@@susanjaneterry1073 Thank you Susan. I am also a fan of Azamara: I have done three Azamara cruises previously and have a Spain-intensive cruise booked with them this coming September. I have also tried Oceania (once) and there were two things I didn't like about it: 1) the other passengers (perhaps we were unlucky, there were a lot of noisy shouty New Yorkers on board.) and 2) the food. Oceania makes a great thing of its food, but we felt rushed in the restaurants. In Jacques "French" restaurant they wanted the table back after 90 minutes, nothing very French about that. The food was a theme-park interpretation of French cuisine, including soupe à l'oignon served with a giant wholemeal (!) crouton.

When I first tried Viking Ocean, it was a revelation. No kids, no casino, no nickel and dime, no photo... I liked the design, the quiet ambiance, the high quality of food and it reconnected me to destinations (Iceland was a dream everyday onboard Viking Jupiter). It may not meet everyone expectations, true... but it meets mine and my partner for sure.

I believe you articulated it very well as to the pros and cons for those on a Viking cruise. My Wife and I have taken three River Cruises and will take our first Ocean Cruise in the Med later this year. We find that Viking is exactly what we want in a cruise. Its all about the destination and it's history for us. If you want casinos and cabaret style shows, etc. then Viking is NOT for you. If you want a sophisticated yet laid back atmosphere, combined with fantastic dining and a crew that excels at customer service, then you are one of the many who return over and over.

The Viking Experience (5 River, 3 Ocean, + 2 Ocean already booked) is unique. I have been on 2 Other Ocean cruises with others, and don’t care about the gambling and other distractions that others may like. The fact that you noted that you learned more on a Viking Cruise on your journey than you did on other cruises combined reinforced why my wife and I are repeat customers to Viking. It’s about the depth of the experience and in particular when you can purchase the optional excursions like eBiking in the Black Forest or standing on the roof of the cathedral in Cologne…or just hang out on the ship as it cruises. The shared experiences, and opportunity to meet fascinating fellow travelers from elsewhere, and have the shared experiences together make Viking unique. Viking isn’t for everyone, but in a sense, that’s a good thing and be thankful for free enterprise and innovation to provide choices. Gary- very much enjoy your reviews of all cruises! Keep up the good work.

We treated the included tours as orientation tours of the cities we visited. At the end of each included tour, we stayed in the cities instead of returning to the ship. We just took a Viking Octantis cruise to Antarctica. The expedition style ship was just the right size. Not surprisingly, there were very limited excursions (one per day and maybe a kayak or "special ops" boat). Different than the other cruises we've taken, but outstanding in every way. I have been on four Viking cruises. Having discovered how amazing they are I would never consider any other line. I love the décor, I love the lack of formality, I love the peace and quiet. I don't want casinos, or raucous shows, or children's entertainment - I could go to any kiss-me-quick, candy-floss, English seaside resort for that. I don't want to be forced to dress up in a Dinner Jacket once or twice a week, or dress up in fancy dress - I just want to enjoy a quiet meal with my wife in beautiful surroundings. I don't want to spend my entire holiday having to dodge pushy sales people trying to sell me photographs or some speciality meal - I want to know what my cruise is going to cost before I go on it and have no extras whatsoever. So is it perfect? Not quite. The biggest problem is Viking's total fixation with 'culture'. My wife and I love Nature, not cities, so that is a limitation. It is a great shame as they could easily have a nature-based alternative free outing at every port. [They will be providing Nature-based tours as standard on their new Expedition ships, but they really are expensive - very, very expensive.]

Our trip toAntarctica on a Viking expedition ship was amazing. We even got to take a dive in a 6 person submarine. Watched the albatross glide along the wake of the ship, Got to mingle with thousands of penguins. Watched humpback whales diving and breaching. Next FEbruary we’re taking Viking to Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania. It won’t be an expedition ship so will be a bit larger but still no casinos, no children, inclusive dining, some interesting speakers talking about our destinations, history and nature. We use our 401K money to fund it. We have to take out an annual amount every year so we use it for travel.

Thank you for a very informative video We've done two river cruises with Viking and loved every minute of them both. Taking the leap to an ocean cruise in 2025. We are both in our late 60s and Viking is a good fit for us. Seemless travel and basically worry free. It was a joy not to have to put up with inebriated passengers throwing beer bottles off the side of the ship. Most travelers were in our age group so there was a common ground in terms of life experiences. It was nice to travel with passengers who could name all four Beatles, who remembered where they were when JFK was assinated and who sat riveted to the TV to watch a man walk on the moon A great experience!

I believe you are incorrect in one statement…Viking does, indeed, work with travel agents. My cousin is a long time travel agent and she arranged our first Viking cruise (river/Grand European tour, Budapest to Amsterdam) back in 2014. We loved it so much we ventured to ocean cruises with Viking in 2019. We took the Grand Mediterranean (correct name?), beginning in Barcelona and ending in Venice. These were truly the most memorable and wonderful trips I’d ever taken. This fall of 2022, we will be exploring Greece with a stop in Turkey, and I can’t wait! Lastly, we booked another cruise at the time we booked Greece…Norway and the British Isles which will be in May 2023! These just might be our last “organized” cruises as I’ll be celebrating my 71st birthday in Greece, and mobility is definitely slowing down a bit. Yes, granted, Viking is expensive, however the destination, the new ships, the food and the wonderful crew are second-to-none. We worked hard our entire lives, and exploring this beautiful planet doesn’t get any more fantastic than doing so with Viking.

Gary, we have sailed on Viking Ocean twice and have another cruise with them set for 2023. Every one of them was arranged through our travel agent. Though customers can work directly with Viking, it is not correct to say that they must deal only by phone. Also, we found the included shore excursions generally well done, but we’re free to select other options that suit our preferences. We did not feel managed in any way. We have been loyal Holland America guests, but as they divested of their smaller, more intimate ships, we found Viking as a very attractive alternative. In fact, many of the crew members we met on Viking had worked for HAL, and say they are happier on Viking, and when you consider all the included amenities, the prices are not really that much more, and you don’t have the constant annoyance of being sold something. Viking deserves a better review than you gave them.

A couple of other “cons”I will mention is the “included air”, at least from the US, can be very difficult as far as connections are concerned. Those that wish Business Class can also be shocked by Vikings pricing. Also many clients do not like to pay in full at the time of booking which can also be over a year. or more in advance. The thing I like about Viking that you didn't touch on is the complete lack of high pressure upselling you get on other lines. No photos and art sales, it really annoys me when the supposed "activities" on some ships are just a sales pitch to sell jewelry or other merchandise. Also because all the food venues are included they are all of the same extremely high quality. On our first (and last) cruise we took on Norwegian, the main dining quality was so poor we were forced to buy our food at the specialty restaurants. Even the future cruise we purchased was low pressure, makes other cruises feel like a timeshare sales pitch. Just got off of the Viking Mediterranean Odyssey and I will be hard pressed to ever cruise a big ship again.

This is a great overview to insure one matches the right cruise line for their expectations. We choose Celebrity, Holland America, RC and Norwegian knowing we can participate in that style of cruise vs Viking where we go specifically to learn about history, local cuisine and culture with an educated guide. The river cruise was certainly different for us but still had a great time. We saw and experienced things that will stay with us forever. We expect the same on our upcoming Med cruise with Viking this December. BTW we love the Viking decor specifically because it isn’t over the top. It’s a clean looking, very comfortable and bright experience.

We have done five Viking cruises (3 river and 2 ocean) and have one each booked, and we really appreciate how Viking takes care of us. The airport greeters and/or baggage handlers are extremely helpful, and the transfers between airports and ships or hotels are rapid and convenient. We are all about the destinations, and Viking has some excellent tour offerings. There are usually three or more extra-cost tours besides the included tour in a port. There are scheduling issues; IIRC eleven excursions are offered in Ketchikan, Alaska but they are ALL in the morning, so only one is possible. All of our tours have had local guides contracted or employed by Viking. We've experienced Viking's high level of service in China and Egypt as well as Western Europe. We also take advantage of cruise extensions, usually two nights in a hotel just before or after boarding the ship. One land-based extension in Jordan was especially memorable. It was 4 days/3 nights, visiting Amman, Petra, Madaba, and the Roman ruins of Jerash. One area for improvement would be more specialty dining venues.

Thanks Gary, this reinforced all the things I value about Viking - including the fact that I see the absence of a Casino and glitzy shows as a positive as that simply isn't what I want on a holiday. I think your value assessment is fair, especially for a couple that both likes to have a drink with meals the difference between Viking and mass-market lines starts to shrink. Add in the cost of Wifi, excursions, specialty dining, and I found that on a per night basis The Haven on NCL, for example, was more expensive than Viking.

My wife and I are booked on the Into the Midnight Sun cruise from London to Bergen, Norway in June in an Explorer Suite. We booked the cabin through a travel agent and I booked our own airfare and transfers much less expensive than Viking. We'll be in a private car vs. a big bus. Given that it's 900+ passengers vs. 5000, we don't have a high expectation for the evening shows. We aren't looking for a casino, waterslide or go karts and especially kids. There usually is a good variety of shore excursions but most do go on the one that is included. I agree that it is an expensive line to travel, we find that all the pluses are worth the extra money.

I LOVE Viking!! . As a solo Viking traveler, I've cruised once to Mexico ports. And now I have booked a transatlantic in December. I have found their sale prices competitive for solo travelers. Their food is superior to all cruise lines I've been on (and I cruise every two months). The service is impeccable. The decor is definitely not Ikea but best compared with "Design within Reach" for style and luxury. The inclusion of a complimentary excursion in each port does save money, as does the included Wi-Fi. I enjoyed the lectures and the emphasis on history and art. On my cruise, a 3-D theater with various offerings was exciting and fun. The other passengers were diverse and more refined. It is not for everyone, but I loved the experience. Also, their midnight pea soup (grandmother's recipe) is delicious.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. However, we are going on our first Viking River and Ocean Cruises this year to Europe and New England and find that they have many options to choose from for their excursions rather than the same as you imply. I agree that we will do most of the included excursions, but for example, on the Grand European Tour cruise, there are many additional excursions we are choosing which also increases the price significantly which was a surprise. Some of the included excursions are only 1.5 or 2 hours which doesn't seem like enough at many of these ports. Love your videos and are looking forward to our cruises.

I agree about the excursions. Watching the video I was thinking he must be talking about a different cruise line, as our experience on Viking was that there were MANY options in each port. I actually had to pull out the documents from our last cruise to confirm, and sure enough there were lots other choices in addition to the 'included' excursion. In fact, in some ports there were so many choices that they sometime couldn't get enough people for a particular one and had to cancel it.

Thank for the factual review. We experienced their Rhine River cruise and experienced everything that you described. If someone wishes to learn from talented and knowledgeable guides, with excellent coordination of activities then Viking is the one to provide that. If one wants to party then I would recommend that they choose a different cruise line.

All of your videos have a delightful perspective! With Viking, it's as if Torstein Hagen saw my "wish list" for everything I want & expect in a cruise line. Four of my six Viking cruises have been as a solo traveler. There have been hosted cocktail parties & dinners with the cruise staff for us solos. Crew members who I sailed with in 2019 remembered my preferences when I came back this past summer for the Bermuda season. My favorite itineraries are the 14 night trans-Atlantic crossings(just booked another on Viking Neptune for December). All those sea days to enjoy the beauty, comfort, & calm of a Viking ship! Can't wait to try Saga. Hopefully they will allow United States Citizens to sail with them.

Thank you so much for this. Viking hit my radar last year when I saw one of their ships on a cruise doc. Initally, it was the interior design that caught my eye as so many other lines have rather gaudy ships. Almost all of the possible criticisms you mentioned are actually huge positives for me. The only potentially disappointing thing is the lack of variety in the shore excurions. Everything else looks very appealing. Curious to see how Oceania compares. Thanks again!!

I think Gary is talking about the included (free) shore excursions. Yes, they are mostly walking or bus tours to get you acclimated to the area. The "extra" excursions are so much fun and varied it's hard to choose which one to try.

I LOVE Viking. Of the 30+ cruises I've taken, Viking, by far, is my favorite. I will be taking my third to Hawaii in December from LA. I do love their all-inclusive package, including excursions, gratuities, and specialty dining. I only pay for their Silver Drink package. Also, I like that all ships are the same, so there is no additional time spent finding the restaurants, theaters, or services. As far as the decor is concerned, it is very stylish. I would compare it to Design Within Reach rather than Ikea. After all, reindeer throws are found in public places. Also, their pea soup, served after 10pm, is the best.

People who choose to go on a Viking cruise know EXACTLY what they’re getting. The website shows all the available shore excursions-included and “premium”-so anyone “surprised” or “disappointed” with what they offer is like a person disappointed with what they made themself for lunch. If the excursions aren’t “good” enough, don’t book! Also, the VAST majority of passengers are 55 years and older. I’m usually one of the younger whippersnappers on board and I started cruising 4 1/2 years ago at age 58. My guess is the passengers know their SCUBA and snorkeling days are nearing the end. Some of the shore excursions are immersive and extensive enough to last literally all day. I know that my wife and I come back from them absolutely physically spent. In short, Viking isn’t for everyone. And I am very thankful for that!

I would like to travel on Viking based on what you said, because I don’t need a casino and high entertainment. I prefer learning and excursions. I don’t need everything planned for me but I do like the Norwegian decorations that it is not overly bright colors and glittery. However. As I mostly travel solo it is hard to justify paying twice when I don’t eat twice as much and don’t do twice as much excursions. I wish Viking would have solo cabins or a bigger discount. I really like the learning idea focus anf the cooking classes and that there can’t be anyone under 18.

We are on week 2 of our first Viking cruise, doing the Eastern Mediterranean. Overall we are pleased with our experience but there are a few disappointments that we did fully appreciate while doing our research. On the positive side, the ship is just the right size. This makes embarkation and shore excursions way easier. We really enjoy the elegant design of the ship and the Scandinavian touches. Our itinerary has lots of excellent, well-chosen sites and likely because of the smaller ship size, we can dock at a pier and not use tenders. For some excursions, we just step off the ship and the buses are right there. The staff are excellent and attentive, although no more so than other cruises we have done (Azamara, Celebrity). The state room is no larger than we had on other cruises. We have a veranda which I would strongly recommend. The room has two small "bucket" chairs that are not much use except for briefly sitting in. We prefer the couch we had on our Azamara cruise. It was nice to stretch out on. The bed is very firm and has a ridge in the middle since it is two twins pushed together. We don't much like the European style pillows that are not unlike sandbags. We also don't like duvets. Being Canadian, unless the temperature is -10 or so, we don't use heavy blankets. Our stateroom attendant could not find any other blankets other than several throw blankets. These are minor complaints though. The food is generally good but not outstanding except for the Italian meals at Manfredi's. The Captain's Table has been a real disappointment. The "California" experience was a thin, tasteless, over-cooked piece of halibut. We come from the West Coast of Canada and halibut in season is a delicious wonderful thing. The attempt at a traditional Norwegian dinner was a complete failure, and I think many people felt the same way. The "Restaurant" has been consistently good with mainstream offerings like Steak Diane, salmon in puff pastry, a fairly ho-hum chicken offering, etc. High tea in the Winter Garden was also disappointing. The bread was starting to get slightly stale, and the range of items was limited - a cucumber, tuna, and some sort of oniony thing. Tea was good though - loose leaf Ceylon and Darjeeling. Another minor annoyance is the lack of variety of canapes in the "Living Room". We enjoy having a before dinner drink there but can't face the same tasteless appetizers day after day. It would be nice to have cheese as a before dinner option with our drinks but this has never been available. The food on Azamara had more variety and was more interesting. The bar service is also disappointing. The cocktail options are fairly limited. Again on our Azamara cruise, they went to some effort to create interesting drinks. The range of liquor is also a bit limited. The wine list for the Silver Package is a bit heavy on Spanish and French wines, with only one Californian Zinfandel. There is only one Cabernet Sauvignon, from South Africa. I did enjoy their offering of Armagnac, and they have some ridiculously expensive ones if you want to splurge. We are about 10 years younger than the average age of our cruise mates - likely mid 70s. One has to be a bit patient on excursions since we go at the pace of the slowest member. You might get the impression from the videos and brochures that a Viking cruise will have more active, fit seniors. This was not generally our experience. Overall there is lots to be positive about, but if you are a "foody" and enjoy craft cocktails you might want to manage your expectations.

I took this exact same Viking cruise in August, 2023. My experience was quite a bit different. I traveled solo and did end up meeting some great new friends. One couple who I have already visited from Georgia, and another that I will be visiting in England July of this year. I had selected this cruise for two major reasons. First, the ports of call. Many were places I had heard about and really wanted to see. The second reason was that this was an adult only ship, no big shopping areas, nothing flashy or irritating to the senses. That being said, it was so low key on-board I found it to appear to be empty most of the time. I would come back from an excursion, (many which were not very interesting), rest a bit, dress for the evening and wander around the ship looking for something fun to do and meet new people. The main bar, the Exployers Lounge, is at the bow of the ship; great view. I would enter there around 6 pm and was lucky to find more than a dozen people there, especially the first few evenings. Each of the lounge areas had scheduled entertainers; the best being a solo guitarist. Sometimes is was a classical pianist or the two ladies playing Chello and Violin. After a couple cocktails, (it does pay to get the Silver Beverage Package), I would wander to the bar at the main atrium. Again, lucky to find another dozen people there. I should state at this point that there was a little over 900 passengers on the ship. The walk in between those lounges I passed a three floor open atrium with plenty of seating. I never once saw any large groups gathered to socialize or play games. Day or evening. The two main restaurants is were you would find your fellow shipmates. The smorgasbord restaurant was a great place for a breakfast or lunch, as it also had outside tables. The main restaurant was a bit more formal. Unfortunately the menus didn't change that much for either place. The food quality just wasn't up to nearly the same level as provided on the river cruises. Of course the river cruises were only feeding about 160 passengers. That was the biggest disappointment of the ship. I really didn't look forward to on-board meals. And because our ship was never in a port overnight, you didn't have the option to dine in one of the ports. My second disappointment was the time you had in each port. Tour departure times were mostly at 9 am, yet sometimes the ship had to be on its way as early as 3 pm. Often departures were before 5:30. You just get a brief taste of where you were. All included tours ended up with a 45 minute "time on your own" before getting back on the bus that will take you back to your ship. So if you didn't hoof it, you were not going to see very much. Most of the included tours were not very interesting. The additional tour were often very expensive, but would last 5 to 6 hours. If your ship was actually docked and you were within a short walking distance to the town, my advice would be to forget the tour and start roaming around on your own. Unfortunately there were only two locations were that was possible. Most other docks were commercial docks where it was unpratical to walk to where the main roads are. Plus it was August in the Mediterranean. If the ship had to drop anchor because there are no suitable docks, you are completely dependent on taking a shuttle boat, (a ship lifeboat), back and forth. My last peave was the nightclub. Most every night it has the ship band playing 80's and 90's covers, which was fine, but the bar only had 8 stools. The chairs at the cocktail tables were so oversize that it was almost impossible to walk to and from your table or to the dance floor. That lounge venue was way too small. I saw many people peek into the club and back out because it was way too crowded a space. Poor planning design wise. Admittedly I did not participate in the daily informational talks, the evening entertainment shows or use the pool, (I burn and the roof was always open). Yet, I know I would dislike being on a ship with 3000 to 6000 of my closest complete strangers with little kids running around, except in a casino, (which I also do not have an interest in), or a bar. So would I do another Viking Sea Cruise? No way. In the future I'll stick to the river cruises where I can plan my own day, where the boat has many overnight stops where I can experience the local fare and nightlife if so motivated, and not have to race back to the ship in the mid-afternoon.

Constantly had people trying to get on our bus because they were lined up together. I agree there were too many people on the same excursions. It got confusing. And i noticed some of the people with walkers signed-up for moderate walking tours. There was no one to help them as the bus driver rarely stuck around and the tour guides did not seem to take notice. I helped a couple ladies get back to the bus myself.

We got very close to booking a Viking cruise to South America because we like the look of the quality and the Scandanavian style. The thing that stopped us from booking was their demand that we pay the whole cost of the cruise 18 months before it was due to depart. My husband and I took our first Viking ocean cruise pre-covid, which included stops in Bermuda, the West Indies and Puerto Rico. Very enjoyable. Compared to other lines we've traveled on (Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity), Viking was exactly what we needed at the time. We're past the enormous crowds, flashy entertainment, casinos, party atmosphere, overtired kiddos, snarky teens, and non-stop sensory stimulation. Disney did an excellent job entertaining our young family, Royal Caribbean was perfect for a 14-person family celebration for my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary, Celebrity allowed us to spend 4 out of 10 days in the same port in Bermuda which was heavenly as newly-minted empty nesters, and our first Viking cruise prior to the Pandemic was gloriously relaxing. Unfortunately for Carnival, it's reputation as a party ship went as well as expected, but our family can say we've seen the Western Caribbean. :) Viking was hassle free, customer service oriented, offered wonderful ports of call, enough excursions to satisfy our liking, and just a great atmosphere for traveling. We'll be on Viking again this year for a transatlantic crossing.

I've never been on a cruise but I watch your videos with great interest. I feel like as an introvert and history nerd, this would be right up my alley. I've always thought the main advantage of cruises is that you travel to a bunch of different places, like a tour, but once you are settled in your cabin you don't have to pack/unpack/pack/unpack like on a tour. I'm not a foodie and I don't care about partying. But I probably won't go on a cruise until I find a line that doesn't charge a penalty as a solo traveler. I'd rather just fly somewhere and take trains around (in Europe at least).

IKEA-like? well that's a plus for me! I adore the Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic.... I find it very calming and relaxing. Standard cruise ships with their zillion colors and patterns, and 10 things happening at once in every square inch of the ship at every minute is overwhelming chaos to me. I'm way more interested in the cultural experience, and learning the history and detail about each destination. The nice thing with Viking if you ever do take a 2nd trip with them on an ocean ship, is that you already know where everything is located. Last year when I boarded the ship, there were a lot of people wandering around touring the ship because it was new to them. I already knew I wanted to spend a lot of time in the spa, and my father knew that he wanted to spend time at the main pool. Once we got to our room, we unpacked a few things and instantly went to those locations. I was the only person using the thermal spa the first day when I went, but I saw a lot of people taking tours of it who were surprised about what they could do there.

This was a great insight to Viking. I've never sailed with them, but do sometimes get annoyed when some of the bigger cruise lines don't really talk much about the destination, but do talk about getting you back onboard to keep spending your money. My cruise last week with P&O didn't have a single lecture/event about the destinations we were visiting, which I felt was a real shame!

Basically, their cruises are exceptionally well organised. My wife, daughter and I went on the second Viking Sky cruise ever, long before the unfortunate incident with the engines. My daughter and now her husband are flying with them to New York in September and then on a cruise to he Arctic or somewhere very much North. As a family we don’t do noisy cruises infested with children and love the educational and historical aspect of destinations. We have zero issues with the decor, the quality of the ships or the superb service provided by the ship’s crew. For us it is worth the premium cost of Viking cruises.

The main thing I always remember about Viking, working harbour security and handling a lot of turnarounds for Viking vessels, is that they give passengers wet wipes in little foil packets that always set off our metal detectors. Top tip: after checking in, put the wet wipe packet in the tray going through the X-ray rather than stuffing it in a pocket. :-D On a side note, do you ever go on any cruises to the Baltic?

The overall selling point of Viking - and possibly unique to Viking - is offering the river boat experience on an ocean trip. I find that _very_ compelling. For those out there that prefer river boating, this is a great way to expand to other shores. If you like such trips, the next step might be the new Ulstein CX103 ocean vessels from groups like Vantage, American Queen (née Victory), Aurora, and Albatros - only about 160 passengers. Same as a riverboat!

About to embark on my 4th Viking cruise, they are as you explained over the top with service and the food is over the moon. My brother and I did the Amazon trip it was fantastic and crew were on the spot at each port going up the river. A life’s experience to say the least when we were in Manouse we toured the opera house, they were rehearsing for a performance, it was like a Hollywood-movie set. Upon exiting down the staircase a lone violin was playing, dressed in full tux playing a tape of orchestra accompaniment he playing the solo enough for tears . Viking gives you much to reflect on not to mention the wonderful people you meet as fellow travelers.

Thank you, this is very helpful. We are going on our first Viking cruise in the fall and I think it is going to suit us very well. We will enjoy the destination immersion and fine dining and have no need for a casino or big production entertainment. I like the look of the ships too. Some of the other lines seem a little gaudy to me.

I can honestly say that I was dead set against Viking in the beginning as I tend to be more of a “traditional cruiser”but after watching some of your insight and feedback (as well from another cruise channel) I think I will book Viking for one of my next upcoming cruises just to experience it firsthand.
