Great video! I think there's a confusion about saturation. "Saturated" actually refers to a color's purest form. When you say a color is saturated you mean it's the most clear it can get. The opposite of saturated is desaturated, wich you get as the color looses it's vividness. The thing is most people relate "muted" with grayish tones, but in reality, with a medium value color, you'll notice it starts to look more grayish as it desaturates, but with a really dark or a really light value color, you'll only notice it by the absence of tone.
@tamaraarriola6582
@tamaraarriola6582 2 жыл бұрын
As an illustrator, I was thinking the same. For example, if you totally desaturate a picture it will transform in a black and white image. On the other hand, a highly saturated image would have the brightest, more vibrant colors, the more vivid version of them. There are so many tricky words about color, it's perfectly normal be a little confused about them. 😊👍 Great video as always!

In art classes, I got the same definition of saturated. Pure color without white, gray, black or brown added. Secondary and tertiary colors which are Blends, can also be saturated, with no white &/or black added. In some systems, clear colors are always either tinted with white or left clear and saturated. Like springs, with a touch or more of white. Or Icy Winter colors, white with a tiny hint of pure color. Summers have a touch of gray in the colors. Autumns have a touch of black added to their colors, but some autumn colors are so muddy (thinking of some hideous camping clothing) that just frankly don't bring a glow to anyone's face that I can find. Who knows what they put into those colors, lol! That said, certain colors with a touch of black added is stunning on dark winters (and cool summers, which is probably the closest to her soft summer.) I like the 16 type system, and I feel like I fall closest into “dark summer“ but I’ve never seen that type anywhere except on the Kettlewell Website.

I understand the confusion about the term "saturated" in this context, because in the visual art community "saturated" means very bright, and "desaturated" means the colour is closer towards grey. So it feels like the opposite to how i normally think of the word "saturated" when it comes to colour
@uwuowo4069
@uwuowo4069 Жыл бұрын
Also confused me but I think it means when you have a mix of a bunch of saturated colors, they mud together and create an unclear colour. So its not so much "saturated" as "so many saturated colors that we're back into muted tones"

Color saturation refers to the intensity of colour, as the saturation increases, the colours appear to be more pure so the definition in this tutorial is incorrect. Highly saturated colours are the OPPOSITE to muted & greyish colours ❤💛💙

Determining whether you're warm or cool is way more difficult than I initially thought it was. My mom and I always thought we were both very cool toned, but after swatching my mom yesterday with the various colors we have around the house, lo and behold, she glows in the bright, *warm* colors! We were both so used to seeing her skin in cool tones, that it took us awhile to recognize how much better she looked in warm. Then I got to thinking about me, wondering if I was truly a soft summer because I had recently found a very muted, very blue top that washed me out. So I looked up several soft autumn color palettes and thought, "Would you lookie there, all of those colors are the colors that look good on me." I can't wear *clear* warm colors (the horror of me in bright yellow or orange 😬), and so I always thought I must be cool. Nope. Just need to be wearing *muted* warm colors instead.

I've been draped, so I know 100% where I belong, however I have always struggled with warm vs cool, and I think it's because people dismiss neutral undertones. Even using the method you suggest, I really struggle because I actually have hints of both peach and purple. This was always my area of confusion. I typed myself as a bright spring, but I am actually a light summer. (your summary of bright "for a summer" TOTALLY made sense to me!) Anyway, long winded way of saying that I loved your video, but wanted to point out that some people might struggle with cut and dry warm vs cool.
@phoebelang6394

As a soft summer apparently I can get away with both silver and gold as I have neutral undertones however, it’s best to avoid shiny metals and instead go for a more matte finish. I thought this was an interesting way of looking at it: I can go for cool and warm tones but they should always be desaturated and muted instead of bright.
@martina_laray
@martina_laray Жыл бұрын
@@phoebelang6394 That is exactly my case as well! Neither bright gold or bright silver jewelry really look good on me. Brass / antique silver suit me far better - basically jewelry that is muted in tone no matter if it's warmer or cooler leaning. The closer to neutral, the better.
@merrygray2791
@merrygray2791 Жыл бұрын
@@phoebelang6394 I'm the same way. My wedding ring is silver but I gravitate to gold more and after wearing my ring for so long, I can tell, just from the reaction of the metals against my skin, that it doesn't really matter for me. I'm technically a true summer but because of my neutral undertones I can float throughout all three summer palettes. I can wear most of the colors in the soft summer and probably half of the light summer colors. I hadn't thought of looking at jewelry finish though, that's really interesting!

I think the clear/saturated-muted-soft-dimentional names are still confusing. I would opt for something like "streamlined vs. complex" colouring. This way it is clear what is meant: is your colour easy to name, it's simple and straighforward? Or is it compound, complex. with many add-ons, hues and tints mixed in?
@kjeanpociask
@kjeanpociask 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Art School graduate and color theory nerd here. The confusion is coming from a misuse of ‘saturated’. Saturated means ‘vivid; very bright, full and free from an admixture of white and/or black.’ I.e., there isn’t any grey mixed into the color (because in order to add grey, you have to mix in white + black). The word you’re looking for is ‘desaturated’ to mean muted or less vivid. So the terms that line up are: saturated, vivid, clear, bright, easily named vs. desaturated, muted, soft, hazy, faded, muddied or dull, not easily named - more complex. (Some of these terms feel less than flattering, which I think might be why there is such a variety in use - people are trying to avoid words like ‘dull’ or ‘muddy’.

I stumbled upon this post somewhere and am wondering how accurate you think it is. It said, “ Other than skin tone, eyes show more about a person's season than most physical traits. Each season has a dominant feature which is shown in the eye. The SUMMER eye appears as crackly glass, WINTER - spokes on a wheel, SPRING - Yellow sunburst around a gray doughnut shape, AUTUMN - Aztec sun directly around the pupil with specks and dots sometimes.”

This is so interesting because Ive established Im Light Warm and Saturated implying I would be a soft autumn which makes sense to me actually, I do love and wear a lot of natural, muted and warm tones but some of my favorite pieces and items I lean towards a lot are often cool toned but still muted. Sage Green is my favvvv or muted blues. I love fashion so I wear a lot of different things of all colors but ive always noticed I lean to those colors. I also prefer cool toned hair on myself when I do fashion colors. Greens and blues are my favorite, but always light. I don't feel like myself in warm toned hair, I did a fashion color red once and I didn't feel or look like myself at all. But I do enjoy and often go towards an edgy look so the contrast actually makes sense.

I feel like warm colour such as a rust coloured red or warm khaki just make me look either really pink or washed out. This would mean I fall into no category… Confusing 😅

Every 16 year old at Sephora looks at me and automatically assumes I’m warm toned until they apply the yellow/beige foundation on my skin, make a face, and dab it off before I get a chance to look in the mirror and tell them “I told you so.” I’m a cool-toned winter that looks best in jewel tones in spite of/because of my dark brown eyes.

Lol same. I don’t adhere to color theory too closely but I did read up on seasons out of curiosity. And basically the light summer “do not wear” colors are colors I wear frequently, while I own virtually nothing in the recommended colors. 😛 I think there’s something to be said about wanting to dress in contrast to your features vs in harmony with them. It can make for a very cool effect!

First try and I think I might be a dark autumn. My eyes are such a dark brown that I almost thought they were black lol. I've seen other black women say they thought they were dark autumns too so maybe I'll keep questioning it for a while. Edit: I came back after watching your Bridgerton video and realize I might be a spring. Knowing whether I was light or dark was messing with me. I know I'm warm and clear which points to spring. Maybe a bright spring? This is kind of difficult.

You’ve got “saturated” backwards. Not just in color and style but even when grading colored gemstones. There is grey-muting and brown-muting and saturated is the opposite. It’s having a lot of clear pigment.

Hi, I'm from a tropical country too and my foundation is also Maybelline 128. I think I'm a true or dark autumn. On a website (colorwise me), I was classed as DA or DW (different pics used). I believe the DA since my skin has a yellowish tinge & warm colors (reds, orange, yellow) look good on me. I've also "draped" myself (fuchsia vs orange) and I'm sure I have a warm undertone. I now try to dress accdg to the autumn/DA palette. 😊

If you're DA, you can use the warmer colors from DW and if you're DW, you can use cooler colors from DA. I have pale neutral skin, but if i had to choose i I would say more warm than cool, but still very neutral, i have medium - dark golden straberry blonde hair, grey eyes with a blue undertone but with orange around my pupil, and dark brown almost black eyebrows, Some particularly flattering colours on me are burnt orange and teal Though i look good in many coloirs like dark green, bright orange, red and rusty red, some slightly reddish purples, normal but darker purple, more neutral gold jewelry I don't suit yellowish gold, i suit silver too, i look good in both balck and white, i look good in many blues and pinks as well, but i find plain grey quite dull on me, same with lavender, and apricot/peach/pale straw washes me out I think i would be light, saturated and warm, but not sure on what season

@yensid4294

Um, desaturated colors are light or soft or both & can also be dark. Saturated colors can be clear or dark or both as well as light. Saturation is the amount of hue or chroma a color has, value is the depth (light or dark) Pure red would be a saturated midtone color, deepen it with black & it becomes a darker less saturated color. Add white & it is a lighter desaturated color. Add grey & you get a very desaturated color regardless of depth (value) Soft colors are usually desaturated, toned down colors. Saturated colors are just that ( & not necessarily bright or clear) People get this confused all the time. So for you, desaturated colors are what you want (aka soft) Everyone has a value range & a saturation range that is most harmonious (if that is your goal)

I thought I was bright spring for awhile but now I am thinking dark autumn??? My primary features are dark and warm - that is definite. A few years ago I realized silver jewelry washes me out and gold instantly brightens my face. My lips also look much better in peachy-pinks than cool-toned pinks. I also look so much better with my natural brunette hair than I ever did trying to be blonde in my young teen years. However, the saturated vs clear is confusing to me... nothing about my features is totally clear, but i wouldn't say I have a lot of gray at all either, and I look HORRID in gray. In winter my skin is much more neutral. My eyes are green but can look more brown depending on the colors I wear. Also, my hair has a red tint to it, especially after being in the sun a lot in the summer! Color theory can be so confusing lol.

What if I am Light, Warm and Saturated? It would make me a Soft Autumn or Light Spring, right? I really cannot figure it out; As a child my hair used to be almost white blonde, but once I got older it became more like a dark-blonde with copper undertones. My eyes are blue but there is some green in the very center so it's not clear, and I have fair skin but I think I suit peach more than magenta. My eyelashes have always been dark, nearly black, even as a child. I am like, so confused...

Thank you! I’ve had trouble figuring out my colour season. I’m of Scandinavian descent so my skin is very light and the only thing I’m sure about is that I’m cool. My veins are very clearly blue and my lips have a purple tinge. In the light and dark scale I think I’m medium. I have the exact same shade of hair as the woman in the picture of Soft Summer and my skin is white like hers. I have light eyes, but they’re not blue, they’re greenish gray but not hazel where if you look closely you can see the colours the eyes are made up of, more of a greyish green, like green, grey and a tiny hint of brown have been almost completely mixed up into a grey mess. I was unsure because I interpreted saturated as having features close in depth which I don’t have. Since my hair is considerably darker than my eyes and skin I didn’t think I was muted, I thought I was medium here as well and it was hard to know whether I was a winter or a summer. When you said that saturated means that it’s hard to immediately tell the colour of the features it suddenly clicked that my eyes would mean that I was muted, so I’m pretty sure now that I’m a soft summer. Muted colours do look better than really bright colours on me, however some bright colours like a bright green make my eyes look strikingly green so I tend to gravitate towards them. I also think brighter blue and purple work quite well on me

Wow. There is more to this than just the four seasons. All this just went by my head because it was so fast. Just an intro. I still don't get "bright". I always thought I was a winter, then I was tested and they called me spring. I am not a spring. We all can wear all colors, it is the intensity and if the colors are yellow or blue based. I think this would make a big difference in selecting foundations and makeup. When trying on clothing, I put it up against my face and if I look washed out, it is not my shade but if it brightens my face, then it is my color.

@@overdatop5253 for other analysts, eye color isn't that important. It's mostly the reaction of your skin to the drapes/ colors. The hair color is used to determine your contrast levels. If you're cool toned, then you may be a summer.

Great video! I found myself thinking of my maternal grandmother during the True Autumn description--she had vivid auburn hair (in her younger years, obviously), turquoise blue eyes, and a fair complexion with golden undertones. My mother, in stark contrast to this, was a Dark Winter if ever there was, although she could pull from the True Winter palette without losing any credibility. (And then there's me, the Dark Autumn.) Thank you so much! P.S. I was also wondering how best one could express one's season and style via (for instance) scent. Perhaps a subject for another video?

There is an old book called “look like yourself and love it” by Jane Segerstrom. while it’s just a four type book, and it is out of date for many fragrances, it actually has a list of fragrances for each type. And she did have subtypes in each type in descriptions at the start of each section. She also talked about emotional use of color and using it for television work because she did some of that. The coolest thing that she had, that was different, was full color plates that you could use to create your own personal color palette by matching your hair, skin, eyes etc. to yourself, and cut them out and carry them with you. Personally, I’m not sure that the perfume guide was very helpful. I think that is still very individual but in a general, there is this idea that Personality is linked to appearance. A spring type would resonate with bright, clean, fresh, citrus-based fresh scents. And autumn type would do well in earthy, spicy or musky perfumes. A summer would blossom in floral fragrances. A winter would where classics like Chanel #5. David Zyla also wrote a color book and associates flowers to some of his types. No pictures, so there’s no real help in determining or color palette, but I remember that the one that seemed closest to me for a while with his jewel toned summer, a.k.a. Glamorous career girl, who is sexiest without any perfume at all, just the smell of soap. You have to wonder, where do these people get their ideas? 🤣 and yet… I honestly don’t prefer to wear perfume most of the time, though I used to be a Chanel #5 girl. These days, I’m more about using essential oils like peppermint and rosemary in the morning because it’s so refreshing and enlivening if I feel tired.
@AngryTheatreMaker

@@bitrudder3792 Segerstrom I'm not as familiar with, although I do remember both Suzanne Caygill and Carole Jackson saying similar things about fragrances for the seasons. I think Truth Is Beauty has tried to give fragrance recs for the various subtypes, though I'm not sure how complete that is. McJimsey and Caygill, if memory serves, both suggested flowers for the types they delineated--granted, you won't see that many people wearing corsages or buying bouquets in harmony with their essences or vibes. I do understand where you're coming from re perfume: I have a cat who is the apple of my eye, and one of my biggest concerns about spraying perfume around her is the effect it could have on her respiratory system. Not to mention I can't be bothered most days!
