Perhaps one of the most charming recordings ever. This was the first version I heard, and still my favorite.

Bob Dorough is completely delightful......best ever on....."Better than Anything" as well as "Nothing like You" and ,of course, "Baltimore Oriole"...........he sums up my life during my most fantastic days ..........at Kent State with Carl Miller. I love you, Mr. Dorough. Thank you for bringing your fresh and very special sound and lyrics to my heart.

Been a big fan of this man for 4+ decades. One of my fondest memories is him in concert with the quirky Blossom Dearie at Mccabe's Guitar Shop in West L A. He's 90 and still performing. Hear he's coming to San Antonio in October. cant wait to see him again. Working on 'tis Autumn and hope to perform it at a jam session soon, both singing and playing. Cant sing but I'm funny and will try to emulate Bob as best I can

Saw Bob and Dave Frishberg at McCabe's in about '84. Wonderful. I bought this album from Mort Fega, the album's producer, while he was doing an all-night radio show in Phoenix, AZ in about '74. Lost it in the fire.

Dorough is a national -- no, international -- treasure. He has "style" just as Rose Murphy, Jackie Paris, Mose Allison and many others do. It is a style within a GENRE. And among its features are an excruciatingly hip idiosyncracy.

@Rickriquinho I can see how Dorough's singing may fail to appeal to certain listeners but to claim that Dorough has "no style" is just ridiculous. He certainly has a very distinct style. One that I find very appealing. Just one word sung by Mr. Dorough and you instantly know it's him. That is the very definition of style. However, his voice isn't suited for conventional singing like Baker's or Paris' so I can see where some listeners may be turned off.
@mk2ve Жыл бұрын
He had enough style to be recruited by no less than one Miles Davis to be the first vocalist ever used on any of his many albums. Pretty good endorsement of the great Mr. Bob Dorough I'd say.

Long live Bob Dorough. A man who brought the common man's voice to jazz. For those who say he has "no" style...you are exactly the type of Jazz Snobs I despise. Go drink your over-priced wine and pop a few more Xanex...you are tiresomely BORING.

[cont] -- admittedly, not to everyone's taste. But perhaps it's the genre itself that they don't appreciate. If the critical person [below] hadn't invoked the at-least-equally idiosyncratic Paris, I might be tempted to think that it was Dorough's unembarrassed flaunting of a demotic "country" diction [i.e., not "received pronunciation'] that this was about. Still, without succumbing toa knee-jerk relativism, can we at least agree that it's not helpful to import judgmental categories from one genre into the domain of another? That still leaves everyone free to rate genres the way they see fit.

@beeshor1 In art analysis “style” means not just a “distinctive way” but a proper way. Dorough is one of the worse singers of all times. His mannerism is just unacceptable.

This is not singing. He has no style, no voice. It's just ridiculous! Listen to Chet Baker ou Jackie Paris to know what real jazz singing is.
@micahlanboney78303 жыл бұрын
Thankfully there are different styles of singing... the world would be boring indeed if everyone sounded he same way. Dorough's unique voice was fantastic for storytelling, and his phrasing is impeccable. He never phrased a song the same way twice because his delivery was so imaginative.
@mk2ve2 жыл бұрын
@@micahlanboney7830 I agree Micahlan. For those criticizing Bob Dorough's singing as inauthentic and not really being a jazz vocalist, no less than Miles Davis would disagree. Bob was invited and appeared on Miles Davis' album the Sorcerer in 1962. But maybe the youtube critics know more about jazz and jazz vocal talent than Mr.Miles Davis. Jus' sayin'...
