Just got back from an 11 day Iberian cruise on Neue Statendam and was my first ever cruise, it was amazing. We started in Copenhagen Denmark on September 3 and then boarded the ship on 9/6. We had sea day on 9/7 and then Dover England on 9/8. 2 more sea days and then Sept 11 in Porto Portugal, Sept 12 in Lisbon and then Sept 13 in Cadiz Spain. Finally Barcelona on 9/15 after a sea day and then off boarded in Civicchetiva (Rome) Italy and went straight to the airport because my flight was at 1:15pm back to SFO. I barely got to see Italy that day but at least we did the other countries and was pretty amazed. My favorite spot on the ship is the Rolling Stone Rock Room where I got to see an amazing British rock group 3 times on the cruise, being a rock guitarist myself I totally enjoyed that. Also loved the BB King Blues bar venue. I also had to do the art auction and bid on and won a magnificent art piece by Alexander Chen called Manhattan Celebration. (Old World Trade Center background with the Statue of Liberty in the foreground on 4th of July). My cabin was an inside room up on the 6th deck and we had 2 dressy nights in the formal dining room on this cruise. The only bad part is that it went by so fast and I gained a couple pounds from all the food I ate in the Lido market 😂😂. A fabulous Cruise and the countries we went to were amazing. Just wish I could have seen more of of England since we only got to see Dover, being a Port city,

I've been on this ship and it's wonderful! Great staff, accommodations, food! Loved everything, well almost. I wish there was a space on the promenade deck for chairs or loungers but that's about it. So much better than the Norwegian Escape I was on shortly before. Hope to go on this ship again when the world gets back in shape!

Hi John. I recently saw a few pictures of this ship and it showed a Promenade Deck with chairs on it. After viewing this video and reading your comment, I was confused as to why the pictures I saw showed chairs on that deck. Do you know if they've made any changes to the Promenade deck where there are now chairs? Or possibly I saw older photos? I have never cruised before and I'm very interested in the Holland America line and especially a walkaround Promenade deck that includes areas to sit and relax!

@@Hisbannerislove There is a promenade, but there are only a couple of wooden benches. There are no lounge chairs around the outside, only in the pool area and the back of the ship on multiple levels. I like the deck around the middle of the ship that is usually covered but could have loungers in shadier areas. Norwegian has restaurants and loungers around that deck. I guess the interpretation of what is truly the 'promenade deck' is in question here.

I would really like to experience the original style of a Promenade deck where one can walk all the way around the ship or lounge on a chair and relax and watch the ocean go by or read a book and take in the beautiful sea air. It seems so peaceful and relaxing if you want a quiet area away from the pool loungers for example. I'll have to start really researching to find out which ships still have this appealing feature. Unfortunately many cruise lines seem to be replacing this. 😕

@@Hisbannerislove I agree with your sentiment. We had a wonderful time at the back of the Konigsdam and met a lot of very nice people, but it can get very crowded. Strangely enough, the Norwegian Escape had those quieter areas, but the ship itself was jammed with people to the point of being unpleasant.

Tamarind was my favorite specialty restaurant on the HAL ships that have it. We always book at least two nights there right away. Haven’t been on the Niew Statendam yet but have been on the Niew Amsterdam which is similar. Love the music walk too. HAL is definitely one of my favorite lines.

Thanks for the review, going on it the first week of March. I noticed better excursions as I’ve sailed with HAL before and they had no scuba diving . Now they offer scuba diving at each port. Seems they are starting to welcome younger folks . I love the quietness of HAL and I’m 50’s.

Was just on the Kongingsdam and we were totally disappointed with the food in the market buffet area. All the hot food was cold. Many people complained but nothing was ever done. Breakfast eggs were all watered down. The hamburger place was great as the burgers and fries were hot. The ship itself was beautiful.

I was in cabin 5021, avoid the cabins above the world stage. There is no 4th deck directly above the stage , but the 5th deck is. Horrendous noise from the very loud music. They wouldn’t move me, they said all rooms were occupied.

I just cruised this ship. Fabulous service throughout the ship. Canaletto menu has been redone, and it is far better than on previous (smaller) ships. Well worth the $15, and I expect it to increase as did Pinnacle. Pinnacle was outstanding also.

I like out of Vancouver as gets into the area faster and no stop in a non Alaska port which is included as US regulations mean stopping in a non US port out of Seattle. But of course both options are great but I would choose Vancouver

Just took this for a week to Norway. Nice ship, quiet and restful. Would be pretty nice if they ditched a premium restaurant or two for another lounge. The crows nest was always packed, the premium restaurant Tamarid at the back was always empty. Make that another lounge/game room. Also, the food was terrible. I mean shockingly, incredibly bad. Would do HAL again but will make sure it's another ship w/ a different set of cooks!

Hi - my partner and I are very much considering taking a transatlantic cruise on the Nieuw Statendam this winter, and there is one issue that we can’t seem to get clarity on. During the days, is the screen playing shows/movies, and if so, how loud is the volume? My partner has a noise sensitivity, and appreciates a quiet poolside experience at least during the daytime. The movies at night is not an issue.

HA is our favorite cruise line and Nieuw Statendam is one of our favorite ships. It would be a bit helpful if you narrated your excellent videos at a slower pace. Also, if your image were set off to one side of your video it would give viewers a greater view of the background; sort'a what Rick Steve does with his travel videos.

First time cruisers here. We will be on this beautiful ship in three weeks. We are trying to be light packers and since we are flying into Florida, we will be traveling with just our carry ons and two back packs. I keep reading everywhere that you can take your carry on with you when you board the ship but have to wait for your luggage. Will we have to wait to get our two carry-ons once we are on the ship or can we take them right with us? Are they just calling our backpacks the “carry-ons?” Thanks everyone!

You can do self disembarking if you can carry your own luggage. Usually when they send the disembarking information you go to the guest services and tell them you want to self disembark and they give you a time and card to show at exit. It also means you get off as soon as the ship has been cleared

You will be fine with your carry on bags both for boarding and disembarking. Just hang on to them and do not let the porters take them off you. But a good idea to have luggage tags on everything! Enjoy your trip, the ship looks lovely.

I've been watching a lot of cruise ship videos lately. I noticed that none of the ships seem to have an option for black / African/Caribbean dining. Also haven't seen any Chinese food, which I'm fond of.

There is not any that have permanent Caribbean restaurants that I can think of! Good point. Some have Asian restaurants, like Holland America and on some Princess Ships - but mostly tends to abs served in the Lido Buffet restaurants very often

Yes. It is. Weird as on the same day this ship and also Viking Sun lost engine power. It was pretty terrifying for the Viking ones as ship was adrift in huge waves and for a long time they were evacuating slowly by helicopter

Just finished a ten day Quebec City to Boston on this ship (September 2022). Great food and great staff but opting for the "Have It All Package" of internet, fine dining, excursions and liquor was over promised and under delivered. Internet was useless even if you paid the additional $50 USD upgrade. Excursions booked up too quickly. Fine dining selection was done for you (you didn't get a choice). Open seating in the dining room left you to eat after 9 PM. While the music entertainment at night was excellent, daytime activities were left to your own accord. Cruise director lacked all enthusiasm. This ship is for you if you are looking for a non-excitable time.

It’s pretty well understood that if one person in a cabin purchases a package, then the other person is required to do so. I have never been on a cruise where this was not true. I cannot imagine why you would say it’s insulting. It’s simply an industry standard. I completely disagree. It was my favorite cruise ship. And it’s Half Moon Cay, it’s pronounced “key” but it’s spelled Cay. The decor is not poor, it’s pretty comparable to what I’ve seen. I don’t understand why you seem so determined to be negative about it. I loved the spa. It was clean, well stocked. Personnel very helpful. Towels taken away often. Wonderful steam room. Beautiful heated loungers. We’re going on another cruise and I’m definitely booking the spa. You seem to be attempting to make your opinions “facts”. They aren’t facts. Just opinions, which is fine. The Tamarind is indeed wonderful. Your spelling is atrocious. I deeply appreciate that the Lido serves food. I’ve been on cruises where people cough into the food, sneeze all over it, drop their food into other dishes, thus contaminating the entire bowl. No, thank you. I very much appreciate that the staff dishes it up, and they’ve always been very accommodating about what I want and how much. I have no idea why you would say it’s like a soup kitchen, it’s nothing of the sort. See how I turned my opinions into facts, just like you did? I think you are simply confused about what you like and what others may like.

Choose another ship. This was our least favourite cruise. But if you’re booked, you’ll enjoy the Dutch cafe with the best Belgium beer and Dutch delights as well as superb decor and location. You’ll enjoy half moon Kay. The best beach I have ever been to. The few dance shows are love,y and hang out for the whole show at BbKing, with top talent. Your stateroom has a great design but poor decor. Spa is one of the worst at sea. Gym is good but staff is snobby. Lido is like a soup kitchen where you ask for food. Best resto is Tamerin ..truly best sévices and food. Drink package is the worst and wine selection is poor quality, grocery store quality and very sweet or vinegry. My none drinking spouse was required to purchase a package. This was insulting.

I learned absolutely nothing from this video. Is there a nightclub? Fitness classes? Night parties? What type of weightlifting equipment? Nightlife? Etc, etc
