Running shoes fall apart and break over time. It’s a sad reality. But there are steps you can take to maximise the lifespan of your prized running shoes. In this video, I’ll share 9 top tips to make your running shoes last longer.
Throughout the years, I’ve had many different shoes ranging from trail shoes, to road shoes, and - more recently - cross country shoes. By making a few easy and simple tweaks to your running routine, you can make your shoes last a lot longer and prolong needing to shell out cash for a new pair.
I also explain the three main reasons why running shoes wear out in the first place, and three key signs to watch out for which tell you that it’s the end of your running shoes life.
Have you got any more creative ways to keep your running shoes fresher, for longer? Let me know in the comments.
Thanks very much for watching.

If youre starting a video with a Benjamin Franklin quote you've grabbed our attention! Solid advice Craig. We also tend to buy last year's models at big discounts as we reckon if they were the 'greatest thing ever' last year they'll do for us this year.

Thanks John and Dawn, really appreciate that. Totally agree with you about getting last seasons models. Newer shoes in the current season are very expensive and, unless some revolutionary breakthrough has happened, will do exactly the same as an older model which usually costs half the price.

Excellent tips Craig. For me it's always the upper that seems to go before the sole so I've started using Pairups kits to repair uppers and they work really well. Always satisfying to get as much life out of your running shoes as possible!

Thanks Ben, appreciate that. I've not used Pairups kits before to repair uppers but I will check them out. The upper is usually the biggest problem I have with my shoes, but it does depend on the shoe I think. My Hoka Speedgoats would benefit from something like that, I feel like the upper on those goes quicker than most trail shoes. Cheers for the top tip

@@runningcafe1 Is that the Speedgoat 4 you're running in? Yeh I found the upper started to go on my pair of those too after some particularly wet runs. Can be hard with the amount of bashing they take on the trails 😀

@@timeonfeet Yes mate, it's the Speedgoat 4s I believe. Wide fit. The upper goes in them very easily I find, compared to other trail shoes!

When I first started running in 2020 I bought a pair of cheap "Adidas PureBoost Go". They were awful, but I didn't know any better and managed to get 500 miles out of them before deciding to upgrade to some Hoke Arahi 6's. I got 600 miles out of them before they split along the inside edge (I have wide, weird shaped feet so it happens a lot to my shoes!). I'm currently about 320 miles into my third shoes the Saucony Guide 15s, which are great, though not the most stable things in the world. Long story short, I'm doing decent mileage and manage to make my shoes last fairly well I think - so it is doable! I see a lot of runners buying new shoes for every season, or just because they are "new" or look cool... Never really made sense to me to be honest, running shoes are hella expensive so I'm gonna stick with one pair at a time until they fall apart... But appreciate that may just be me!

I have wide feet too Mike, I know the struggle. It certainly limits your options when it comes to getting a comfortable pair of shoes, I usually end up buying wide fits but some of the 'normal' fitting shoes work for me too. As long as you're able to run comfortably in the shoe and they're not causing you any pain/injuries, then keep using them. Totally agree with you about the whole 'buying new shoes because it's cool' hype. I really don't subscribe to that philosophy. Also, I don't think there's any point in buying the latest, hottest shoe, as they're 9 times out of 10 similiar to the previous model (unless there's some revolutionary addition in the science). I always buy previous seasons shoes, and shop around for a good deal. Shoes can be expensive! Thanks for that, Mike

It's always the outsole lugs that wear down for me. The rest of the shoe seems to last really well.

My outsoles wear down lots too. I used to have problems with the upper having holes in it from harsh weather and not drying them properly, but since I started drying them ASAP after runs they last a lot longer.

Great tips. Thanks, watched til the end. Any tips on when we need to reture a pair of shoes? Often I find the mid-sole isn't as soft or springy after a few hundred km, but it's too early to change them.

Thank you. I go through a few warning signs its time to retire the shoes at 7:24 ish in the video. These include worn & smooth tread, sudden aches and pains during and after a run, and irreparable damage to the shoe. That's what I do myself

Running shoes are still useful after retirement, e.g. to walk to the newsagent or pub in.

100% agree with you and I use also some of mine for leisure after their running life ends. Regardless, I think it's always best to recycle when one decides to 'throw them away.'
