For the squirrels and chipmunks digging up crops i went to Walmart found the cheapest biggest jar of red pepper flakes. Sprinkled heavily on my beds and around plants. Had to do it twice due to rain, but haven't had a problem with them the rest of the season. They don't like hot peppers

My carrots are up. 2-4x8 beds. I used white plastic to lay over the beds, after I planted and watered. Keeps them moist from condensation but you have to check every day, after about the 6th day to see if there are ANY, sprouting, if so then I take off the plastic and keep them watered, as they all sprout. Have used brown shipping paper, card board, and just kept those wet, it works too.

Well, the old goat is hanging out in the pumpkin patch bounty behind Mama Hoss on the bottom shelf. I'm starting some carrots in my fabric pots that I used earlier in the summer for my potatoes. Soil is all peat based potting mix and I will top off with some compost mixed in (we needed a lot of compost this past year to supplement the raised beds, so I bought 2 of the cubic yard bags of Soil3 from Super Sod on early 2023 sale, and I have some left over). I also like to mix in a little triple-12 fertilizer with a custom blend of micro-nutrients I make. Our fabric bags are 15 gallon. I have 2 bags that have a volunteer 2nd crop of potatoes in them (guess we missed a small one or two?). But I have 10 bags overall I can dedicate to carrots to over winter. Will be top watering but may put on drip once they are up (the main line runs beside the platform the bags are on, but I did not have the potatoes on drip). I have a Dramm mister head I bought from you a while back that I will use to water the seeds/seedlings with. I'm in 8A, McDonough, GA so overwintering carrots should not be a problem unless we have another really weird weather winter (but who knows....)

Carrots grow better in plastic pots imo and experience. They need tons more water than instructed especially before the greens can provide shade and water retention, depending on your rainfalls of course. Screened soil. Bonemeal and high water soluble nitrogen to get the greens going. My 2 cents of successful growing in spring/summer after trying everything! Danvers carrots most successful for my zone 7. Not sure if fish emulsion helped or not.
