Have met a girl in Slovakia, spent more than a week with her too. As a Slovene, the language is not that hard as it is a similar language, being Slavic. Yet some sounds are foreign for us, like your "d" or " t' ", the rest is pretty the same. Might be easier to learn Slovak for a foreigner than Slovene. Sure our alphabet is just 25 letters long, but we do use a lot more sounds which we don't write with á,ô,é and so on. You have to REMEMBER it as you learn the word :P An example: gori na gori gori (Up on the mountain a fire [is burning] ). If we were nice like Slovaks, we would write that as gôri na góri gorí :P Hehe

No, it would be much easier for you, because you already understand how the grammar of Slavic languages works. For an English speaker, that kind of grammar is completely foreign and extremely difficult. If you moved to Slovakia, as a Slovene you would be fluent in the language in less than a year.

I am a native English speaker and I’m thinking to learn a Slavic language one so when I want to learn othere Slavic languages it will help me understand Slavic language better, but which Slavic language is the base Slavic language I can’t make my mind up between polish and Russian? I mean I finish romance and Germanic languages a lot faster to learn because English is my base language even with me being monolingual, so I like to learn language that will take longer and harder to learn before learning the ones that will take quicker to learn.

I'm English and my girlfriend is Slovakian. I've been up High Tatras and eaten Halushki. I know that's not spelt correctly. Wow is the language tough to learn.

an example. the Slovaks lived next to the Hungarians for centuries and even now. (Because the territory of today's Slovakia was an integral part of the Kingdom of Hungary for 1000 years.) Slovak is a Slavic language. Hungarian is not Slavic. The Slovak language is based on the Hungarian language! Ice cream in Slovak: zmrzlina. I always laughed at this because it's hard to pronounce because of the many vowels. Then I found out that the Slovaks created it from the Hungarian word "zúzmara". (Zúzmara=Rime (English)
