For my Brooder, I use 100w Ceramic Heat Lamp and Non-Slip Gray Grip Liner for the flooring . I haven't had any issues and I have been doing this for two yrs.

@@MyshireFarm when I use the black floor grips, they are almost like the kids puzzle mats. I get mine at Harbor Freight. They’re fantastic both on the floor for your feet but also your little two legged little ones

I use silicon steamer liner for the bottom of the incubator during hatching. I use the ceramic reptile bulbs to heat the brooder and the blue paper towels or viva cloth style, depending on what’s at hand, and change as needed. We used to use the quail tops on mason jars, but they tend to creat a vacuum and not let the water out, so we changed to just chick water tops with rocks. At one week old we switch to fir shavings. After 5 days old, We cover chick feeders with 1/4 hardware cloth pieces attached with zipties to prevent chicks crawling into feeders. For feed we use gamebird chick starter crumble that we sift out the fines to feed them for the first few days. Then we use crumbles after day 15. Finally we switch to feather fixer at 4-6 weeks old. We developed this method based on your recommendations and what’s available here. Except for the ceramic bulb….this is because the brooder is in our living space and heat lamps with heat light bulbs caused sleeping issues. I’ll pick up a new backup thermometer/hydrometer based on your recommendation. Thank you for all the help you give this community.

Thank you, Zack! I watched 2 playlist from start to finish. We have raised quail before for our family to eat. Now is a totally different scenario. My husband is retired and I am almost retired at 67, I do work a couple of days a week cooking for the elderly. Needing something to do, wanting to be more self-reliant, and loving quail in general, this is the direction I am going to take and if we can make some money along the way to help out, great! So as soon as I can wrap my hands around everything I need, starting from scratch, I am going to start at the top, which I feel is ordering quail from you guys. I hate poop trays! What I do is split an empty feed bag lengthwise and hang it under the cages at an angle. This way (most of) the poop lands on the bag and rolls down and into a bucket. it's not perfect, but usually just brushing anything sticky (once dry) down the "chute" is enough to remedy things. I change the feed bags when they get too mucked up to work. And hey, it's recycling!

U might consider the govee temp & humidity monitor that is WIFI driven instead of bluetooth. This will send u alerts when temp & humidity is out of YOUR range. Its more $ but it will send u a text when it is out of range

Three weeks take them off heat and if they are going outside leave them in brooder for 3-4 days without heat before moving them outside of moving them inside then you can move right away

Yes. You’ll want a higher protein crumble. If you have access to Tractor Supply, they have a gamebird starter that would work better than chicken scratch.

Yeah if you are wanting max weight I would do a turkey or pheasant but they will eat what you have. The starter is more important than the layer IMO.

QUESTION: I don’t think this question has anything to do with splay leg, but I found a Q chick dead today... lying flat on its back. They’ve been in the brooder since Saturday morning (almost 5 days) and had seemed to be happy and doing well (with miracle water and starter feed). We’re wondering if it was because I had been grinding up their starter feed in a coffee grinder and maybe it was so finely ground that it ate too much??? Could it be the bleach or other chemicals in the white paper towels (NEXT TIME, we will use the blue automotive paper towels). Well, tonight, every time I go back into the room to check on the brooder... another one is lying on its back, too. It’s always near the heat source in this old galvanized brooder. It’s about 90-degrees inside. When I nudge it, each time, it jumps up... runs around... gets a sip of water or runs to nibble on some food. Note: I did replace all ground up food this evening with the normal gamebird starter crumbles (we don’t have access to the pheasant starter where we are). What might be the reason that these baby chicks would lie down on their back? Please advise.

You guys are amazing but I apparently am not. I am completely defeated for now. Been hatching my own eggs for a half year. Ordered 50 eggs to upgrade to jumbos had a bad hatch rate assumed my fault and you guys were amazing and sent another set of eggs. i had 22 hatch out of 50 but literally had chicks dying left and right. I only have 4 left. I have no idea why but am sure it was my fault somehow. I am giving up for now going to save till spring buy upgraded gear and try again.
