Yeah glad you said the word “infinite”. Infinite possibilities, extremely mentally/computationally intensive. So many creative ideas linking to others, while others are being generated. 5:37 - huge, have to let the mind refresh and reshuffle everything you’ve queued up, then you somehow find ways through the impasse.

Great tips Danny. So simple but I think we easily forget stuff like removing distractions, turning your phone off, all these little things to help you get into the zone. That's always been the hardest thing for me. I can find the time, I can have the edit in my mind, I have all the shots I need, but it always takes me so long to get my brain into the headspace where I can enjoy the edit. I waste so much time thinking about how I'd rather be shooting, rather be lighting, rather be grading, all the stuff I really enjoy, when I'm actually just procrastinating and not doing the thing that I really just need to do: START THE DAMN EDIT!

Spot on about Pre-Production man. I’m not a “spontaneous” creative, and dedicating literally 75% of the total time of a project to Pre-Production has skyrocketed the types of content I can produce. Continue inspiring us Danny 🥲

Wow could not relate more to this video. Danny you articulated really well what the creative process is. I just finished editing a video for a client that I spent many hours on and I was feeling burnt out and what a breath of fresh air it was to watch this video and hear you say the same exact things I am going through! I especially like how you said there is an infinite amount of options in our storytelling when editing and an infinite amount of right answers. That does take the pressure off!

Kinda wish I had this video last week. I had a film project I was doing, and since I'm cheap and didn't learn how to use Premier Pro yet, I was using iMovie on my Mac. And oh boy, it was slow, and somewhat grueling, and just kind of sat in post-production hell. Thankfully, I have finished it, and the result is actually exactly what I wanted for my little project: A "so bad it's good" type film for my family. Thanks for all you do!

This short film was one of the most beautiful ones I’ve seen. The shots, music, sound design and of course the storytelling. I find it always hard to just start from an idea and build a whole story around it. Like here, Danny wanted to make a film about his dog, but how on earth do you make a good 20min film about your dog that has the audience hooked for the entire time and with a beautiful emotional touch? Not a lot of filmmakers are able to do this the way Danny does it, it all just feels perfect. I made a storytelling breakdown of the video because I wanted to better understand the choices Danny made to make the story so compelling. I did it simply by breaking the film down in what I felt were chapters, with their own vibe and purpose to drive the story forward, and I would like to share this. I don’t know if it’s exactly how Danny envisioned it, so I would be curious to hear from Danny how he broke his story down. Truly a masterpiece once again. Huge inspiration! Here is my breakdown: PART I: Who is Sanza? What makes her special? What are her characteristics? -> Interview Danny and Anna with archive footage of Sanza SET UP PART II: Planning trip. Where does “Labrador Retriever” come from? GOAL: Bringing Sanza to her home place Start trip (ferry) GOAL PART III: Why did Danny want a dog? Why Sanza? -> interview Danny with archive footage of Sanza -> archive montage when Sanza was a puppy => setting up connection between Danny and Sanza BACKSTORY (CONNECTION PAST) PART IV: First day in New Finland. Beauty shots Sanza and location.
-> Sanza finding her own way: She is home. Proud parents -> feels important to be there Danny asking Sanza if she already feels home, and telling her they aren’t exactly there yet. CONNECTION (PRESENT) PART V: Enjoying New Finland -> family time Beautiful montage (Danny, Anna and Sanza) BUILD UP TOWARDS GOAL PART VI: Fulfilling the real goal of the trip -> bringing Sanza home and make her swim in the labrador sea Meaning of this for Danny and Anna => Sanza helps them appreciate every moment and make them happy by simply be together FULLFILLING GOAL PART VII: What do dogs mean for us humans? What do they teach us? => live as hard as you can and appreciate every moment MEANING

Editing is such a battle at times. I don't have ADD but it feels like it when I edit. I can be all over the place. And that's usually because I didn't do enough pre-pro.
