doddleoddle this video is ild but I just relly want to say this, if you lived forever, you would watch everyone you ever loved,you would watch the end of the world and survive past that, you might live in some alien planet and survive to see a whole new civilisation rise and fall. but I think you would just float in the bleakness of space probably in pain, forever sunce you would live forever.I would rather be just some blob of dead cells unconcious

What you guys were talking about with the "if it didn`t happen we wouldn`t be here to see it" etc is an actual philosophical thing called the anthropic principle. It usually ties in with a multiverse theory like "this universe is too perfect, everything fits too well, it`s either made by something (but then where does that something live and why does it live and who made it) or there`s just so many universes out there with different things happening, that this one had to happen at some point because *everything* happens at some point.
@TheHazelHayes10 жыл бұрын
I think that's what doddleoddle was trying to get at to be honest. But the alcohol was clouding her ability to say those exact words :)
@MrHws5mp10 жыл бұрын
Another thing is that there's no single definition of what "perfect" is, so when somebody says "this universe seems too perfect to be created by random chance", what they'e really saying is "this universe seems too perfect FOR ME to be created by random chance". In other words, they're talking about their relationship to the universe, not making an observation about how the universe really is. However, that person, and all their millions of ancestors, grew up in this universe and adapted and evolved to thrive in it, so it would actually be rather odd if it they and the universe hadn't ended up being pretty well suited to each other. It isn't that the universe is perfectly adapted to humans (so it must have been created by some human-like supernatural entity), it's that humans are perfectly adapted to the universe. The bit of the universe that makes the likelihood of your internet connection going down directly proportional to the length of the comment you're typing on youtube and how far into re-typing it you are could definately use a bit more finessing, mind you....
@realkojitmal10 жыл бұрын
ChewingSand alcohol does have that effect. Oh well, we got the idea. Mostly. :p Harold Smith from what I gathered (I try not to look into the whole anthropic principle thing too much because of existential crises and stuff), scientists tend to go for the "why is everything so perfectly balanced to allow for human life" instead of the "why is human life so perfectly balanced for this universe" which is not something I`d really considered, strangely enough, despite always pointing out that looking for planets with oxygen and water because "those are more likely to have alien life" is a bit weird as life on earth does not even always have those same requirements. But, although I get that it`s a bit of a "give and take" thing, we adapted to the universe, etc, that still does mean that the first conditions had to be perfect to allow for this development in the first place. And it`s still a bit mindboggling to consider that if we`d been a tiny bit closer to the sun or the earth had been a tiny bit bigger or smaller, or the big bang had instead been a mediocre bang, or an asteroid didn`t hit us ages ago to create the moon (or however the moon ended up around here), all of this life probably wouldn`t have happened, just like it didn`t happen (as far as we know) on the other planets in our little solar system. And then it goes on, like "if those two people 50000 years ago hadn`t met, I wouldn`t exist" etc. So yes we adapted to the universe but the universe did provide the perfect circumstances and then kept them coming to allow all this to happen. It`s all so dependent on chance, it`s a bit weird. Although on the other hand I do think it`s pretty arrogant how often these theories consider humans "special" and "important" and "why do *we* exist" and "why are we smart enough to observe it all" when really, we could be the dumbest fucks around here in the emptiest part of the emptiest universe, we just don`t know. It`s probably because we have nothing to compare ourselves to combined with a lot of arrogance, but still. I personally also think it`s a bit scary how only 1 law of physics has to change the tiniest bit to completely eradicate us all. Like "welp I wobbled and now humanity is flung off the Earth into space and everyone dies, sorry". Which is extremely unlikely, I know. STILL. And this is why I`m not supposed to be thinking about this XD The internet on a whole can do with a bit more finessing tbh. Less trolls would be nice.

Charlotte vlogs The thing is, since we don't know enough to say whether we're the only form of intelligent life that's possible in this universe, let alone in any of the infinity of slightly different universes that might have happened, we can't really say how "remarkable" it is that this universe "just happened" to be perfect for intelligent life. For all we know, all the universes next door could be full of methane-breathing, crystaline intelligent life forms that thrive on planets with twice the temperature and half the gravity of Earth who are all WAY smarter than us, and our universe was the exceptional, profoundly UN-lucky one that ended up stuck with squishy hot humans. Even the Earth wasn't always so perfect for us shaved apes. For millions of years it had too much CO2 for us and an entire eco-system based on anerobic bacteria. If air-breathing bacteria that turned the CO2 into oxygen hadn't evolved, who knows what the CO2 breathers might have evolved into? The "invention" of an oxygen-rich atmosphere was a disaster for the anerobes from thir point of view. Then for millions more years, the oxygen levels were high enough to allow giant insects, and then dinosaurs had a pretty good run at it until that pesky asteroid came along. In either of those periods, you'd have said that this universe was "amazingly" well suited to ten-foot bluebottles or huge lizards, not us. Anyway, I need to adapt my kitchen into a place where new forms of life can't evolve, then I need to adapt that bottle of beer to make it lighter and dryer, and then I need to sleep before I cease to qualify as an example of allegedly intelligent life myself, so I'll say goodnight! :-)

The religion segment was great, I loved hearing your views! It's a common misconception that humans exist purely by random chance, once the planet was ripe for life to begin and evolution took hold, natural selection (which isn't random chance) eventually honed a species with the ability to question its own existence. It is certainly is a lot more wonderful than explaining our existence with 'God did it'.
