When Bill Paxton's character said that Captain Smith's experience was working against him, he wasn't saying that he made an odd decision to maintain full speed. He meant that he was a little too sure of himself by not having any major accidents for his whole career prior to Titanic. Maintaining full speed was standard practice in 1912. You only slowed down when you knew you were approaching something or your lookouts made a report to the bridge. This, of course, changed after this disaster.

If you stick with us each episode, you’ll find that the amount of things Armando and I don’t know but still run our mouths about is as myriad as it is depressing. Like PBS, we rely on intelligence donors like you to educate us. 😂 Thanks for commenting! Hope you liked the show.

It is so fun to see that the guys playing poker with Leonardo DiCaprio (when he wins the ticket) are Swedish. I feel like all people from Scandinavia freak out when we hear someone speak Swedish, Danish or Norwegian in a famous Hollywood movie.

Still the greatest movie-going experience of my life, especially when it was re-released in IMAX 3D. Jack chooses death. You can see it in his face. Rose at this point is traumatized. Shes out for the count. But Jack knows what's going to happen if he stays in the water. I think we should ask WHY he chose to die

Good point Armando when I first heard Ruth utter to Rose "New Money" when Molly Brown walked by I was like "Oh so a person who just became rich the wealthy still turns their nose up at them? Well fu$k you too." So wealthy people who have been rich for generations still look down on their own rich social class they figured the new rich people will likely lose their money as soon as they get it so "NAAAH!" And I love how Kathy gave Molly a real ball busting attitude when Cal basically tries to control everything Rose does whereas Rose pushes back with her own I can handle myself & I can speak for myself. It's obvious Rose takes after her father while her mom is the opposite the scene between Rose & her mom Ruth when Rose says she hates how her mom is dropping everything on her to marry rich & how unfair it is. Then Ruth replies quietly says "Of course it's unfair we're women" women back in those days didn't have rights they were considered property, seen but not heard, & baby making machines. Which is disgusting & infuriating not to mention that more of the 1st class passengers survived over the middle & 3rd class passengers like they aren't human & don't have rights even the steam workers were treated like shit.

100% agree with all of that. One lesson history has taught us is that those in power stay in power by finding ways of dehumanizing everyone that is not exactly like them. New money, blue collar, women and minorities will never be accepted by that crowd. Same reason most NFL owners don’t want a black GM/HC.

Speaking of that you guys should review the Planet of the Apes movies there you see different species & colors of apes working as a team whereas humans can't even do that. Too damn busy fighting & blaming everything else for all that shit that went down.

For all this movie gets right about it's history, there is a lot that is exaggerated, if not just pure made up garbage. The biggest example is Bruce Ismay's role in the speed of the ship - long story short, he had nothing to do with it. He didn't put pressure on the crew to speed up. This lie comes from a smear campaign that the American press launched at Ismay, as he had fallen out with William Randolph Hearst a few years earlier. The only "evidence" that he demanded to speed the ship up was a half-remembered conversation from a 1st class passenger, Miss Elizabeth Lines, who overheard Ismay saying "The engines are working very well, we'll beat Olympic and arrive on Tuesday night." This is literally just an observation that the ship was already ahead of schedule and faster than her sister ship Olympic had been in the past. There's also plenty of evidence to suggest that Ismay didn't even want the ship to arrive ahead of schedule, as he would detail in letters he wrote the previous year about Olympic's crossing time. During the sinking, Bruce Ismay worked with the ship's officers to help evacuate as many people as he could from the ship. He was told by 1st officer William Murdoch to leave the ship on the last lifeboat to be lowered from the area in which he was standing, 20 minuets before the ship sank. He was under the impression that most, if not all, of the women and children had left the ship. Furthermore, Ismay was chairman of the company. There was going to be an inquiry, and he had to be alive to answer some important questions. As a man in 1912, you were expected to die with honour and nobility, so naturally the accusations of cowardice came flooding in. Ismay's story is a long and complex one, and he definitely does not disserve the reputation afforded to him by the press, and perpetuated by movies like this, as the slimy coward who caused the ship to sink. I highly suggest you watch Oceanliner Designs' video on the man, it's a thoroughly researched and engagingly explained look at how Ismay's reputation was ruined for saving his own life: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4C4aKarptt1ibs

I always thought Cal would’ve been a more interesting character if he was an ordinary looking, nice, boring guy who was loaded. But instead they made him too easy to hate, so it would be easy for the audience to be okay with Rose running off with Jack.

@@KisstheReviews 🤔 I am sure there are quite a few character actors that IDK who could do the job well. Maybe he could be borderline homely looking like Paul Giamatti. Or maybe more subtle like Michael Stuhlbarg. Someone the audience would understand that Rose wouldn’t want to marry, yet be a sympathetic character. I wish I had a more extensive catalog of character actors in mind to better come up with someone.

Rose & Jack were merely plot devices to see the ship. That’s why Rose stayed on the ship: to give the audience more time to see it & for Rose the Narrator to be on board when it sank. But the fictional part of the story suffered for it.
