im thinking of starting a lego city with my daughter, we will be starting with absolutely nothing as we have only got star wars sets, our plan is to start our own little channel and share our progress with those who wish to join us, it will be a slow process, we are in the process of saving to get some base plates and a couple sets for our first builds. these tips will be great for us beginners so thank you.

Andrew Thornton Hi! It’s so great to hear from you and that’s very exciting about starting your city!! You will have hours of fun and laughs and bonding. I’d love to follow along as your city grows and I’m glad that you found my tips helpful. The biggest tip I can say is let your imagination go and just have fun with your daughter! Best wishes to you both and I can’t wait to see what you create. 🙂

@@DrMcBrick awesome, thank you so much, if all goes to plan we are hoping to have some videos up in the next few months, shes just started school so ill let her settle in plus it gives me time to get some parts together and maybe pick up a couple sets for unboxings, shes very excited and wishes we could start now but as i told her we have absolutely nothing and need to buy it all from base plates to everything in between

This is an interesting video. I found the tips very helpful, not only for Lego content creation, but for other types of content. One thing I like about content creators is when the channel has a story, some real life thrown in and kept to the content genre, or related things such as your tables and info about those. Having a confident voice speaking clearly with good audio and good lighting in the video keeps me coming back. Imagine if the 14K views this video received were also subs, to be real, I'm surprised your sub count is only 1300. Keep creating vids and I'll keep watching. Thanks for what you do.

I realize you posted this over a year ago but I am a more recent subscriber. Just wanted to let you know how helpful I found it. Mostly I build individual sets and have some planned ideas on city designs I’d like to do someday-like a stripe mall I’m still trying to get enough sets for, using a combo of Oxford Blocks and LEGO sets (although it’s harder to find good one story type store sets in LEGO). I like how your tutorial emphasizes incorporating personal creativity, for example, including that outhouse! Absolutely brilliant idea in terms of adding whimsical humor to your city.

It's kind of odd to be an adult and design stuff in Lego, but once you tried it, you'll sure love it! Building my Lego city has for sure taken some time and money, but I really do love it and spending time with your kids building and playing and goofing around makes it very special. Good video! Everyone should build their own Lego city. Be a kid again, no regrets!

Lasse Eriksson I completely agree that it really is “good for the soul” in a lot of ways. Our family has always bonded over building and creating with Lego and, to this day, even my older kids (now 21,25, & 27) still bring up that those were the best times when they were little. I just look at it as another medium in which to work...like paint or clay...it’s just plastic bricks. Expensive plastic bricks nonetheless lol. I’m glad you enjoy the channel!

Fantastic tips! I couldn't agree more on the ones you shared. One tip I'd like to add, and this is from experience, if you want to "redo" your city, KEEP YOUR BUILDINGS INTACT! The idea of a 100% custom city is noble and can be done, but it can also be a daunting endevour when approaching it from scratch. My piggyback tip would be, replace a building with a custom building one at a time. Although, our Demolition Days were alot of fun. =) Again, great video! Til next time, Keep Brickin!

This is by far one of the best tip videos for a newbie like me. I am in the early planning stage of begging a city with my grandson. One question: are your road plates 3rd party plates? If so, which brand did you select?
@DrMcBrick
@DrMcBrick 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I. Glad you got something out of it. I wish you the best of luck building your layout and I encourage you to shoot some video and share it. 😀 I made my own road plates. There’s a tutorial somewhere on my channel that I made that shows you how to make them if you’re interested. I like them because I can control the plate real estate, the sizes, and the colors. The asphalt look with yellow lines really pops too I think.

Nice video. My city is on the floor in my basement but it is built on wood so my city is actually on a hard surface. The only thing I wish I had done was plan the size of the wood correctly I over corrected on modulars because I thought they were 15 inches and not 10 inches.

Not enough room? Build your Lego city vertically. That makes it hard to get train tracks in there, but everything else should work.
@DrMcBrick
@DrMcBrick 3 жыл бұрын
It certainly makes it more difficult to go vertical. I've seen some very creative cities that have their train tracks on higher levels...shelves, raised platforms, etc... Now going up or down levels with tracks is VERY difficult and becomes more of a rollercoaster than anything else lol. I've seen a few people do it but the slopes up/down are very subtle and switch back frequently.

Hi, as a slightly older child , I’m just getting my first Lego this year, always wanted a train set and have ordered some basic Lego as well. What size were the IKEA tables you use please ? Also when you say 32 x32 is that the number of studs to a plate or the size in inches ? Many thanks for showing your city and tips Best wishes Deric

Hi Deric, best wishes on your new Lego and train building. The tables I use or Ikea Linamon 24” by 39.5”. The base plates are measured in actual studs on the plate. If you measure everything in studs then the measurements for Lego are universal 😀.

@DrMcBrick
@DrMcBrick 4 жыл бұрын
Imperialofficer07 Bot sure what you mean by how do I plan them... basically I use a 6 stud wide standard dark gray tile any size brick depending on what pattern i want, then a 2x2 light bluish gray tile as the curb between the road and sidewalk. In terms of planning...I build or place MOCs/sets then build the sidewalks around or out from the structure. I hope this answers your question.
