Horror/comedies. The juxtaposition of something super scary with the brief release from comedy. Movies like Happy Death Day or Ready or Not use comedy to relieve tension before the horror elements build it back up again

100% psychological horror/romcom, because its RAW, in games/shows like last of us part 2 [ik it is only in game rn but my point stands] evolving from part 1 where the villain is the cordyceps to the real evil being no something or somone but instead the drive of pure unfiltered human beliefs. Some would say its humans but id have to disagree. As, its such a watered down analogy of whats really going on. In the game you see all sides no one thinks they are wrong they are simply doing what they BELIVE in and it makes u question can a person be bad for having the drive to fight for what THEY think is right whether its right or not ultimately is not important, what makes somone bad, doing nothing while what you believe is important be torn to shreds or somone who does something and stands up when they see something wrong. which is such a message atleast thats the message I got. Which absolutly shattered the way I saw people's actions which is what a good piece of media does [atleast to me] and i dont see how a purely comedy or romcom or horror media could portray such a message that is just so potent.

I can’t see how the choice was to compare Titanic to this movie. I did enjoy the movie, but I do understand your point about how the break up was not on screen, but it was his absence that caused them to break up. They didn’t have a big fight. He just wasn’t there, so it would be interesting to hear how they could have dramatized that. I think the real catch of the movie was the betrayal by people in the business. That’s what kept me watching.

The main point is that Titanic is a 4 quadrant movie meaning it has broad appeal. Fall Guy is also trying to be a 4 quadrant movie by having a mystery, romance, action, and drama, but where 1 succeeded the other failed.

The Fall Guy’s biggest problem is that it’s a tourism advertisement for Australia. Australia gives a lot of tax breaks to film there, but the caveat is that the movies have to make Sydney look as shiny and clean as possible. Even though they film in real locations, they are scrubbed and cleaned before filming to make every scene look like a commercial. Every accident looks intentional. All mise en scene is destroyed because nothing looks natural in the scene. It’s a problem with every movie made in Australia under this tourism tax break scene. It’s the same reason Baz Luhrmann’s Australia, Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, and more recently movies like Aquaman, they all have this same clean tourism style problem. The reason movies like The Matrix work so well is because the fake clean look of this Australian filming style helps sell the idea of a fake world created by machines.

It's a really interesting analysis, but I feel that saying Fall Guy wasn't successful because the story could be told better is a little bit naive. A lot of really well-written movies flop, and some poorly-written ones become hits.

It is the same with youtube. People would love well made videos, but the most sensational ones always rise to the top. Overall people want to be entertained by some dumb fun they can not get in real life.

That's fair. I didn't get into this but I think a big part was that because this movie didn't know what it wanted to didn't didn't sell itself well. Like the trailers all left me going, "but what is this movie actually about???" And so I feel like a lot of people went "I can't tell if this movie is for me or not?"

@@TheWritersBlockOfficial That's definitely true. I remember when it came out, and I decided not to watch it in the cinema because I dismissed it as a generic action movie. But actually, after watching your video, I found out some interesting stuff about it, enough to encourage me to check for myself whether it works or not. The marketing of the film didn't get me there at all. And I'm not an average moviegoer; I look at what movies come out every week and choose one or two to try. So they lost quite a significant part of the audience because they didn't know how to present the movie.

@KatyaOrlova-jp1gy same thing happened to the new animated transformers movie. It was advertised as very childish but the target audience is much more like nostalgiac fans. So the word of mouth was great but so many people didn't go see it. Especially cause the marketing made it compete with movies like wild robot which is a much better pick for bringing kids to

I went to see Fall Guy purely because it was from the same creator of Bullet Train, which I had seen in theaters and loved, and while I have seen Fall Guy a few times, I think you’re right that Bullet Train is the superior movie. It was much easier to follow, the twists were fun and felt earned, and the fights/stunts made sense. Also I really appreciated how you compared Titanic to Fall Guy, because while I wouldn’t have made those connections, I really enjoyed how you put them together.

A) I think Bullet Trains lack of self referential aspects really made it have more of its own identity. Even if it's heavily borrowing from a lot of other movies/directors, moments like the Channing Tatum Cameo or Brad Pitt's overall performance make it iconic in its own right. B)I'm glad you like the comparison! I tend to take the whole premise of "apples to oranges" as a personal challenge.

This might sound weird, but I think Emily Blunts parasocial relationship with fans works against her. A lot of couples who are famous for being a couple and actively make it a part of their brand, Emily/John, Ryan/Blake, Will/Jada, make it hard to suspend disbelief in romantic films. They also make it harder to sell a film. For example, another Krasinski project came out, The Quiet Place prequel, and everyone was all over Lupita and Joseph making flirty edits of the two, despite them both being in a relationship with other people. Hell Sydney and Glenn's social media and interviews SOLD Anyone But You to make it one of the biggest films of the year despite them both being engaged to other people at the time. The only edit i saw about this film was about how Emily and Ryan had "Sibling Energy." It is easier to project on Ryan because we don't know very much about him r his relationship, but its harder for me to invest in a movie couple if they are 1/2 of a power couple.

I felt this disconect too. I watched it with my family and we all had mixed reaction. My dad loved it (but the stunts and the humor were right up his alley so I can see what got him hooked), my mom just went "meh" and I actively disliked it, but I couldn't put my finger on why. I liked the actors, I liked the shots, it was pretty decently produced... and even if it checked all of those boxes... I didn't like it, specially the relationship stuff! And your vid just helped me realize why!

I think a lot of movies (and books too) struggle with the "will they won't they" dynamic. You have to be a really talented writer to make the tension believable while also making us believe that they SHOULD be together. Otherwise it feels like "OBVIOUSLY you should be together so stop wasting our time" or "Actually you SHOULDN"T be together, so stop wasting our time."

The movie was sort of a mess. I watched this on a date once it was streaming. I didn't feel the chemistry was good. Bland, no heat. the action pieces were fine but they were pointless and seemed like after thoughts to the plot. It's like they bought the rights to the fall guy show and just winged it on set. the film makers thought they were smarter than they were. My partner hated it more than me. This was a poorly constructed movie to showcase Ryan Gosling that failed. I agree Titanic had all the same elements but that elevated everyone involved and hit the marks. Nice work on the video

I liked the movie, but I can understand why it didn't connect for audiences, for me I think the movie had a lot of potential, I just think it fell flat by the twist and the ending which I do like how it pays homage to the original, but it wasn't a great ending. I also saw a comment where someone said the movie doesn't have big stakes, and I agree, I think if the movie had a different story with stakes, who knows the movie would have been a little better. I really wanted this movie to be amazing especially since it's the same director who did Bullet Train, which is an ultimate favorite of mine, but I think Bullet Train succeeded where Fall Guy failed is because it just had a better story, higher stakes, and just great funny characters (not to say that Fall Guy characters were bad, but some were not great)

I think the modest success of Twisters is a great example of this. It really knew exactly what audience it was targeting and delivered for them. Whereas The Fall Guy's version of "something for everyone" really just meant their was no focused identity for the film

PEOPLE in Hollywood absolutely know how to make a good film, but the system makes it difficult for those films to get made. Hollywood wants to make "safe bets" but also those bets cost so much money that they can never be considered truly safe. Even "sure things" like The MCU and sequels to billion dollar movies are flopping now. No one is OWED an audience or people's money, and word-of-mouth is more important than ever.
