I have to respond to this video because you make this engine sound like it's a time bomb, and that couldn't be far from the truth. This engine was used long before 2016 in commercial truck around the world by Nissan, and it's a Cummins so they decided to use it for a needed heavy half ton truck segment with just a few changes. I'm a retired truck driver so I know a lot about diesel engines. First off the CP4 pump is made by Bosh, and is a good pump IF you put good fuel in your tank AND add lubricity additives like hot shot secret or Stanadyne. For those who are reading this and contemplating buying a diesel truck, don't use it for short trips or daily driver if your doing short runs these engines want to run, that's got to be the worst thing for that engine too. That's whey turbo gets clogged as well as the EGR, and change the antifreeze when due. Change the fuel filters when due (every 10,000 miles). I can go on and on, but every diesel truck from Ram, GM, and Ford had the same issues, or worse, why? Because most people who buy diesels don't know how to maintain them and don't tow or need a diesel at all, get a gas truck if you don't tow a lot and be happy! I also need to note Nissan also extended the warranty on the Turbo and the Turbo actuator for 10 years or 150,000 miles, none of the big three did that.

James - as I mentioned in the video the engine itself is solid, I understand it's been used in numerous commercial vehicles and other applications before 2016 and continues to be used in others today. My point was that the 5.0 Cummins in the Titan XD hasn't proven to be the most reliable combination so far. But I agree that proper maintenance goes a long way and that a majority of people don't understand the nuances of owning a diesel. Our opinion is always that reliability is earned through proper maintenance. Some engines have some inherent flaws, the 5.0 Cummins doesn't, but outside of a flaw it always comes down to maintenance.

Nah these trucks are super underrated. These transmissions are basically the same as the 3500 rams… I’ve towed up to 15k plenty of times and literally tows almost every day👍🏼 I’m tuned and deleted tho. I love these videos of people that don’t own one and are reading the information off a computer! I own a 2017 XD bought it brand new and I have not had any major problems with it! It’s actually one of my favorite trucks I owned. It’s all stock, actually I’m deleting it next week. It has 150k miles on it, I’m a fishing guide and tow a 24’ bay boat everyday, I have a fifth wheel I tow around too, it has plenty of power to tow. The truck is a dog and has incredible lag and dead pedal, the pedal commander is a must in this truck. In my opinion this truck is very underrated. I am a Cummins guy my previous truck was a 2500 ram Cummins. These videos are acting like these trucks are blowing up on the daily. I’ve never really talked to anybody that actually owned one that had major problems with them. I had way more problems with my 6.4 than I’ve had with my XD. I’m excited about the delete, these trucks come alive when deleted. I live in Florida and would drive it to California tomorrow with no worries!

I have a 2016 with around 160k miles. Emissions intact. The only issue i've had has been with the transfer case needing replaced (under warranty). Although it never failed and always worked when i needed it to, it would intermittently cause a 4wd fault code. I run hot shots EDT every tank. It overall has been a great truck!

I bought a 2016 XD Platinum Reserve with the 5.0. I used to like the truck, but I am at the end with it. Been in the shop 4 times. Nox sensors replaced 3 weeks after I bought it. A month later the coolest reserve tank has a float that broke or got stuck and caused a code I don't remember what it is. 2 months later another code that says the DEF system was contaminated. How that happens I have no idea unless someone dumped a foreign substance in there. If that's what it is that's vandalism. NOW I have a code P249E. DEF system again, dealership didn't know how to fix it. They called Nissan to check Def injector, charge batteries and test again. Those are fine but still has the code. Nissan told them to replace the Intake and Outtake box sensors and the SCR catalyst for the cost of just over $10,000. MIND BLOWN!!! When the manufacturer says to just start replacing parts and not sure if it will fix the problem gives a person major concerns about this model. I'd like to say my good friend has the same truck and has had zero issues. I must have got a Monday or Friday truck.

Jake, I own a 16 Titan xd. About a week ago I noticed when parking into my parking lot at work I had the low oil pressure signal come on and I immediately shut off the engine. I had it towed to my local nissan dealership. It was there for about a week, and lefted the only diesel mechanic they had stumped.... until I began to become nervous and sent the service advisor a KZbin video I came across regarding the wiring harness/sensors leading to failure. I really don't know how long they had my engine running that week for trouble shooting the issue. After sending that video to the shop, hours later the mechanic found the issue regarding the oil pressure sensor. I've owned the truck for a year(used), and I feel that since buying the truck it's never ran better? Prior to this fix I felt as if I had turbo issues. The shop came to a conclusion it was a control valve needing replacing, so I did. Also prior to that I had a engine oil leak and replaced both front engine gasket along with the valve cover gasket. I suppose my question is.... is that how fucked up do you think my engine is after letting them run it for a week trying to solve my trucks problem? And since owing the truck... why does it seems as tho it runs better than before regarding the turbos and throttle response? Was this sensor the problem the whole time and it just didn't tell the computer? Idk, I just hope to receive an answer. I take care of my truck as soon as I realize when something isn't right,(can't speak for the previous owners tho). I think the code prior to the oil pressure low was a p226, low end turbo response?

I'm not saying I disagree with you but sounds like you're reading an article to us. The one thing I do know to be incorrect is that you say that Nissan fired all the diesel mechanics and there is no support for the vehicles. This dealership has 2 mechanics for the diesel trucks.

My 60 month warranty expired 5 weeks ago. I’ve waited for a ridiculous amount of time on parts for other issues in the past. How can an auto manufacturer introduce a product here in the USA and in such a short time as in the case of the 5.0 diesel abandoned the obligation without any consequence. I believe that Nissan put the Cummins in the Titan before the other half ton diesels came out. It was marketed as a 5/8 ton truck. The 5.0 Cummins was one of three motors that Cummins teamed up with CARB to develop for lower emissions and higher fuel economy in vehicles. My dad has a Nissan Cummins and loves it. The CP 4.2 is problematic in all situations bc it was designed for the higher lubricity diesel in Europe but has problems with the dryer fuel in the US. Run a lubricant in with the fuel like Amsoil or Hot Shots in every tank and there’s hardly a problem. The 4.2 is the reason why disaster prevention kits exist for the 6.7 PS, why ram went back to the CP3 and GM switched to the Denso system which is designed similar to a CP3.

Hi. Sorry for not been clear enough. EEUU mean U.S where I live. Sulfur content in European diesel is lower than U.S specs. That's maybe a bit pessimistic, there are engines that are inherently more reliable than others. Sure, money can go a long way in making something reliable but one of the biggest things is also maintenance and naturally, how well the engine and all of its additional components were built from the factory. None of them are a "bad" product, otherwise they wouldn't have been put on the market but that doesn't mean that they all are created equal either.

@@8020Media agree and disagree but that the beauty of all of this. As a former owner of every Ford diesel made after the non powerstroke 7.3 I can say without a doubt that the 6.0 and the 6.4 are bad products although it is our corrupt governments fault with all the emissions bottlenecks that kill these motors. I bought a 2008 6.4 government truck at auction that had zero emissions and it was one of the most reliable diesel engines I’ve ever owned. I was being pessimistic earlier I just agree with George Carlin when he questioned how we can put a man on the moon but Cadillac can’t make a bumper stay on…. I just feel it’s all kind of a scam. You can have any diesel engine last a long time. It’s just this one is going to be very expensive to get there. also the class action lawsuit that was launched in march of 2023 against Nissan and Cummins. Reason was the cp4 fuel pump produced metal shavings and after time killed your injection system It average cost was 16,000 US dollars Nissan wouldn’t recap or warranty it other would Cummins. Hence the law suit. Reason was they knew that it was faulty to begin with but still put it in. It needs a fuel that has more lubricants in it than USA diesel. Made for Europe market. This has been proven so you might see a recall at there expense. Nissan and Cummins will definitely loose this one.

Dailying a diesel isn't a problem at all. Tuning and some basic bolt on mods would certainly bring it to life a bit more. Building it for off road is more about suspension and wheel/tire setups but extra power never hurts

Daily driving a modern diesel IS usually an issue for people because the engine does not get enough time to reach operating temperature with the short trips being driven. Especially not good for the aftertreatment systems...

Best mod i did for my nissan titan xd cummins was selling it. They are a ticking time bomb of problems and poor parts support. Buying a whole assembly for 1 part failure is ridiculous. Nissan shot themselves in the foot by not using cummins tuning on the engine and trying to do their own thing. I loved my titan but couldn't deal with their unreliability.
