my haircuts stay the same shape (with very few split ends) until my next haircut as opposed to becoming frayed or having breakage that would cause the uncolored lower layer to grow a lot more than the top half of my hair. You should also be able to do a lot more to style your hair once it is unprocessed, and not have damage. A really great leave in conditioner is the Living Proof repair one. Normal rinse out conditioner does not hold the moisture in after you dry it, not really. Super important step. Your hair will also be way more glossy. I never got any compliments on my hair when I was spending $250 every couple months on highlights but now I get compliments regularly. Healthy hair just ALWAYS looks better.

I’m black, and I’m a bright spring. I started buying chocolate colored braids and wearing neutrals that best fit my color season because, it’s easier to pair with my favorite essences which is ingenue and a sophisticated coquette. And you are 100% correct. I kind of have a soft inner glow from altering the color of my braids from black to a warm chocolate brown. I m going to try chocolate brown wigs next so that I don’t have to put heat on my hair as I grow it out. I would also suggest the same if you get bored and want to see mushroom brown color without dying.

Oh Ellie Jean, it's not dirty, mousy or muddy blond. It's Caramel Coloured Hair. 🙂 Though I do like your term "Old Money Blond." My husband calls me "Honey Hair" as a term of affection. My hair is this colour - or at least similar. Depending in the light, it can look blond, dark brown or even slightly strawberry blond. At the ripe old age of 34, I love it. I dyed it as a teenager and it looked terrible. I'm never dying it again. I'm not going to spoil its natural beauty. xx ❤

I hated my hair for most of my life. It's only been since 2019 that I started embracing my natural hair texture, and that has had the side effect of making me love my natural color. I can't imagine a color that would look better on me than my dark ash blonde with my natural honey highlights. It also helps that I've gotten absolutely diligent with sunscreen, and so my skin is no longer turning the same color as my hair the way it does when I have a tan. 😂 In short - your genetics know what they're doing. Give yourself a chance to at least *see* what you look like before you decide that something about you needs changed. ❤

I was a towhead until I was 9-10 yrs old then it would get summer streaks . In my 30’s it got very dark with gold and red undertones . For about 10 yrs I highlighted it like it use to be when I was younger . Then Covid happened and my hair started turning silver . I loved it ! It was the best match for my skin , it lightened my hair without spending $ and hours to achieve it . Having said all that embrace your natural beauty . I consider my hair to be sandy blonde. When I was younger, it was the color of dry sand and now that I'm older it is the color of wet sand. I like the description of sandy because there is room for color variation. I don't dye my hair but I can imagine that if you have a color similar to wet sand then adding some highlights the color of dry sand would be flattering and keep the tones in the same family.

I like really love to have this hair color, because it can be so versatile! It‘s easy to lighten,, but you can also let lighter blond grow out without it looking to harsh. I put highlights in my hair every 1,5 years - I enjoy how light it is in the beginning, but also the darkness at the end of the growing out progress. Very good for my bank account haha and I don’t get bored!

Neoclassical blonde (or some similar effect) is what I'd like to call it because it looks composed and relaxed. Platinum/brighter blonde looks impressive and ethereal but can also look intense/piercing. Also imo I like the ombre look of your hair growing out and I think it gives you a "cool girl" vibe in the meantime especially in that 3word "french airy ethereal" fit you had in a yt short. :>

I've always called it "mousy" & a lot of hairdressers I've had over the years have called my hair "dark blonde" The tragedy is that I was born with virtually white hair but sadly it's got darker & darker with age. Now I'm 50 it's pretty much brown at the back with the classic salt & pepper grey all at the front & I hate it. I'd love to be the mousy blonde I was in my 20's...yet in my 20's I hated my mousy hair. I thought it was boring. But we always want what we don't have haha x

I’m one of the ones who had ash blond as a kid and darkened to ash brown in my teens. I’ve had burgundy hair, golden blonde (not my idea, hated it), ‘dark platinum’ which was a soft cool shade deeper than my own, semipermanent teal in a quarantine fit, and now I’m looking at white growing in. It has so many different colours up close it reminds me of tree bark, and gives me a sense of harmony with nature 😊

I've heard some experts say you shouldn't wash your hair more than once a week, and I've heard others say you should be washing multiple times per week with a cleansing shampoo for build-up. After trying the method of washing infrequently, I've started to experiment with washing more frequently, with my reasoning being that if I remove build-up from my scalp and stimulate my scalp with massage, my hair will grow faster. This is my current wash routine: Once a week I use The Ordinary glycolic acid on my scalp the night before wash day, I massage it into my scalp while I hang my head upside down. The Next day, I wash with my regular shampoo / conditioner. I love the Bain De Terre moisturizing shampoo / conditioner. On my second wash day of the week, I use jojoba oil on my scalp (I think of it like an oil cleanser) and give myself another scalp massage. I put some oil on my ends as well. Afterwards, I wash with Nutagenia's T-Sal shampoo, which is a salicylic acid shampoo. I wet my scalp a little and then rub that shampoo onto my scalp. I let it sit for a couple of minutes, then I lather it up and wash it out. I follow up with my regular shampoo and conditioner. I have only been following this routine for one month but my hair is soooo soft and not dry at all. I have a friend who has very long hair with a bright fashion color. She only washed her hair once every 2 weeks. I think this makes a lot of sense for her because she already has long hair and she wants to keep it vibrant. I'm not as concerned about my color and just want to grow it as fast as possible.

I use to be a bright blonde when i was younger. As ive gotten older, it's turned darker, more ashy... i hated it and dyed my hair a cool berry red. Though that red color really fits me, ive been red for like 4 years now and i suddenly have the urge to grow out my natural and embrace it. I feel awful for how ashamed i was of my natural hair...

Before getting whitish hair I had that color. Here's an easy way to rock it. I wore the soft summer palette. Some medium ash brown haired folk are true summers. I'd highlight it part of the year with a chamomile tea rinse. It was easy. It brought out my features and skin very well. It's the most maligned and dyed color but looks good, actually.

To make the transition of growing out your hair easier, you can get a semi or demi-permanent glaze over your blonde ends. I did it when growing out my hair and it was much more flattering.

I have been highlighting it since a teenager. when I do more than 6 months, even my close friends and family tell me I look sick with my natural, yes, the people that love me. So glad you did this video Interesting comparison with springs, I would have thought it was the same for all of us around that level 7-8 blonde colour but it’s true, I have more honey/ golden highlights and going blonde is really easy for me. I scalp bleach my hair atm but tone to the lightest golden blonde… and I barely have regrowth. Im about three weeks out from then and someone couldn’t believe I dye my hair when I told them… with three weeks of regrowth… I’m convinced it’s because I’ve kept the tones the same. And it just blends well When I used to tone it cool/ whiter the regrowth was very obvious (imo).. I’m guessing due to contrast of tones

Not to go against Ellie-I love you Ellie!!-but I did find the right box dye to give you a cool medium blonde-light brown(depending on your current hair color). It’s revlon medium ash blonde and it’s only like $3 at most retailers. They also have a dark ash blonde if you want it slightly darker. If you have kind of a yellowy blonde, but are naturally mousy brown it basically tones you back to your natural shade. It’s amazing if you don’t want to wait for it to grow out. I'm currently growing out my hair too. I had done this once, but went very radical and buzzed all the bleached hair off when I got 2cm of regrowth. I will not do that again, because as liberating as it was, I don't wanna go through that phase of having hair that stands straight up and away from my head anymore. My hair does this until it hits the 7cm mark (which is when it starts to form waves again) and it just looks CRAZY. My hair isn't quite as ashy/desaturated as yours, but would still be considered "mousy". Mine is more like... take a red-orange, put it to low-medium value and take away about three quarters of its saturation. So you can still see warmth in it in full spectrum lighting, but cool lighting will fully take it away and make it look both darker and more "frosted". Whereas warm lighting of course adds warmth to it and makes it look like a hazelnut color. The truth sits somewhere in between, so maybe... frosted hazelnut? If it lightens by the sun it will turn bronzy to soft honey blonde. That mixture is actually quite nice which is one of the reasons why I wanna grow out my hair again. And this time also wanna grow my hair long again. For me this is way easier because I got a pixie cut rn and this won't take as long. It's still frustrating because I want two things at once xD I have short hair for 22 years now and I really don't wanna maintain it anymore. Short hair isn't that much of a breeze as many people tell you. Especially not if you have to wake up at 4 am for work and just HAVE to style your hair. If my hair was long, I could just put it up/back and that's it. I can't wait for my natural hair color to surround my face AND for my hair to be long enough to just put it up with ease. I'm basically fed up with bleaching my roots every month, constantly cutting the hair, styling it each morning... simplicity often times really carries the greater joy...

I just wanted to give a mention that soft autumn can be a little "mousy" too!, my hair has slightly more depth than a cooler season but theres definitely a muted quality to my hair which I share with a lot of summers. I think a slight difference is that in some lights my hair can look ashy and in other lights very reddish which may be some of that neutral color season stuff coming to play.

I have this haircolour! As well as having green/blue/grayisch eyes so i really cant name the colour of any of my features 😅 i used to dye my hair but it often turned way too warm very quickly. Ashy brown is often very cooltoned wich is hard to maintain with dyed hair and looking back at those pictures with dyed hair, nothing looks as good as my natural hair colour.

I’m a true autumn with neutral undertone that leans warm, according to the professional analysis I did. That said, I grew up with dirty blond and for 20yr always got highlights. Only 1 time in those 20yr did I go an auburn type. It wasn’t the right red for me and a total shock to myself from always being blond I eventually dyed it back to blond. I’m working on growing my roots out but man the mousy color looks so dark from what I’m used to 😂

If you want to keep your hair colour more even throughout the growing-out process, consider applying a toner to the lighter ends only that emulates your regrowth. (Green hair can happen if you go several levels darker, without filling the hair with a copper shade first. If you're unsure how to do this as an at home DIY, go see a professional hairdresser instead)

I personally just don’t like this hair color (and I happen to have it). I think it’s ok to not like certain shades. We certainly don’t need to call it unflattering names, but hey, if I prefer my hair with some added warmth or highlights, that’s fine. Life’s too short not to wear your hair how you like, so if you don’t want to embrace it and prefer to change it to something that makes you feel more fabulous, it’s really no big deal. Do you!

Sometimes it's actually product buildup and hard water making hair look so dull and dark! I switched to all clean products and no 'cones + a shower head filter, and I couldn't believe how light and bright my natural color is, in reality. And my hair doesn't feel weighed down anymore, either.
