@DardanellesBy108 2 жыл бұрын
Good point. I just Googled this and for clarification the organization that would become the US Coast Guard was created in 1790. It was primarily a Revenue Cutter Service. In 1915 that organization became the US Coast Guard. So if that other ship was really out there (which I doubt) they were worried about the Revenue Service and not the Coast Guard since as you correctly stated, the US Coast Guard didn’t exist yet.

The 10 stages of a titanic historian 1. Fan of titanic 2. Wanting to know more 3. Learning from videos 4.Wanting to study more 5. Watching more informative videos like from Historic Travels 6. Growing boredom and watching other videos on ships 7. Resurgence and reading more and more about titanic 8. Watching this video proving that not all historical KZbinrs are true 9. Study some of the remains of the titanic in museums or on the sea floor 10. Have an intense knowledge on titanic and her inner workings to her destruction with some help from Histroic travels

I was about 5 or 6 when the Titanic was discovered in 1985, and even then it wouldn't be until 1987 that Ballard's "Discovery of..." book and TV documentary were available to detail the discovery publically - trust me, I was hooked to these as a kid, rereading the book and wearing my dad's VHS documentary recording down to static from repeat viewing. In those days there was no internet to speak of, certainly no KZbin. We mostly had Walter Lord's book and the 1958 "A Night to Remember" film as our main sources of interest. No big-screen 1997 movie. Very few accurate scale models to stick on the shelf. The discovery launched the first hype-train. After 1987 came a growth of books and TV documentaries, and with them the plausible theories and ridiculous conspiracy theories about the sinking. To learn more we had to read books, find credible sources, research in libraries. Bear in mind here that the 1980 "Raise the Titanic" film was a huge flop - without the discovery there was no hype. It took Ballard to create the interest we have today. If the Titanic still remained undiscovered to this day, I doubt we'd have the 1997 movie, and less than half the Titanic content-makers on the internet that we do. Consider that in the 1958 sinking and 1980 raising films the ship went down whole, even they ignored any witness suggestions that it broke apart. It's a painful truth that all these channels owe their entire existence to Ballard for fuelling their interest and Cameron's ability to bring the legend to life again. Without Ballard we wouldn't know anything about the sinking beyond what the offical 1912 enquiry wanted us to believe, it'd all still be theories and conjecture but with far less of a following. A missing ship isn't nearly as interesting as the true Titanic stories we've uncovered since 1985. Now, I'm not saying the internet is a bad thing, but unlike books which are expensive to research and publish, so therefore eliminate all but your most desperate theorists, the majority are written by scholars and contain more valid details. The internet is easy to abuse by people pushing conspiracies, misinformaion or jusr plain dumbed-down nonsense like these Bright Side plonkers seem to publish. There's a reason why Universities don't allow KZbin or Wikipedia as sources. An internet-education is not a true education. If you are relying on third- or fourth-hand information because it's "convenient" to watch a few 10 minute videos for free than buy and read 500-page books, you are not a "historian" you are an "enthusiast" at best. It's like the difference between being able to strum a few power-chords on a guitar and actually knowing how to play. The internet was around in 1997/98, albeit quite limited compared to now, but when Cameron released his blockbuster movie, I expect that's when the second hype-train began and lesser iterations of that hype continue to this day since little else "big" has really happened in the "Titanicsphere" other than a few minor TV drama shows, "walk through" games and such. I'm all for people being interested in the Titanic and other ships - Ballard's discovery of Titanic also led me to his discovery of the Bismark and an equally great story of tragedy that opens up an interest in WW2 and all that involves, but again 1989/90 were not the "internet education" era, but required books and documentaries. The problem with the internet is you have the good, the bad and the ugly. Unpublished enthusiasts, mostly, trying to out-do each other with nit-picking and name-calling rather than just focusing on gettig it right, like historians do when they write a book based on source material rather than paraphrasing other internet sources. Sadly, your average Millenials and Gen-Zs are lazy. They don't have the patience to read a lot of books, or sit through hours of documentaries. They'd rather watch a semi-accurate movie and be influenced by KZbin hype. But it doesn't make them historians, just enthusiasts. And most of them are pretentious muppets who think they are suddenly "experts" when they're put in a few hours of watching versus those of us who grew up in a "no internet era" and learned the tried and tested way, that Universities still enforce if you want a degree. Being able to cite sources, authors and book titles and/or name original documents is a vast contrast to naming some KZbinr channels as your sole education. An KZbin-education, Wikipedia-education, TikTok-education is not "education". These places are fine if you want to supplement really studying something as they can provide ways of exposing you to new sources and ideas left out of books and documentaries, and movies especially. But yeah, your average "Titanic historian" in your list gets to about 5 or 6 on your list then stops. But also tries to pass themselves off as someone competent enough to have done all 10 things. And that's the message here - your average "historian" wants the "TL;DR" version of events from KZbin. They may learn the general story, but beyond that they don't know the deeper details. Enjoy these channels, but don't limit yourself to internet-research or make then your primary source or information. These are masses of books out there worth reading.

Hey Sam! My name is Christina and I just want to say I love your KZbin channel! I stumbled upon it back in November and I have been hooked ever since. I am in the Navy myself and I drive ships. This episode got me going down a rabbit hole and I made it my mission to see if Titanic did anything wrong in using white shells instead of red. Or if the intervals in which they launched the distress signals were incorrect. The short answer is Titanic did everything right. At that time the rules clearly stated: “Rockets or shells, throwing stars of any colour or description, fired one at a time, at short intervals.” Today the rules state: “Rockets or shells, throwing red stars fired one at a time at short intervals;” The only distress signal that has a 1 minute interval requirement is if you are firing a gun. I also want to add that since the Captain and crew of the SS Californian thought the shells they were seeing were company signals instead of distress signals, one of the changes the SOLAS convention of 1914 made the following change: “The use of private signals which are liable to be confused with the international distress signals is prohibited on every ship.”

The only thing I have to add to this is that this is not the first time I'd heard that they had the wrong colored rockets, but you clearly showed that wasn't true with the wreckage. With regards to the idea that they didn't see the wireless room for its use as an effective means of messaging for distress, well that's only partially true. Its core function to my understanding was to provide a mail service to the passengers, using it as a distress beacon was an afterthought. Many ships at the time didn't have this technology at all, which was also why they chose to transmit CQD as a maintenance signal as SOS didn't exist as a concept yet. Any crew in their right mind however in a desperate situation I would expect to try all avenues to contact someone for help, including getting on the wireless. Generally, no, that wasn't what it was intended for on installation, but what really annoys me about some of these conspiracy theories is that they always ALWAYS present it as if the officers and crew of the Titanic (or any other ship for that matter) Were totally and utterly incompetent.
@DevilSurvivor69

26:33 THERES NO WAY ANYONE COULD’VE SAVED ALL THE PASSENGERS! Bright Side perpetuating even more myth. A rescue at sea takes a lot of time, even now, but especially then, requiring human-rowed lifeboats (no wind that night). By the time either the Californian or the Samson could’ve picked through the ice field, there was simply no time to carry out that massive rescue ferrying over 2,000 people between ships. Ships which were much much smaller and carrying cargo. (I don’t even believe the seal-hunting ship was there. The Californian definitely saw the Titanic, but special light refraction in the atmospheric conditions that night made it seem closer than it was.) Further, the Titanic would eventually be listing too badly to launch lifeboats. And it would’ve been too dangerous to pull the Californian right up alongside the Titanic to speed things up. The Andrea Doria rescue in 1956 took like 11 hours ferrying between multiple ships, for example. In the situation the Titanic and Californian were in, there was simply no time for a full-scale rescue. Yes, they maybe could’ve saved some additional lives, and any additional life saved would’ve been precious, but saving *everyone* was never possible. Stanley Lord was a poor leader who ran a dysfunctional workplace thanks to his intimidating attitude, making all his subordinates hesitant to voice their concerns, and doubtful of their own judgement. They all walked on eggshells. But that doesn’t mean he was to blame for the ~1500 lives lost in the Titanic disaster. He was demonized then and is still being demonized now, by videos like Bright Side’s. Blame for the disaster is divided among all different people whose decisions lead to a freak accident in circumstances nobody could foresee.

I live at the very bottom of South Jersey, on an island, off the coast. Tom has reviewed some of the shipwrecks, that exist in our area. Three in our county, alone.

His computer fan was GOING during this! Also, edit, I have a huge side rant. I once saw a school project poster about the Titanic, and none of the pictures on it were even of the titanic. And it wasn't even something like, "It's actually the Olympic" it was actually other ships, like a colorized photo of the SS United States! HOW DO YOU GET IT THAT WRONG????? Also, I'm a sort of artist and draw ships in my spare time, and the amount of times people ask, "Is that the Titanic" on a drawing that looks remotely CLOSE to the titanic is absurd. Anyways, rant done. Good day!

I too am an artist, and the fact that people will mistake any ship for the _Titanic_ is infuriating. If the ship has four funnels, it’s at least understandable, but I guess that these people have forgotten how to count to four, because they have even mistaken a research vessel for the _Titanic._

@@cooldude815doesthings14 It has gotten so bad that I started charging 10¢ every time someone does this. Naturally, some people think that being told not to call my ships the _Titanic_ means to say the word _"Titanic"_ several times over just for the sake of it, in which case it’s 20¢ for each one, which builds up quickly. If I'm not payed back by the end of the month, those fines are instead imposed on the first illustration I sell the next month. This serves both as a lesson in not jumping to conclusions as well as a way to tell what type of person they are. A group this month made that mistake thrice and wouldn’t pay me back. I told them what that would result in, to which one of them said that he didn’t care. Mind you, 30¢ is almost 10% of an illustration under normal circumstances as it is, but as you can see, the fact that they didn’t care says a lot about the type of people they are.

The International type of distress were either a cannon or rockets that made a loud bang and a shower of sparks, they were also suppose to be fired at one minute intervals. Here is The 1912 International Rules of the Road governing Signals of Distress are quite clear: Article 31: Class 1, called for - a cannon or explosive device [with report] fired at one minute intervals. The device’s report was the sound of distress. Article 31: Class 3, covered the sight of distress which is a rocket of any color fired one at a time at short intervals.

I absolutly love how often you say 'I've never heard that' (instead of dismissing something outright) or 'I don't know.' or 'let me check this.' - it is so comforting that there are still people on the internet who do not confuse 'I think ...' with 'I know!' - And it makes it more trustworthy, if you DO speak from conviction.

@Historic Travels Hey Sam, at the time of the Titanic's sinking, radio, or wireless, was not viewed by ship captains as a primary means of communication. Case in point, on the morning of the sinking, the Carpathia and Californian are within visual sight of each other and are communicating with the traditional signal flags. There is a picture of the Californian taken from the Carpathia and the Californian is displaying a series of flags, and the first one is "Answer." It's known that both ships were equipped with wireless but the captains chose to communicate via flags. That changed shortly after the sinking.

Honestly talking about how some captains didn't understand the value of the technology. I recently saw another documentary where it wasn't just radio communication but the Marconi system in general that they were wary about. The documentary said at the time the Marconi system was still pretty new to them and they didn't put much faith in it at first or something along those lines

In regards to the radio technology: It is my opinion that the old school captains would have understood the value of wireless machine. Furthermore, Captain Lord, without doubt, would have had knowledge of water mirages, he would have most likely come across it a few times within his career. If not, he would have surely heard stories about its effects.

About captains not trusting wireless, I don't know about Transatlantic shipping but I've read about Great Lakes captains resistance to wireless in the early days. The general consensus among those captains seemed to be that it was just another way for the company to peek over their shoulder more than any mistrust of the technology. At any rate it's not a good look to assume Lord just didn't trust it when we really can't know for certain.

Don't quote me on this, but I think they addressed the rockets in A Night to Remember when they have the people on the Californian trying to figure out what's going on.
